My Build — Wiring Harness

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

Hurray!  My wiring harness arrived today, taking only 3 days to get here.  I pulled the harness out of the package and checked out the wiring.  It looks like the wiring is heavy duty enough for my needs.  The lengths appear reasonable and everything looks organized.

Painting update:  I just got an email that my paint has finally shipped.  I suspect that, unless it arrives by saturday, I’ll be delaying the painting I hoped to do this weekend.  I’ve got the hood, fenders and grille ready for paint.  The body is about 90% ready.  Everything should be ready by tomorrow.

You can learn more about this harness here

My Build — Oil Pump Changes

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit

How to structure the Oil Pump in a buick v6 can be a bit of challenge if you read various web pages.  Should you use a high volume oil pump or not (the high volume oil pump is simply larger gears and a spacer to accommodate those gears)?  On the 225 v6 the general answer seems to be ‘no’ unless you drill out the oil holes for the middle two main bearing holes (these are smaller than the outer ones according to what I’ve read).

The 1980 and 1981 3.8L v6 engines that I have both came with the high volume pumps.  After doing research, I couldn’t get a clear answer on how good these pumps were for these later model engines.  So, I turned to TA Performance to see if I could get an answer.  They said using the high volume pump was fine, but recommended I use a variable pressure controller (in the pic above, you can see the old spring and nut sitting in front of the new double-nut & spring that’s already installed) and a hardened steel plate that sits underneath the gears to reduce wear (seen in the pic to the right).

I installed everything, but discovered that the gears are too tight, so they don’t spin properly (you can test this by taking out the distributor, sticking a screwdriver into the oil pump drive gear, and turning).  Therefore, I’m ordering a set of shims from TA Performance to fix the problem.

1950 CJ-3A **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: News

This is a fiberglass CJ-3A, with both the tub and front clip fiberglass.  I’d say the body needs to be mounted a little better.  This seller will be selling a variety of jeeps, as he stumbled upon a person who had a field of them.

“I recently stumbled onto a backyard with many, many Willys Jeeps in it. Right in the middle of everything was a fantastic WWII GPW. In order to get it, the owner said I had to buy every Jeep he had. So, look for 3-4 more inexpensive “project Jeeps” from me in the very near future after I kill the hornets, steam clean them, throw away all the trash etc. This is a 1950 Willys CJ3A with a full fiberglass body. I’ve seen many fiberglass tubs etc, but this is the full deal, tub, hood, fenders and even the grill. The only metal is the frame and the windshield frame, both of which are in excellent shape. According to the owner, this rig was running and driving a little over 2 years ago when it was parked but I have no way to verify.”

1946 VEC CJ-2A Kansas City, Mo eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , .

If you are looking for an early CJ-2A, this has got some good elements, including the driver’s side cutouts, the column shifter, and a heater.  The passenger side fuel hole is interesting; I don’t believe that was stock?

“This early CJ-2A has an ID number of 16741.  It is a 3 speed on the tree.  It has a clear MO title. Below is the description: Motor – Org. 4 cylinder.  Just got back from machine shop.  All four cylinders were re-sleeved.  Crank was polished.  New pistons, valves, springs, etc  Everything still in boxes as you can see by the pictures. Interior – I have no seats. Does have a roll bar.  Floor is solid, except for the “bed”. It should be cut out and fitted with new metal.   Exterior – The only rust I can see is the passage side step. Some of the Hat Channel underneath will need to be cut (maybe 3 feet)  Tailgate is orginal, but is pretty rough.  I have no windshield and I don’t believe the hood is org. because there is no Willys stamped on it.”

If jeeps were meant to fly, they’d have wings.  What are these guys thinking?  Can you imagine the stuff they did as kids? Note that someone at least had the sense to tell the passenger NOT to hold onto the outside of the roll bar.

Puzzled about Brake Line Sizes

• CATEGORIES: Features, News

Once again, I’ve been searching the internet.  The newest quest for information involves brake line sizes.  Specifically, as I posted a few days ago, I pulled brakes lines and a combo valve from a late 80s Cherokee.

One of the things I didn’t realize initially was that the front brakes lines are 3/16″ while the rear line is 1/4″.  The question I had was, does that matter?  After some searching, I landed on the Hotrodders site where readers discussed this issue.  The nut of the discussion was that this should not be an issue and, in fact, has been done on many newer vehicles….

Wiring Harnesses — EZ2Wire

• CATEGORIES: Biscuit, How To

When I built my last jeep, I removed the wiring from a totaled Chevy Vega.  Using schematics I copied at a library, I was able to sort out the wires and hook everything together.  This time, I don’t have a wrecked Vega in the driveway.  Moreover, I didn’t want to spend the time at the junkyard pulling one out of a wrecked vehicle.  So, I made the decision to purchase a kit.

My first thought was to use a Painless Wiring Kit, but they seemed to be few and far between on Craigslist.  So, I figured that I’d have to buy a new wiring kit.  When I looked at the price of a new Painless Kit, I thought the price was a little high, so I turned to ebay to see what was available.

Certifiablejeep.com

• CATEGORIES: Features, Website

While doing some research on brakelines, I came across certifiablejeep.com, a website that appears to mostly follow CJ-5s and CJ-7s.   There’s some good information on the website.

“This site is dedicated to all that is Jeep. Mostly CJ’s are depicted and discussed on this site, but it isn’t limited to just CJ’s. We have been live now for for a little over 3 years and in that time we have met and talked with many people. The site has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception. It is still geared towards those who want to enjoy the Jeep lifestyle and gain and share knowledge about Jeeps.”
