The Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles in Lexington, Ne

• CATEGORIES: Museums This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles is located at 606 Heartland Road in Lexington, Nebraska (just off I-80).  What this means is that I drove right by it, 15 years ago, and didn’t know it was there; However, at the time, we were traveling with 3 vehicles, in-laws, a 6 week old baby boy, 2 cats, and a everything we owned.  The trip was a 3 day move from the moraines of Madison, Wisconsin, to the mountains of  SLC, Utah.

Given all the factors and distractions, I suppose it wasn’t the best time to stop at a museum.  However, we did stop when the rear tire blew out on the motorhome I was driving somewhere in the middle of Nebraska.  Now, I didn’t know this was the rear tire when the explosion rocked the motorhome at 65 mph.  No, I was pretty sure a crack opened in the middle of the highway and the devil himself had grabbed a hold of the rear axle, attempting to pull us all to the depths of Hades.  It wasn’t until I slowed (perhaps screeched) to a stop that I came to my senses (an started breathing again) and realized that it was only a tire.  My next step was to clean up my pants.

Importantly, it wasn’t just a tire that blew, because something was opened by the blast ….  a hole in the wheel well.  Though we didn’t realize the hole was there, the cats did.  So, in the middle of the night, after a long day of driving, with everyone asleep, those dumb Wisconsin farm cats (Dodger and Tucker) snuck outside (by opening one of the kitchen cabinet doors near the floor and then sneaking out the hole in the wheel well).  At about 2 am, one of our cats (Dodger) started crying outside the motorhome waking us all up.  It took all my effort not to strangle Dodger; the other cat, Tucker, didn’t reappear until we were packed up and ready to abandon him.  By then we were actually happy to see him.

Yes, that was not a good time to visit what appears to be a fine Museum, with over 100 military vehicles of all kinds.  So, just a tip, leave the cats and all your stuff at home.  Here are some pics of what you’ll see.

From Dieselpowermag.com is this cool image which includes a MB SlatGrille and a M-38A1:

I can’t remember where I found this image … oops.

From the Unwanted Blog, come these images of a M-38A1, a Schwimmwagen, and a Kubelwagen:

1945 VEC CJ-2A Ishpeming, Mi $450

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  Price dropped to $450

(05/21/2009) It appears this body sports an early CJ-2A body with a VIN number of 11891 (though the seller believes it to be a 1947 body).  At the very least, it’s got the driver side cutouts to validate the VIN number.  It’s hard to tell what else is original.

“This jeep was a project vehicle for our prop building studio. It was intended to be used in parades, promotional pictures, and promotional videos as a Cobra runabout. We got this far, before we just didn’t have the spare cash or time to pour into it any longer.  Serial Number appears to be 11891. The plate is still in place on the dash, but is pretty weathered, so the last digit may be off. You can judge for yourself, as I have added a pic of the Serial # plate…..”

Rare doesn’t adequately describe this unusual find.  This sure looks like a MT Tug rear based on what I can see in Mark Askew’s Rare WW2 Jeep Book.  I’m not sure what category to put this in, other than unusual!

“For sale 1943 Willys Truck 3/4 Ton 6×6 chassis Model MT-TUG. Only 15 of these vehicles were built for the US Army in 1943. I have the rear half of one of these vehicles which has the tandem rear drive axles, frame, suspension, front axles and a modified transfer case.”

This has an unusual rig on the back. Lotso rust here.

“Dont know many details about it. Its rusty, but ran back in the spring of this year. Has original 4 cy. 3 spd running gear with stock axles. Has lots of rust. Would most likely run again if you rebuilt the carburetor and filed down the points and put a battery in it. Has Super Swamper Bogger Tires-30 x 12.50 x 15 with lots of tread left. Tires are too wide on the rims and you cannot cut the Jeep very far either way. $350.00 cash gets it all.”

This CJ-2A looks good.  The seller reports this has a knock; it might be worth checking the harmonic balancer to see if that’s causing the problem.

1947 CJ-2A Aptos, CA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $4700

(07/13/2010) Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) once said that the coldest winter he ever experienced was a summer in San Francisco.  Well, I lived in Aptos (just south of Santa Cruz, Cali) for several years and I’d argue it’s summers were every bit as cold or colder than SF when that damn fog rolled in, which seemed to be every evening!  Fortunately, I only had to drive to the next town (1 mile away) and the fog would disappear …

Anyway, here’s a nice looking CJ-2A that lived somewhere close to where I was (aptos is a pretty tiny town).

“1947 Willy’s jeep original everything, under 8k miles been garaged most of it’s life and really wants to go 4 wheeling. no rust, no dents engine still looks shiny and new. If you have wanted a Willy’s this is your chance to start with the original right down to the military style tires! everything works great, runs great just needs a home with less vehicles so it can be driven. Paid 8k for this awesome truck back a few years ago it has been driven twice since then. I just don’t have the time and too many cars.  So come give this little red jeep a good home I would like to get 6000. but will consider all offers. I can hear her crying in the garage wanting to go out to the wide open trails, someone come help her out.”

Little Bo Peep Has Lost Her Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE 3 (10/23/2012) : I discovered another recording of this song by someone other than Spike Jones:

UPDATE 2: WillysJeep has a nice images of the musics and lyrics cover that includes a rough version of a BRC-60.

UPDATE:  Dave reminded me that it was the 45s and not the 78s that needed the center gizmo.

Tom’s wife found a 1942 recording called Little Bo Peep Has Lost Her Jeep a few years ago in a stack of ’78s at a garage sale.

What’s a ’78 you ask? It seems I don’t remember them as well as I thought.  What I remember about ’45s was the little plastic gizmo you had to place in the middle of them so they would play on a phonograph.  Here’s a bit of history about the ’78 from wikipedia (for better or worse, the US was once again bucking the world trend).

In America in 1900, the two leading manufacturers of flat records were Columbia, which used 80 rpm as its speed, and Victor, which used 76 rpm. Since one company’s records were playable on the other’s machines, it is only logical that the eventual standard speed would be in the middle.

By 1925, the speed of the record became standardised at a nominal value of 78 rpm. However, the standard was to differ between America and the rest of the world. The actual 78 speed in America was 78.26 rpm, being the speed of 3600 rpm synchronous motor (run from 60 Hz supply) reduced by 46:1 gearing. Throughout the rest of the world, 77.92 rpm was adopted being the speed of a 3000 rpm synchronous motor powered by a 50 Hz supply and reduced by 38.5:1 gearing. (wikipedia)

So, now you know!  Tom (or his wife?) converted the record into a MP3 which you can down load here. You can also read the lyrics they transcribed below.
