This looks like it would make a great restoration project.

“Here is great deal on a classic Jeep. I hate to sell it, It was a project for my son and I but I just got laid off and need to sell it. The Jeep runs great. New coil, fuel pump, spark plugs, clutch, brakes. Muffler, overhauled engine and the clutch was put in 2 years ago and about 500 miles since then. Only used it to get icecream with the kids. Planned complete restoration but other things have happened. Been converted to 12 volt. Its great driver now. The odometer says 4500 but its alot more!. Tons of extra parts!. Look at the pictures and see. Extra clutch that was sent to me by accident, new electrical harness, fuel tank, starter, gasket set, Front seat cushions, engine parts, manuals, parts catalogs electric wipes, new carb, a almost new set of tires. Military tires on their now which are in great condition. The top is in good condition, Not installed. The frame is in EXCELLENT condition. Very solid. Body is solid too with minor surface rust. Needs a few things. The foot starter button needs a new mounting flange but is still woking. Turn signals and gas gauge not working. Starting the Auction off at $2500.00 If you buy it now at $5,500.00   I’ll throw in a 36″ Sheet metal shear, 24″ Diacro hand break, A diacro turret punch and the hypotherm plasma cutter. All that you can see in the other Auction Im putting up in a few hours. Everything you need to do a complete frame up restoration. Must be picked up.

****** I got several questions regarding if there is “rot” and about rust. I was a metal fabricator for 14 years and a certified license aircraft mechanic. There is slight surface rust not metal rot. The back seat is faded and starting to rot but the metal pans are solid. I included 2 new pictures of the dash and floor.”

(07/15/2010) This looks solid.  I wonder if that really is a BW OD or a Warn OD.

“Original M38. New seats(front buckets and rear military style quick removable “clam shell style bench), tires, brakes. Runs great! starts right up and goes anywhere. Borg-warner O/D so it’ll cruise 60mph if you dare. It’s not a perfect museum piece yet, but high KBB is $17.5k for one like that.”

1959 FC-170 Costa Mesa, CA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: FC150-FC170-M677 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was on eBay.

(08/21/2010) “Here is one of the rarest Jeeps out of my collection, and by far the most original un-restored complete Jeep, a 1959 FC170 with the 9 foot bed option.  Original paint, never been repainted.  Paint has great patina and shows age of the Jeep.  Two owners, complete and fully documented ownership history, including the original dealership bill of sale.  I went through this Jeep and made everything work.  Original engine needed spark plugs and a tune up and a new generator.  I found an original era correct generator.  Everything on the Jeep is original, the interior is complete, seat upholstery is original, the running gear is refurbished and works as it should, including the engine, the 3 speed manual, the transfer-case, 4 wheel drive, axles, diffs, all in good running condition.  I cleaned and re-sealed the tank and rebuild the sending unit.  This Jeep drives real nice, and everything works, the heater, all the electrical, the turn signals, lights.  Complete with original headliner, original door panels, original sun visors, and a few rare items like a vinyl cigarette box holder attached to the visor. The stencil “Jeep” and “4 Wheel Drive” insignias on the tailgate are original. The tires are original old stock, most likely the second set, dating early 60’s. A true survivor, this Jeep spent 90% of her life in one family, who owned a RV business in a small town in Washington State. The Jeep was mostly used to plow occasional snow on the RV lot, otherwise the Jeep parked in the dry.  The body is completely stock and original, no accidents, no rust with the exception of pitting and surface rust on rear fender flares and surface rust on the bed floor.  Because it is so original I never had plans to repaint or frame-off restore this Jeep, I always loved the original condition it is in. I just made everything work properly, with the goal to avoid any modern upgrades or parts replacements that are not era correct.  This Jeep drives real nice, it breaks properly, shifts nicely and the engine sounds very healthy.  This FC170 is a true survivor.  Your chance to own a piece of Jeep history. The Black/Yellow California plates are not original, they are new personalized DMV issue and I painted them to the correct colors. The license plate does read “59FC170″ and is included in this sale. I added the vintage ’59 Texas truck plates for looks, this Jeep was never registered in Texas.  Original West Coast Jeep all her life!  The rare Texas plates are also part of the sale. The snow plow mechanism works, but I do not have the plow blade.  This Jeep, like all my other Jeeps listed for sale on Ebay, has valid and current California Registration, new tags good through 2011.  The title is clear and in my name.  I have collected Jeeps for many years, and I am selling a number of rare Jeeps out of my collection.”

History of Willys in South Africa from the NFI

• CATEGORIES: Features, GPA (SEEP), News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Regular readers will remember Claus and his brother from the CJ-2As they restored in South Africa.

Claus also made contact with the Northern Flagship Institution, a national museums institution that falls under the auspices of the Department of Arts and Culture in South Africa.  The NFI provided Claus with a detailed response that lists, based on their research, the jeeps that had entered the country.

Curiously, they don’t mention the SEEP (shown below) that is located at the South African Military Museum in Johannesburg.  Gavin Walkers Willys MA site has a couple photos of it.

Based on Claus’s suggestion, I did a quick search of the CJ-2A Page Forum and learned here are a few other South African CJ-2A owners as well.  So, I thought I’d publish this NFI historical information in hopes it helps others.

Thanks for sending it on Claus!

===============

From the NFI to Claus —

Thank you for your email query of 14 July 2008.   The South African National Museum of Military History, a component of the Northern Flagship Institution does not have complete records of Willys Jeep purchases by the Union Defence Forces or by the later SADF.  We have found some information which might assist you.  Much research is still required to fully answer your query.

