1946 CJ-2A North Plains, Or $3800

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  Price dropped to $3800.  Additional pics.

Lots of good updates to this CJ-2A, but a few issues, too.

“1946 willys jeep.  The good: buick 231 oddfire v6 runs great, 3 speed manual trans, warn overdrive;, d44 rear axle with posi and i was told 5:32 gears, d35 front axle with posi and 5:32 gears, soft top (could use a little work above the doors the stitching came loose), full soft doors, cb radio, full cage, newer tires and wheel 95%, bucket seats with 3pt harnesses, fire extinguisher, tow bar, old electric winch not fast but it works good, tow hooks, fresh paint (a few small chips in the door opening from getting in and out), power steering, the body isnt perfect but it is in good shape for being 64 years old. Only a few very small rust holes in the floor.

The bad: Turn signals are not hooked up. Something is wrong in the drivetrain i think it is the overdrive something is either worn out or the linkage is out of adjustment everything seems to shift fine except the overdrive. the problem is it wont stay in gear it will randomly work and drive fine then pop out of gear and not move until it decides it wants to. it should be an easy fix but i dont have the time. if i fix it i will be raising the price. this thing is small it is the main reason i am getting rid of it i am 6’4″ and have no leg room i can barely drive it.

I am asking $4600 the way it is. possible trade for yj or tj wrangler must be 4.0 5 spd, 92+ f-250 or f-350 reg cab long bed 4×4 preferably with a 460, 93+ ranger 4×4 preferably extra cab and manual trans, or a 60s-early 70s muscle car like chevelle, mustang, charger, nova, cougar, etc.  email or call 503-962-9559 if interested.”

“I just plain do not drive this very much. 3 times in the last 4 years. Some bad. From sitting it has started to leak a little by the tranny and transfer case. Blinkers are not working which I am sure has something to do with why the brake lights dont work. The new oil gauge (psi) Is not working. I think I bought it with a default.  I have always kept this in the shop so the top is old and weathered if even all there. The price is set to sell quick so first come first serve. Other than that drive this anywhere.  503 396 1631.

(02/18/10) This looks pretty good. I’m betting some different springs have been added.  It sure doesn’t appear that their is enough length in the rear axle to properly handle the spring when it’s extended all the way.  However, that could just be an illusion.

Paul has lost his cool .. in a manner of speaking

• CATEGORIES: Builds, Features, News, Reader Stories • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Paul continues to make progress on his Stainless M-38.  However, he recently ran into a problem getting the radiator he needs.

He needs some ideas or suggestions.

I’ll let him explain:

Paul writes, “I’ve run into a bit of a problem with my perpetual Willys project and I need information and ideas.  I ordered a brand, spanking new radiator from KaiserWillys for the Buick odd fire engine I installed in my M38 thinking this was the best way to prevent overheating and additional problems down the road.  Boy, was I wrong!

The KaiserWillys catalog lists the Buick 225 radiator as being 17 inches high, 21 and 7/8 inches wide and 1 and 1/2 inches thick which is just about the perfect size for the space available under the hood.  Just to make sure I checked their online site and discovered a cautionary note mentioning this radiator could be either 17 inches or 22 inches wide and I was to let them know which width I needed.  To avoid any misunderstandings I called KaiserWillys and, after confirming the 17″h X 21 7/8″ w X 1 1/2” t, I placed an order for a radiator.  I even called back after I ordered it just to confirm the dimensions.  As I mentioned in a previous email I was told the radiator wouldn’t be done until the end of Feb. (I ordered the radiator the 15th of Feb.) and I was very surprised and pleased when the UPS guy delivered the radiator the afternoon of Feb. 19th.  The next day I carefully removed the radiator from the box and placed it into position.  Not only didn’t the radiator fit but the radiator cap was about 5 inches above the level of the hood.  Not good at all.

How’d they mess that up?

The radiator was 21″ high, not the needed 17″ so I called KaiserWillys again and it turns out the dimensions listed in their catalog, the dimensions listed on their web site and the dimensions they gave me over the phone are all wrong.  Not only did the radiator have to be sent back but Mike told me they won’t deal with radiators for the Buick 225 engine and he was sorry but he knows of no source for this radiator.  I’m not trying to pin the blame on anyone, I just want to find a this radiator which will fit my Jeep and allow me to attach an electric fan on the engine side without hitting the waterpump pulley.

My questions to you are

1. do you know the original size of the CJ5 radiator with the Buick V6 and did the Jeepster (Commando actually I guess) use the same size radiator?

2. Do you know where I might be able to purchase a used radiator (new would be better but I don’t think that will happen) even if it needs to be recored?

I realize I could notch the front crossmember and move the radiator forward (after trimming the shroud) but I’ll save this as a last resort.  The chances of me finding an original V6 powered Jeep here in the Great White North are pretty slim but I’m going to look anyway.”

My ideas

I told Paul that I ran a Pinto radiator with a buick 225 in my first Jeep.  I’ve also found some new radiators for sale for various 1980s buick cars. Here’s what I wrote Paul, “I found some other options using thefind.com.  I searched for ‘buick v6 radiators’. Here’s a radiator for a buick regal that is $89.  It is an aluminum 20-3/4 x 16-7/8 x 1-1/4, 1 ROW (and I’m assuming that is 20-3/4 wide, which isn’t safe to assume as you well know).  http://www.shepherdautoparts.com/autoparts/all_aluminum_radiator/buick/regal/w5HDm8OWw5TDl8K7w5rDksORw5HCosKi.htm.

Anyone else have ideas?

