Builds: The Cheap Jeep & Its Ghost Town Adventures

• CATEGORIES: Builds, videos, Website

cheap_jeep2While it’s not a jeep in form, it certainly captures the spirit of a jeep in function. Two alternators, three batteries, and a host of features make this an unusual vehicle.  The most recent cheap jeep was launched in 1974 for the purpose of desert and mountain travel, not unlike the way original mountain bikers back in 1976 utilized old tough schwinn bikes to tackle the mountains.  It’s singular purpose –the next ghost town or bust — was a cheap, but dependable vehicle capable of on road and off road travel for thousands of miles over the period of a week.  This vehicle is still used and images and video from 2009 can be found on the website along with links to all the places these intrepid adventurers have visited over the past years (scroll to the bottom of the homepage). View the video below to learn a little bit about the unusual features of this vehicle (or go to their video page).

cheapjeepSteve Ricketts writes on the website In 1974, I acquired a 1966 Pontiac convertible from another customer.   This time the price was $75.00.   Like the Chrysler Imperial, the Pontiac needed a lot of work.   After extensive engine repair and a transmission rebuild and modification, it was able to be driven to my house where the first Cheap Jeep (Chrysler Imperial) was stored.  The transformation from old cheap jeep to new cheap jeep began.   The finished product is what you see today.

cheap_jeep4It is highly modified, and works better for our purposes than anything we could buy today.   It is easy to repair on the road, and parts are readily available.  It carries more than “regular” jeeps and is a lot cheaper to replace should it become necessary to abandon.   I would really hate to take a $30,000+,  four wheel drive (Blazer/Bronco, etc.) on one of these trips.   At the very least, the paint and body would be badly damaged.   It would also be next to impossible to repair in the field, and a very real possibility exists that I would someday have to abandon it.   After all these years of use and modification, I still have less than $800.00 invested in the Cheap Jeep…and that includes the original purchase price.

1950s CJ-3A? Sherwood, Or $900

This thing actually runs.  It sounds like this might be a good deal.  Plus, the seller needs to sell it quickly!!

“Unfortunatly, I have run into some finacial issues and am not able to do what I would like with this Jeep. I pulled it out of a barn on one of our farms after it had sat for probably 20 years; Replaced the fuel lines, put in new plugs, and flushed the tank FIRED RIGHT UP! It has the original engine in it not sure what exactly it is and i believe the axles are dana 44’s? The tires all hold air and has newer black wall wheels. There is no title for it willing to write a bill of sale but it is being sold as an “Off road Vehicle”. It does not have any seats and needs a new steering wheel as well as a battery but have one that I can throw in there to show you how well it runs. The Brakes will need a service aswell. The 4 wheel drive works very well and all gears work aswell. I am looking to get rid of this ASAP! So all offers are open for discussion. Please call or email me with any other questions that I can answer! (971)226-9489”

StoneTire – Offroad Tires

• CATEGORIES: Tires and Rims

UPDATE: The website’s online purchases and inventory is offline.  It appears they are gearing up to allow users to use Major Credit Cards rather than just paypal.  Though Stone Tire calls the tires Ugly Dog, I suspect these tires are the same ones made for the Import/Export Tire Company by Comptred and called V-Grips. It appears Import/Export also sells the other two tires as well and other offroad retreads.

UPDATE (06/07/09):  I sent the company an email, asking if they could potentially make a desert dog for racing and sending them some examples.  I heard nothing back from my June 7th email.

Here’s a company out of Tennessee called StoneTire that calls itself the top resource for retread and offroad tires on the web.  Here’s three of the offroad tires they sell.

The CJ-3B Page Interviews Jim & shows off his past 3Bs

• CATEGORIES: Features, News

Jim’s become a good friend.  He is full of stories, jeeps and life (and apparently cooks some mean brisket, too).  Derek Redmond gave him a call the other day and asked him to do a story for the CJ-3B Page.  It’s a great story and a nice synopsis of a good niche he’s carved for himself.  You might also remember that Jim builds seat covers that have been selling very well — buyers around the world are enjoying the covers.  Congrats Jim!  Below is one of his before and after projects (go here to see more pics of this):

Last Ride: Gerald’s Great Idea

Gerald sent some really sad pics to me with an idea … let’s create a “Last Ride” category. We’ve all seen one or more of these jeeps:  Something so rusty, so damaged, so modified, so mortifying that the grass is holding it up.

So, I’ll put up two posts tonight (courtesy of Gerald).  If you have some pics, see some pics, or save some pics, send them my direction and we’ll add them to.

Gerald writes, We bought this about 10 years ago and finally decided to pull it from the weeds.  We needed the rear axle.  The frame collapsed as I stood in the rotten drivers compartment to steer the wheels while being pulled by the tractor.  It was truely it’s last ride.  We will pick it over and save some stuff. Check out the shackle lift.
