1965 CJ-5 Black Mountain, NC $1200

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is a project.  It looks like the body has been patched together.

“I have a Kaiser-Willys 1965 CJ5 that is a project that is almost road worthy. Come have a look and make me an offer. $1200 OBO.

Has a running 4 cyl overhead “Hurricane” F-134 motor, T-90 3speed transmission, and Dana 18 transfer case.
The axles are a Dana 44 rear axle and Dana 27 front axle with original Warn lockers.
The jeep has a NEW clutch and NEW transmission (Has been installed –See Picture)
It has a NEW brake master cyclinder however the condition of brakes is unknown because the brake line is disconnected.
Original seats, but they are rough… I added padding and wrapped them with duct tape, intending to put a seat cover over them. They are usable but might want to have reupholsered.
The Original steel jeep rims are 16 inch, 5 x5.5 bolt pattern. Rims have been sandblasted, primed and painted gloss white
The Windshield in good shape with electric wiper motors instead of vacuum wipers. This was pulled from a ’72 jeep cause the orginal was rusted out.
The Floor boards in the process of being replaced, Rocker panels are also being replaced.
The Frame is in good shape having no rust through. Frame has been sandblasted and painted.
INcluded is a raggedy old soft top and soft doors, keeps the weather out, but nothing special to look at.
The Jeep has side mounted spare tire carrrier with full sized spare.
Tires are old and have cracks in them but hold air fine. I would replace them to go on the road.
NEW components include: starter solenoid, wires, spark plugs and fuel filter.
There is a stock heater and an after market 2nd heater is installed… dont know if they work.

This is great vintage jeep. Fix the brakes, tires and tail lights and you canbe on the road. It will be a fun little around town, parkway cuiser or trail jeep. Most of the major stuff has been done…. does need finishing to be drivable.  I have an open NC title in hand.

1963 Austin Champ Scottsdale, AZ **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Other 4x4s, Unusual • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

(03/03/2011) This is the nicest Champ I’ve ever seen.

“UP4AUCTION hosted by Discover Classic Cars is very pleased to offer you this 1963 AUSTIN CHAMP JEEP! This a rather rare vehicle, these were the civilian versions of the British combat vehicles. This has 12,130 ACTUAL miles and will definitely cause heads to turn wherever you show up in it. This is not a daily driver and is not built for highway driving. Normal speed is roughly 30mph and its maximum speed is 60mph at 3,700rpm.  This Champ will also ford to a depth of 1 foot 6 inches.

The temperature gauge is in-op presently, Red main indicator light is burned out and the hand brake is in need of an adjustment.

Finished in Maroon with Blue fenders, the exterior of this Austin shows well. There are a few blemishes in the paint, please view the photographs below or call us for additional details. The White vinyl removable soft top and doors are in very good condition. The Maroon vinyl seats are in good condition, there is minor wear present and a tear on the inside of the passenger seat.  The carpeting also shows minor wear just so you’re aware. Please view all of the photographs below or call us for details….”

A Jeep Wagoneer + a Ferrari = Jerrari • Top Speed: 140mph

• CATEGORIES: Features, Museums This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The National Automobile Museum (the Harrah Collection) in Reno, Nevada, opened in 1989.  Most of the collection is based on Bill Harrah’s (gaming pioneer and avid collector) automobile collection.  Following Bill’s death in 1978, the Holiday Corporation bought Harrah’s Hotels/Casinos and more, including the collection.  Then Holiday announced they were going to sell the cars.  This ticked off Nevadans, so the governor stepped in and helped negotiate a donation of the cars by Holiday to a special non profit organization established for the purposes of a museum.

The museum was named among the top ten museums by Car Collector magazine, has been ranked as one of the best 16 car museums in the world by Autoweek, and has been selected the best Museum in Northern Nevada in Nevada Magazines’ Annual Readers Poll.

The collection appears to have only two jeeps.  One is a slightly modded CJ-5; the other is a Wagoneer that was outfitted with a Ferrari engine and called a Jerrari.

Here is the Jerrari as photographed by RenoDesertFox from Flickr.  Note the color of the first image is the correct color and the remaining images have had the colors tweaked by the photographer, but still show a good deal of detail.

The Plane called a Jeep by the USAAF

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Admittedly, I know very little about planes.  So, maybe I’m the only person who didn’t know that there was a plane that’s called a Jeep?   It is the Curtiss AT-9 ‘Jeep’ plane.  I discovered it while looking through some old photos at the McCarthur Museum in Arkansas (which I’ll feature in a couple days).

Here’s the photo I initially found. (see the last sentence in the caption).  When I first saw the photo, I looked around to see where the jeep was sitting, but the little plane was blocking my view.  Then it finally dawned on me that the little plane was the jeep.

Here’s a more recent photo from Wikipedia.

I wish we had some better photos of these.  These three photos were shot in 1949 by  J.R. Eyerman in Shanghai, China (click on the pics to see the Eyerman credit) for Life Magazine.  Interestingly, on this page the credit for the third photo is also, or mistakenly, given to Jack Birns.  Also, according to this page, the third photo captures the last tug to leave Shanghai, with credit to Jack as well. According to the folks at G503, these jeeps were used by the shore patrol “to pick up mostly drunks in and was easy to wash out the puke.”

“1952 Overland M38 A1 Jeep.  Moving soon and don’t have the time to restore this properly. Frame is in *excellent* condition, no rust. Needs some bodywork on rear panel and left-front fender, otherwise ready for primer-paint. Mostly complete though missing random parts like seat cushions, generator, gauges, and other little odds/ends. Transmission and transfer case recently rebuilt (can’t verify though they shift fine and oil was clean). Engine rebuilt though I don’t know how much mileage or when. Cyl head needs new valves and guides since they rusted from sitting in damp environment. If you have questions please ask, email for quickest response.  $1500 firm. You won’t find one in better condition.”
