1946 VEC CJ-2A New Jersey $1000

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: .

Here’s an early CJ-2A with the column shift. The seller doesn’t not indicate whether it runs or not, but it looks whole — it looks like it might run.  Obviously, the hood and windshield are a bit rough.

“For sale is a 1946 Willys with early column shift.”

1954 CJ-3B Tacoma, Wa $6500

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B

UPDATE: This was for sale for the same price in July, but the jeep was brown (as you can see in the pic on the right). Now the jeep is gray as seen in the left.

Given that the body is a fiberglass, which is very hard to find for CJ-3Bs (actually impossible is a better word), I'm positive this was produced in the 80s or early 90s.  Looks to be in great shape.

"This 1954 3-B Highhood powered by a Chev 383 stroker V-8 and 4-Speed transmission.  warn 12,000 lb winch.  36×14.50×16.5 swampers. dana 44 front axle. dana 18 transfercase.  Fiberglass Body …."

1950 M-38 Bonnie, Ill eBay

• CATEGORIES: M-38 • TAGS: .

Probably the worst feature on this 18,000 mile M-38 is the paint job — the painting over of gauge rims always detracts from the quality.  The driver side springs look a little fatigued as well.  Otherwise, it looks to be a good restoration candidate.  The seller does not mention the jeep specifically in the ad (a little odd) — instead, the seller describes a little history of the M-38.

“The M38 Jeep was the first post-WW II jeep, based on the civilian model CJ-3A, but upgraded for military use. It was known by Willys as the model MC. It featured flat fenders, a one-piece windshield, bottom-mounted wipers, a fuel filler on the left side near the driver’s seat, protruding headlights, and an air vent at the bottom center of the windshield frame. The 80-inch wheelbase M38 weighed 2,750 pounds.”

1953 CJ-3B **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B

(SEE COMMENTS)  It appears a great deal of meticulous work has gone into this ‘restoration’ and it looks nice.  However, this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me.  If you are trying to make jeep that’s just come off the battlefield of WWII and you are going to invest the time and energy, why not do this with an earlier model such as an MB (that really did come off the battlefield) or it’s closest cousin the CJ-2A?

“98K original miles, 6 volt, all stock and original, new engine (it purrs) with maybe 5K on it, rebuilt transmission, rebuilt brakes, fresh upholstery on the original seats, a few dents and dings. Its turn key, needs nothing, starts, runs and drives excellent for a near 60 year old Jeep. Built to look like it just rolled off the battlefield in WWII, extended bed, Flat military green paint, loaded with ammo boxes, vintage tools, military surplus stuff, canvas etc.”

My Rebuild — The Windshield

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

The first time I tried to fit the windshield onto the body last year, it was too narrow to fit correctly.  At that point, I put it aside to deal with later.

Well, yesterday I decided that now was 'later'.   After playing around with the windshield some, I realized a couple things:  1) Someone had welded a crack on the driver's side leg, so I had to grind that down a bit to help it fit; 2) The cowl of the fiberglass body was not shaped quite right, so I would have to 'trim' some of the rubber gasket to get the window to fit (the rubber needs replacing anyway, so I hacked it for test purposes — as can be seen in the closeup photo below); 3) Even with the rubber hacked, the windshield likely won't fit as tight as I'd like, but I can live without a tight seal as I doubt I'd be driving in much rain anyway.

With those decisions/concessions made, I had to choose where to drill the holes for the windshield mounts.  The key for me was to get the right tilt to the windshield angle, making sure the horizontal part of the legs looked pretty level and making sure that when the windshield was tipped forward that it would rest level (something that I couldn't do after mounting the windshield to my first jeep).  Finally, I had to make sure the windshield was back on the cowl far enough so that the windshield frame binders could be mounted to work correctly (I'm calling them binders here, but what do you call the two devices that pull down and secure the windshield?).

Another task I tackled today was the brake pedal.  I took a brake pedal assembly out of a junk yard '90 cherokee.  Originally, I had the pedals all set up for a clutch and brake pedal.  After getting that setup complete, I changed my mind to go with an automatic. With that decision, I chose to get a wider automatic brake pedal.  Fortunately, the cherokee's also came with automatics (and hence automatic brake pedals) and they used the same brake/clutch assembly system, so all I had to get was a brake pedal and resize it.  So, if I do decide to switch to a stick/clutch, changing out the brake pedals and adding the hydraulic clutch mechanism (which I already have) will be a snap.

