Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. UPDATE: The seller contacted me and wanted to update the listing. This CJ-3B has an OD rather than a PTO. Also, the seller has a good deal of images here. Finally, the engine is out, so it doesn’t run. This looks like it would make a great stock restoration projection.

As I mentioned a couple days ago, a reader named Dave spotted this article and wanted to share it with readers. The article published in the 1960 edition of All American Word follows the All American Engineering Company Testing the air drop of a jeep by a pallet rather than via a parachute. To test this concept, the AAE built a special vehicle to mimic the landing of a jeep atop a pallet at speeds of 135mph. As you can see, the test was successful (at least the one captured in the photos).
Dave writes,”I was in Georgetown, DE recently which is a small town on the DelMarVa peninsula, and I ran across this very interesting use for a VEC CJ2A! I think it might fit your recent “museum” series of posts and I’m sure that your eagle-eyed readers will immediately recognize the historical relevance of this column shift speed demon! Apparently, this was a precursor to what is now known as LAPES or the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System which is still taught, practiced and used today by our Military for forward area resupply missions. I watched C130 crews practice this (with varying levels of success)! at Whiteman AFB in western Missouri in the late 80’s. Fortunately by that point they were only destroying HMMWVs and military pickup trucks! The 8 of 10 or so operations that were succesful were really cool and you could certainly see the advantages of this type of operation.”

It has a 327 Corvette motor in it, runs great, Magnaflow exhaust, headers, new gauges, etc. The tires are practically new – less than 100 miles on them. This jeep would be perfect for someone who likes to go crawling, four-wheeling and more. I’m asking $5,000 OBO, or I’m willing to consider trading for an airboat. UPDATE: UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.
“The title says the identification number is GPW118786. According to my research that makes it an F4. The date of deliver is 6/6/43. The serial number on the data plate, and the frame, and the title all match. The body is in very nice condition. It has a few dents here and there but nothing major. There is some rust under the drivers and passengers opening, but its not bad. Looking under the vehicle, the only rust that I can see is on the floor support channels where they installed wood inside, those are rusted, the rest of the floor however is not rusted through. Under the mats there is some rust but it cleans right up with some pitting left. The front bumper is a heavy bumper and is not original as far as I know. there is a heater installed on the passenger floorboard.
The engine is an F head engine, not original to this Jeep. The previous owner left a note with the titles that stated the engine was new and not used much. The engine is spotless, not a bit of oil build up on it. I had the engine running but the distributor bound up and broke. I have a brand new distributor that goes with the Jeep.”

Some cleaning and paint (and a bumper and a headlight) would really help this jeep look good. This appears to have full floating hubs in the rear as well.

“For sale a 1960 Willy’s Pickup truck almost finished. Has frame up restoration, tons of new and rebuilt parts to go with it. Only need wiring, plumbing and the body finished. “Vehicle in good running order; Stock, straight 4 cylinder motor, 134 CIN; Motor strong, no knocks or oil leaks; Updated 12 volt electrical system; Recent transmission overhaul. Clean, with new paint, but rough body work on driver side; Rust free frame, recent front end work and shocks; Removable hardtop & rollbar; Tow bar; Removable rear bench seat. Stock spare tire (16.0 x 6 inches), rear mount; Drives well, but wanders at speeds over 35 MPH. New tires should fix this; Ready to return to stock condition or to modernize. Manuals and parts list included; Stored in garage.”