Since the Willys Jeep was manufactured in the United Sates of America, all issued American equipment to British Commonwealth countries came via the Lend Lease agreement.  The Union Defence Forces had to work through the British War Department to obtain American Equipment via the Lend Lease.  The first Jeep, a Willys MB seems to have arrived in South Africa in about October 1943.  This Jeep was allocated the Union Defence Forces (UDF) number U 47505 and was used by Capt A A van Niekerk MC, Officer Commanding the paratrooper company of the newly formed SAAF Regiment undergoing training at Premier Mine, Pretoria.

During November 1943, a Willys MB Jeep – U 46-04, was used as a command vehicle during  training in the Barberton district, by the Officer Commanding, S A Armoured Brigade, Brigadier C L de W du Toit.

At about the same time (November 1943 – April 1944) some Willys MB Jeeps were allocated to the 6 SA Armoured Division (6 Div) in training at Khatatba in Egypt, the numbers were small but unknown.   We believe that 6 Div drew more Jeeps from British stores at Bari at the end April 1944, once they had landed in Italy.  The numbers are unknown but this information may be at the SANDF Archives in Pretoria – sandfdoc@mwebco.za.

Photographic evidence shows that the following units used Jeeps in Italy:

During the advance of 6 Div from Cassino to Rome – end May to 6 June 1944:

6 Div Postal Unit
12 Field Squadron, South African Engineer Corps

North of Rome and into Gothic Line:

6 Div Headquarters
11 South African Armoured Brigade Group Headquarters
Prince Alfred’s Guard
First City / Cape Town Highlanders reconnaissance platoon were issued with Jeeps
The Natal Mounted Rifles also had Jeeps by October 1944

During the spring of 1945 and after 6 Div had broken through the Gothic Line the following units are known to have had Jeeps:

7/64 Battery of the Transvaal Horse Artillery
Imperial Light Horse / Kimberley Regiment

The war in Italy ended on 2 May 1945.  On 14 May the 6 South African Armoured Division held a Victory Parade at the Monza Racetrack in which all their vehicles were paraded.  After the parade the vehicles were handed in to the transport park.  Later the vehicles were railed to Genoa to the 6 South African Armoured Division Vehicle Park.  A small number of men chose to stay on in Italy after the other servicemen had been sent home to the Union. Many of these men had girlfriends and wanted to stay on and prepare the vehicles for shipping to the Union.    The first ship left Genoa for Durban at the end of April 1946.  The ex British equipment was shipped first in eleven ships.  The American equipment was last to leave Genoa on SS Standridge on 3 May 1947, after much discussion on numbers and payment to the USA.

Only two Willys Jeeps and two 10cwt General Service Jeep Trailers were shipped to South Africa.  A third Jeep, purchased by Captain D C Clarke under authority dated 23 September 1946 was shipped on the SS Samarina on 24 September 1946.  This Jeep had the British War Department number WD 5662164. These are the only Jeeps to officially come from Italy to the Union.

In 1948, the UDF ordered two hundred and eighty nine Willys Jeeps, the model is unknown.  These were allocated the U numbers . U 75800 – U 76088.

Forty three, 1951, Willys 7 seater station wagons were also ordered by the UDF and allocated the U numbers  U 76177 – U 76219.

In 1960, twenty-five CJ-3B Jeeps were ordered as well as sixty-one of the more modern CJ-5s.  Of the total eighty- eight ordered, only eighty-five were delivered at first, the rest arriving at a later date.

In about 1963/64 the SADF purchased one hundred and nine CJ-6 Jeeps.  It is not known if they were manufactured by Willys Motors Incorporated or by the Kaiser Jeep Corporation.

In 1992 there were fourteen CJ-6 Jeeps at 4 Vehicle Reserve Park, Walmanstal, north of Pretoria.  These had the following registration numbers.

BCL 953 M             BCL 948 M   BCL 941 M   BCL 952 M   BCL 939 M   BCL 944 M
BCL 943 M             BCL 937 M   BCL 938 M   BCL 945 M   BCL 934 M   BCL 950 M

The above listed Jeeps were powered by 4 -cylinder engines.

BDF 775 M and BDF 760 had 6-cylinder engines.

The Museum would appreciate any information you may find regarding Jeeps in South African service.

Yours sincerely

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $4500

(Last listed 05/31/2009) It looks like a solid jeep.

“I am listing this Willys for my brother. It has been in our family since 1994 and been modified with a Chevy 350 engine and TH350 automatic transmission. Our uncle did most of the work on it. I’ll do my best to describe it.

350 Chevy engine from a mid 70’s Blazer. Was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago and runs very well. Starts right up and has more than enough power.
Chrome headers exiting the sides
TH350 transmission professionally rebuilt about 1000 miles ago. Runs very well with crisp shifts.
Dana 18 transfer case.
Dana 44 rear axle and Dana 30 front with the larger drum brakes. They were rebuilt about 1000 miles ago. Our uncle bought these from a guy that was going to auto tech school and they were rebuilt under the supervision of his instructor. They are gears low. I listed a tire off the ground and spun the driveshaft. It took approximately 5-1/4 turns so they are either 5.13 or 5.38. It’s gear for offroading so if you want to do alot of highway travel you would probably want to put in a Warn overdrive.
Repainted a few years ago. It looks good but isn’t a perfect show quality paint job. The body is very solid and rust free. The fenders aren’t rotted at the inner supports.
Very good condition chrome wheels with 33″ tires with about 1000 miles on them.
Tilt steering column with Saginaw power steering conversion
Heavy duty custom battery mount.
New electric cooling fan with recored radiator.
Good condition soft top with doors. Was originally red but was repainted black with vinyl fabric paint.”