1953 CJ-3B Newport, Wa **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $1750.   I think this is a good deal.

This ad caught my interest because I’d never heard of Newport, Washington.  Newport is located north of Spokane and west of Sand Point, Idaho.  Looks like a beautiful place.

The jeep is interesting too.  The drive train has been modernized and the jeep outfitted with a modern cage. The engine probably has some extra spunk for a v-6, but bored 60 over suggests that it might not have a ton of life left.

“1953, Complete running gear out of 1968 Jeepster Commando, 3:73 gears, model 27 up front has a 44 in the back, model 18 transfer case, turbo 400 with shift kit, 225 V6 punched over 40 headers and turbo mufflers, aluminum high rise with 4 barrel carb, saginaw power steering, 2 inch lift kit, we have a few spare parts that go with it. Hasn’t been started in three or for years. missing coil and ballast resister. Has a nice full cage. Front and rear seats out of CJ-7”

Reader’s Builds — Brian’s new bumper for his CJ-3B

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features

Brian's been busy creating a new bumper for his CJ-3B build. He's says it's nothing fancy, but I think it's pretty nice.  Here's a start-to-finish explanation of the work it took to make his bumper.  Thanks for sharing Brian!

"Because the springs are longer than stock, I had to come up with a way to lengthen the frame a little in the rear. So, I fabricated  a new rear bumper and incorporated a swing out spare tire mount.  In addition, rather than cut holes into the body, I decided to put the tail lights in the bumper. To make the bumper, I only need to use a grinder, drill press, and a Mig welder — it's nothing fancy."

Four Wheeler Magazine Flashbacks

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, Magazine, News • TAGS: .

Recently, Four Wheeler Magazine flashed back to 1978 and 1968 issues.  The 1978 issue had a back cover advertising Desert Dog Tires, including the tires that had Xs on them (I had forgotten about them).

Four Wheeler also has a short retrospective about tires, including an advertisement that shows the wide variety of tires available.

The 1968 issue had an article that underscores how popular jeeping had become.  One event in California, the Desert Safari, organized by the Tierra Del Sol 4wd club, brought in 600 jeeps and over 2500 people.   Below is the cover story’s picture.

1950 CJ-3A Cypress, Ca eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ-3A

This jeep appears fully equipped for trail running.  Interesting reversal of spring pads — the back shocks sit inside the springs rather than the outside. I assume this has to do with the expanding shackles on the back.  The seller lists this a CJ-2A, but the last CJ-2A produced was in 1949.

"This is a 1950 Willy's Jeep Rock Crawler with the following offroad modifications: Front Rock Crawler Bumper with Tow Bar and Clevis Rings, storage boxRockcrawler rear bumper with spare tire swing out carrier and gas can carrier Buick 231 motor, oversize "burma"radiator, hoses, new valve cover gaskets, headers, straightpipes, new/rebuilt 4 barrel carburator, high volume adjustable oil pump, new distributor, cap rotor, plugs, competition cam, new alternator, water pump, and thermostat. New twin electric fans controlled from cab(one kicks on at 195 degrees). My Build — Radiator and Tranny Cooler Install

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

While building my last jeep, I remember the difficulty of making the radiator fit.  I believe I finally used a pinto radiator I had laying around and, fortunately, had a hood that allowed the radiator to sit just barely above the grille. With that experience in mind, I've been puzzling through how I wanted to deal with the radiator for a while.

This weekend I finally got to installing my radiator and tranny cooler.  Selecting a radiator was the first challenge.  I had planned to use the radiator from the CJ-5 I bought last year, but I couldn't make it fit (I ended up selling that radiator).  Then I found a brand new $15 chev radiator that was pretty small off of craigslist.  I purchased that radiator, but it turned out that wouldn't fit either.  Finally, I broke down and purchased a 15" high and 26" wide Griffin Aluminum radiator from Doug Herbert (it was about $30 cheaper than Summit).  That was the shortest radiator they sold and it fit perfect … well, almost perfectly as I had to cut into my cross member to make a little more room.

This is one of the most rusted flat fenders I think I've ever seen.  Next, I noticed the rear PTO water pump, which was cool.  Then I noticed the solid back — no tailgate, yet the body doesn't look like a MB/GPW.  It's hard for me to believe that this jeep rusted so much while in storage.
