1942 Slat Grille (no jockey box) MB Goffstown, NH **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3900

(10/21/2010) Here’s an early Slattie.

“This is  a 1942 Willys Slat Grill MB. Its a project I bought years ago and has been sitting in collection mode ever since. Meaning I have been accumulating the parts to restore her. I decided I wasn’t likely to get to this project or my #277 45 CJ so I’m letting them go. The 45 is gone so here goes the Slatty. I’m selling it just as I bought it with the exception of it now has the original slat grill on it as when I bought it someone had put a stamped MB grill on it. Guess they thought it looked better. The serial number of the slat is 112200 and the body tag and frame tag both match. The 3 tags are still on the dash but one has a small piece cut out of it for some unknown reason. The engine SN is MB219002 which I believe is a later motor. I’ve never tried to start it, but the motor turns freely. The transmission is original with the right hand fill and I believe the transfer case is original as well. The transmission and transfer case are stuck in gear as it sat outside for many years before I bought it. I’ve never tried to free them up or look at them. The drive shafts are disconnected so you can move it. I believe the spare tire carrier is correct. It has the “gas” gage and the 30 amp meter. The key switch is still there with the key. The windshield frame is rock solid. The hood has a round hole cut in it. It does have the riveted “slat grill” oil pan. The frame is good. It has one of the 2 hinge tool box lids in place with the lock. The drivers seat is the original split back rail but the pan has been opened up for the larger filler. Take a look at the pictures and if you have any questions just ask. If it doesn’t sell I’m going to spend a few hours on it and see if I can get it running and driving….”

Museum: Gilmore Car Museum & The “Checker” BRC-40

• CATEGORIES: Features, Museums This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The Gilmore Car Museum in Kalamazoo, Mi, “includes eight historic barns, a re-created 1930s service station, a small town train station, and nearly three miles of paved roads.”  This complex houses a large and diverse collection of automobiles and automobile memorabilia in a truly unique setting.

One of the vehicles housed at the Gilmore is one of three BRC-40s assembled (or built or rumored to have been built) by the Checker Automotive Company.  I’ve looked into the various bits of information about the Checkers and there seems to be no better summary of the status of these unusual BRC Prototypes than what Bill Spears, who has written extensive about Bantams and early Jeeps, wrote in a Hemmings Blog Comment about the Checker:

The Checker ‘episode’ is still one of the great mysteries of the jeep story and I cannot figure out for the life of me why…. In Kalamazoo it is widely assumed that the Checker was built there from Bantam plans. Karl Pobst’s notes indicate that he did indeed send Checker the blue prints in three installments (and I would REALLY like to get my hands on those and I suspect they are still at Checker) but, my information is that three jeeps, two of them four wheel steering, were sent to Checker from Butler and they arrived in boxes as for shipping overseas. There is nothing at all to indicate in the Checker I had that it differed in anyway from a regular Bantam BRC. All the parts cast with Bantam numbers etc. However all the jeeps were completely disassembled for reverse engineering as it were to try to cost out the job. The parts were all put in a pile, then the cars were reassembled without regard for which parts went were. Thus, my car had a 4 wheel steer column, but it was two steer. One was sent to the Army and wrecked in testing. The car at the Gilmore still belongs to the Stout family I believe. Jim Stout, who knew what he was doing restored the car, but in a way tried to disguise it, and it sat in the Checker lobby for years as a Kalamazoo built car. I think Stout made an interesting contribution in making it possible to turn OFF the 4 wheel steering feature, but, the 4 steers were never really produced. If anyone has any information or leads I would sure appreciate hearing about it.

I found some good images of the “Checker” at the Gilmore museum from remarkablecars.com:

Bill Spears has an extensive discussion about Checker and Bantam with images:

UPDATE: Was $2300. **SOLD**

(02/05/2010) This has got a great sounding drive train. There’s still some work left on this rig.

“I have a 1946 CJ2A that orginally came from CA. It has been on the Rubicon, down to Pismo Beach and many CA jeep runs. It has competed at Weiser in the Sand Drags and Hill Climbs and in the Mud Boggs in the Boise Pavillon, years ago. I purchased this jeep in 1987. Rebuilt the motor in the 90’s. Has only about 100 miles since the rebuilt. This is what the purchase includes:  1946 CJ2A body, all lights and hardware removed and body sand blasted, no rust, small amount of bondo, but body straight, fiberglass hood, winshield intacted no cracks.  1964 Ford 289, rebuilt, Cobra Intake, Cobra Valve Covers, Cobra Oil Pump, bronco air filter,  4 speed, Warn Overdrive, Posi 4:56 gears, dual shocks at each wheel, small lift, but very stiff suspension, custom dash with Stewart Warner gages (5).  Bucket Seats, back seat with storage box, roll cage, battery mounted in rear tub, spare tire carrier with CB antenna mount, and spare. Old 11×15 on 15 inch rims Armstrong Tru Tracs, Set of Dick Cepek 14.50x 15 Sand Paddles on 15 inch rims (old).  This jeep isn’t perfect:, brakes should be replaced, final sanding and paint, all hardware and lights reinstalled, and the radiator has a small pin hole leak. If you are looking for a jeep to drive in the hills, sand. or rocks this is the jeep. If you are looking for something to drive on the street look at something else.”

Many readers will remember last May’s explosive expose on the Wally Cohn custom ‘jeep’ built in Germany.  Ok, so maybe it wasn’t an explosion heard round the world, but there were a few of us who were interested.

Well, along those lines I found a MB/GPW at Hemmings which had been modified with fenders that brought the Wally Jeep to mind.  Here are some pics from the Hemmings Post.
