1947 Stainless Flattie Oakland, TN **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, stainless/jewels • TAGS: .

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

“This is a very rare WWII 1947 Willys. I put jeep in the title for locating purposes only. IT IS NOT A JEEP MANUFACTURED VEHICLE. It is a 1947 WWII willys, with original engine and drivetrain. The body was hand built by skilled craftsmen in 1974 in the philippine islands. It has a complete stainless steel body. The engine was rebuilt about 3-4 years ago by an ASE certified mechanic. It runs and drives like new and has no problems that I am aware of. It has been used mostly in shrine parades and ridding the grandchildren around on the farm. It has been stored in a climate controlled shop most of its life. It naturally has no rust anywhere on it. The tires are very old and do have signs of dry rot, but have excellent tread and if not going on a long trip, should be fine for several more years. I have heard that several were built in the 70’s, but I wouldn’t think that very many are still around. The vehicle comes with a full enclosure and as far as I can tell all the snaps and attachments are in good working order. The vehicle has never been wrecked or disassembled whatsoever. The miles showing on the speedometer are true and correct. There are no dents that I have seen at all. There are some very lite wear scratches in the stainless body from getting in and out or wiping dust off without the proper cloth. Again these are very lite and would probably not be noticed, but I did want to mention them.”

From Long Haul Truck to Hot Rod

• CATEGORIES: Features, Jeep Rods

So, you have an extra $100,000 and 3000 hours.  What do you with yourself?  Randy Grubb decided he’d build a Hot Rod out of a long haul truck.  Popular Science magazine highlights Randy’s efforts.  Though it has nothing to do with jeeps, I thought it was worth mentioning.

What I really liked was the before and after pics.  In the before pic, you can see how he arranged the parts so he could visualize what he was building.  Any of us who have done projects like this where there aren’t specific instructions/directions can relate.  I can’t tell you how many times I put on and took off the jeep body to make sure it fit in the right spot, not too far forward, not too far back, not to high, was it straight — then stand back and ponder and take a few pics and adjust and ponder …. details, details, details.  It’s all part of the fun :-).

Despite it’s fun design,  this wasn’t just some show vehicle.  When Randy was finished, he drag raced it at 100 mph.  Now that’s a HOT Rod!

I’ve included the before pic (taken by Randy’s wife).  You can see the after pic result and read all about the transformation at Popsci.com.

1948 CJ-2A West Jordan, Ut $4200

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , , , , .

Brett spotted this interesting find.  There are at least 3 unusual features on this CJ.  The most obvious one is the paint job; unclear what the inspiration was, but it’s unusual.  The second feature is the automatic transmission that has a column shift rather than a floorshift, which is a clever mod.  Finally, while I have seen expanded windshields, I can not remember seeing an expanded windshield that uses a CJ-2A frame (with the exception of the one below this post — strange how these things surface sometimes).

Engine Update and the Invention of the PCV Valve

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

I made some more progress with the engine today.  I managed to get the oil to finally stop exiting the dipstick hole.  The cause was, as I suspected, related to the crankcase pressure. So, I spent some time fiddling with the PVC and breather system.

First, I bought a new PCV valve.  Next, I connected the valve cover ‘breathers’ together with the intake breather and fed them into the aircleaner.  Now that the pressure is a bit more equalized, the oil stopped getting pushed out the dip stick hole.

So one problem down, but now a new one.  The air getting cycled into the air cleaner was ‘dirty’ enough that it was affecting performance a bit.  However, I’m hoping once I get the new jets for the carb,  it will stop burning so rich, which will clean up the system.  That’s the theory anyway.

While I was researching breathing systems, I learned a bit of history about the PCV Valve. It turns out that PCV valves were invented during WWII to enable tanks to ford deep water and still have their systems breath appropriately.  Following the war, someone at the GM plant where the PCV Valves were built realized they could help combat some smog issues. You can learn more about this at Wikipedia.
