Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. One day a while back I got an email from a new reader named Jan. She spotted a CJ-5 sitting in a field for $500 and had a question about the VIN# and the model. We solved the VIN question and then I learned more about how Jan acquired this Jeep.
Jan wrote, “I really didn’t buy it, just offered to get it off his farm. He had a sign on it for $500.00 or best offer. All my friends are laughing at me and indicating it’s the uglist thing they ever saw…… but I fell in love with it!”
After bartering for the Jeep, Jan managed to sell the plow locally, which meant she was actually up a few hundred dollars. However, the body was so bad she knew she had to replace it, so she located a fiberglass tub for cheap in Indiana. She has also found a local mechanic that verified the frame was in good condition and the engine should restore easily. So, hopefully, next spring Jan will be driving around in a “free” jeep. Congrats Jan!

“For sale is a great project, It is a 1953 Jeep Willys Flat Fender CJ3B that is in great condition. It is a project that I started but lost interest. It has a Chevy 327, and a T18 Tranny with Dana 20 Transfer. Tranny and Transfer are not installed, but all parts are there. It has been sanded down and primed in OD Green. Here’s a slatgrille that could stand to be dropped down. The body and grille appear in good condition. This might be salvageable.

“Don’t laugh. This is a great parts Jeep. Frame;vin plate/Maryland title in my name; both axles; 4 rims; windshield frame & wiper motors/mirror arm; rear hitch; side mounted gas can holder; transmission/transfer case/bellhousing with all shift levers; grille with headlight buckets and trim chrome rings; steering wheel with complete column; frt seat frames (feet need some minor work); rear driveshaft; shocks w/special washers; various body panels could be used as replacement parts; footman loops; and etc.
The body panel laying in the back does-not go with this Jeep. I figured up over $2000 in parts, if parted out. I’m just tired of moving it from place to place. Its time someone else enjoyed it or used it for parts. BE PREPARED TO TRAILER IT HOME!”
This appears pretty stock. I don’t know much about the electric Braden Winch.
“This M38 has quite a storied past. It is a great Jeep in excellent restorable condition. Other than two small spots behind the passenger seat, it’s rust free. Even the tool box is sound. The Jeep runs. It has a period correct Braden electric winch. The Jeep was delivered March/52, I don’t don’t know when the winch showed up, but it’s been there a while. This is a good sound Jeep, unusual for around here. It’s best to give me a call and lets talk about it. Mechanically it will need a complete going through, but the body work is going to be minimal since there’s no patch panels of any kind needed. Jeep is located in Columbus, MS I will not separate the winch from the Jeep. 85zero – 59six – 300four”

Here’s an interesting build. I think the way they handled the grille lights and coloring works pretty well. The side door angles work well also I think.

“Up for auction is 1946 Willy’s CJ2A #64464. Many years in previous family and believed to be originally purchased in California. Barn storage or desert life much of vehicle’s existence and what little rust around steps came from outside storge last few years not far from southern California beach.
I purchased this 2A as a project to do with my son as I soon planned to start work on my original one owner California ’48 CJ2A(red one in couple of pictures) and was not far from my house. I believe it to have most of it’s original Harvest Tan paint in tact and to be 95% rust free. This 2a underwent a very well done 283 Chevy V8 engine swap in the 60’s that included 11″ brake upgrade and GM steering. The fire wall has been moved rearward 4″ with nice metalwork. Sold with bill of sale. Vehicle does not have windshield, seats or engine. Have seen some restored and complete rolling chassis on ebay as late so maybe a great restorable body can be of help to someone.”
There might be some good parts here. I’m pretty confident it isn’t a CJ-3B.