While you think about it, you can marvel at more of Paul’s handiwork – A table made with stainless legs and Ancient Kauri wood, along with a wall hanging from the same wood.  About it he writes, “Naturally the table legs are fabricated from stainless in a truss pattern.  Each leg is made up of 30 individual parts (not counting the attaching hardware) and by the time I was all done fitting and filing these parts I’d spent 78 hours just making the legs.  The wood took many more hours because ultrafine sanding is necessary to get the best grain activity>  After sanding the wood to 1500 grit I applied numerous coats of clear marine varnish (Interlux 95), wet sanded the varnish to 3000 grit and then finished it off by hand polishing the varnish.”

• CATEGORIES: M-38 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

It looks solid.

“It’s a Korean war era jeep. Runs and drives good with some reparible rust damage. It had a CJ5 or M38A1 overhead valve engine. I had to replace the engine with the original flathead side valve 134L, clean and seal the transmission and transfer case, put original rims on it, reinstall the glass, sand and paint the jeep, put original numbers on hood, replace the electrical and gauges, remake the driver seat frame; clean, sand, seal, and repaint gas tank; rebuild the distributor, new alternator and battery, and rebuilt/converted to 12 volt starter, replaced all fluids, rebuild the carb, new brake master and front brake sheos, repair the emergancy brakes, fix the speedometer gear inside the transfer case rear mount and replace cable with the speedometer guage, and fixed an intake manifold crack. The engine is a 1940s WWII ford GPW jeep engine. It runs perfect with good oil pressure and no smoke. All it needs now to be perfect is a new timing chain. I can hear it raddle a little bit. The seats in the picture does not come with it. An original M38 driver seat frame comes with it instead. thanks, Bryan.  cell Phone: 601-862-9873. Email: Bdawgs2007@aol.com.”

1960 CJ-5 Dayton, NV **SOLD** (includes OD)

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2500.

This appears to be an excellent price on a running CJ-5 with an OD, a full rollcage and a winch (though the winch is having an electrical issue).

“1960 (Orig Year) CJ5 Willys Jeep that has been customized for Off-Road Use. Added are Rebuilt Ford 289 Small Blk (V8) engine (approx 5,000 miles on rebuilt) with a T-90 3spd Full-Overdrive Transmission (3 stick adjustment, like the old Tractor Trailers — has overdrive to every gear, including reverse, so 6 forward gears). This vehicle is low geared enough to climb a hillside that the BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires (only 10k miles used), and you can walk it up from the outside. Painted 3 years ago and although not perfect, good enuf for off-road, with twin 7-gal fuel tanks. Added Bucket seats with heavy-duty Seat covers (seats are a little torn), Buick Tilt & Power Steering, New WIndshield and Wipers. Offroad lights and 10k lb Warn Winch. It would be a great project vehicle, as there is always little things to tinker with, but the only two issues to mention: 1> the big bucket seats and old military jeep frame don’t allow real big men too much comfort, so a larger person might want to switch out the seats; and 2> the warn winch is having electrical problems and I had the armiture looked at, but they told me it is part of the electrical relay or component in the winch, so I have not fixed that.  I am motivated to sell, and I know the value of this in excellent collectors shape would bring $5k, but I am willing to go half ($2500) or a near best offer.”

• CATEGORIES: Jeepster • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Jean-Sebastien forwarded a couple links for our Canadian Readers to enjoy.  I particularly love the trailer on this, though that Jeepster is gorgeous, too.

“I am selling this 1949 Willys Overland Jeepster Convertible .  It has a rebuilt 1964 Buick V6 and an Automatic Transmission.  I have 2 sets of tires.  True spoke western rims, and a matching trailer. Motor has approx. 5000 miles.  I have had it in a few parades.  Draws alot of attention if thats what your looking for.  Runs and drives really smooth.  Power steering, power brakes, have been added to this jeep.  The rear end is a ford 9 inch.   No oil leaks, or burning.  It has a new radiator.  I have removed the pin stripping in the pictures.  No rust of any kind.  No body filler of any kind.  This car is solid , solid solid.  You will not be disappointed is this Jeep.  I will assist in delivery of this jeep in any way I can.  I am located in Windsor Ontario just across from Detroit Michigan.  This Jeepster is titled a 1949 and some may say that it is a 1950.  The vin shows that it is a 49 but with all the dash and front end of a 50.  As far as I can tell the car was titled  in the 2nd half of that year,  Built in Ohio in 49 and exported to Canada the same year.  In the US it would of been titled a 1950.  If you require any other pics , let me know.  The car is in storage at the present time and I would need a day for fresh pics.  You can contact me at 519-978-3499 or email me at bdahmann@live.com.  Thanks for looking in and good luck.  I have a very reasonable reserve on this Jeep  . I reserve the right to end this auction for any reason.  It is also for sale locally . If you have a rating of 0 please contact me first.  I have a good rating of 100 percent and am very proud of that.   added note:  I also removed the bell in the picture of under the hood.  It was used for parades with the Shriners  at one time.”

Here’s another one courtesy of Jean-Sebastien. Bids have reached $9100.  No offense to the seller, but I don’t quite understand why someone would modify a ’47 into a M-38 at such a detailed level as this has been done? But, hell, I’ve done plenty of things that didn’t make any sense!

“This is a Collectors 1947 Willys Jeep  CJ2A modified to m38 with a military green paint job that is a year old. The seats were done year ago in green canvas. Jeep has a new go devil four cylinder motor that is green to match paint and was installed about year ago. Jeep runs great and has been garaged every winter. It comes with the one year old green canvas top. New unidirectional 7.00-16 Tires and green rims, Paint and Interior are in Great Condition. Everything has been replaced and redone from Brakes, Paint, Interior, Exhaust. The 4×4 works great with the 3 speed T90 transmission. I can provide more pictures on request.”
