Reader’s Build: Michael’s 1957 and 1955 Trucks

• CATEGORIES: Features, News

Michael writes that he’s owned several jeeps through the years.  Currently, he’s got two willys trucks he’s fixed up, a ’55 and a ’57 .  As you can see from the right and the first large pic below, the ’57 seems to have wings.  Most recently, he’s purchased a couple slat grille jeeps and is looking for info about and parts for them.

“Just wanted to say thanks for all the awesome info on your website! I learned to drive at the age of 10. My parents had a 1969 Jeep Gladiator Pickup. I used to fourwheel all over in it. It was given to me on my 12th birthday after I had blown up the motor wheeling in a rock canyon very similar to the Rubicon. What a time. We towed it back with a 56 Willys Wagon.

I currently own a couple Willys pickups a 55 and a 57. I’ve owned a couple 2a’s in the past and always kick myself for selling them! I am back though and looking for any info. on parts for a couple of slat Willys. That’s how I found your website. Thanks again. I’ll send you a picture of my 57′ “treading lightly?” Also pics of both are posted on car domain under the user name of UNIVERSALWILLYS1 (although it was hurriedly done so not very prof. looking.I need the time to fix them)”

Not bad for a parts jeep or fun jeep for $500.  It looks like most everything is there.

Book Review: The Jeep (book) by the Olyslager Organisation

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs, Books, Features, Unique Jeeps, Unusual • TAGS: .

I don’t know when or where it came from, but at some point my parents obtained a book simply titled “The Jeep“.  It was mostly a picture book, which as a young kid was perfectly fine with me.  I open and looked through it many, many times. Ok, I still open it ….

However, it wasn’t just a book with a few pics of jeeps you see everyday.  Instead, it’s a slim book full of a wide range of pictures.  Of course, there’s the standard bantam, mb, seep, gpw, etc. But, there’s also, for example, 3 images of the Willys/Nuffied modified airborne jeep, seen to the right (though not from the book — it’s from a russian site — the book images of the Willys/Nuffield are at the bottom of this post).

I bring this up, as I ran across a copy of the book at the Boise Library today.  So, I snapped a few images of the pictures with my digital camera (hence the poor quality – purchase the book to see them sharply) and will post a some of them.

I haven’t asked for permission to post them (I TRIED to, but can’t find the contact info for them), so I’ll add this pitch for the book.  This book is a must for any jeep nut.  While it’s a fairly small book with only 64 pages, the collectors prices (at amazon) were hovering around $45. It’s a perfect size for your kids.  The organization responsible for publishing the book is the Olyslager Foundation (link?), which has published a number of other cool books listed at the Open Library Project.

Now for some cool, but poor quality pics to wet your appetite…

One of my favorite sections of the book show how quickly a crate jeep can be put together.  The book documents this particular group only took 3 minutes and 31 seconds to put it togther.

Check out the rest of the pics …..

Flat fender racing jeep Wesport, Or $3500

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A, CJ-3A, Racing • TAGS: .

I’m not sure if this is a PNW legal racer or not.  It may just be a sand/mud buggy.  I can’t tell for sure, but I suspect the body is fiberglass, probably a bobcat body, as the rim around the back looks wider than a standard body.  I am wondering why they dont’ have a front bumper on the thing. There about $800 is tires alone, if in decent shape.

“i have a 41 flat fender willys jeep it has a 350 and a 700r tranny and a narowed toyota rearend and five point harrnesses it comes with a set of 31” paddles and a wheelie bar askin 3500 or trade for something 4×4 and of equal value.”

It appears the front end is slightly f&*$ed up.  I’m pretty sure those front wheels should be going the same direction.  If you have a front end, this one might be worth snatching up as the seller sounds like they might be will to deal to get rid of it.  Maybe it’s just a broken tierod?  It appears that might even be a terra tire on the front left.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Going to Denmark

This is a combo jeep of some kind.  Looks pretty nice, though it’s not perfectly accurate.  Maybe it’s just the title that’s wrong somehow?

“A great little jeep, runs and drives excellent. The good stuff and everything I’ve added, replaced, rebuilt, etc: Has a clear Arizona title, titled a 1948 Willys Jeep is turn key, start it and go, needs nothing. Original flathead 4 cylinder engine, converted to 12 volt, looks and runs like it was rebuilt at some time, runs great, near silent and smooth with excellent oil pressure at 45-50 psi and never any smoke. Original transmission/transfer case, also rebuilt at some time, shifts very tight, quiet, never does the “2nd gear pop” like so many Willys. “

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3800

The more I read the list of specs on this jeep, the more I liked it.  The drive train is a great combo for both on road and off road.  I think the addition of an overdrive would really complete this nice package.

“This is a 1948 Willys CJ2A with a Meyer power angle plow setup. I put the plow on 3 years ago and it was only used on my driveway.  This jeep has seen its share of off-road use so it isn’t a show vehicle. 1951 CJ-3A Meridian, ID **SOLD**

FINAL UPDATE: I dropped by the auction today. It was plenty busy;  with no parking lot, cars filled the side of the road for along ways both directions. A large number of items were being auctioned, so I chose not to stay and wait the hours it was going to take to get to the jeep.  I never did receive any emails in response to the ones I sent about the jeep.

I spent some time looking closely at the jeep.  According to the title, the jeep had been located in Prineville, Oregon.  It appeared to have an older inline 6 cyl engine, maybe a Super Hurricane.  The round front cross-member was partly cut and flattened on top with the radiator moved forward and installed on top of it.  The engine compartment was wired with care. The floor panel looked so good, I think it might have been a replacement.  It used to have a heater (heater button on dash), but that was missing. The paint looked as good in person as it did in the pics.  The body is very straight.  Overall it appeared to be in excellent condition.

UPDATE 2: No responses to any of the emails I’ve sent so far. However, I just discovered the Korean War National Museum.  It’s a going to be a “a world-class museum to ensure that the historical significance of the Korean War is recognized by future generations”.  It’s set to open in 2009 in Springfield, Illinois.  They’ve got a great video at the Museum’s website.  So visit and learn more about what they are doing.  In the meantime, I’m awaiting a response from the Executive Director — Might as well start at the top 🙂

UPDATE:  As I mentioned in the comments attached to this post,  CHOSIN FEW is a group that supports those individuals who participated in the Battle of Chosin at Chosin Reservoir during the winter of Nov/Dec 1950.  The symbol on the hood is the logo of the group.  The 40 below and 70 miles to go apparently represents how cold it was and how far they had to go to escape the waves of Chinese.  You can read about one Chosin survivor here (the Chosin battle starts about halfway down the article).  I feel that this is such a special paint job that I’ve emailed a variety of Chosin contacts I’ve located on the web in the hopes that someone who understands the meaning of it will purchase it.

This appears to be a very nicely restored CJ-3A that’s being auctioned as part of an estate sale/bankruptcy.  There is no description, but it appears that the restoration is close to stock.  I can’t tell what type of engine is in it.  Though not a stock paint job, it looks very good, smooth and glossy.

You can view all the pics at the bottom of this page:

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2000.

“I am selling a 1942 GPW. It has a bikini top a hard top with full doors and half doors. It has 538 gears and has a dana 44 rear with limited slip. It is sitting on 33 in BFG mud terrains and has plenty of grip. Custom suspension that makes this jeep articulate like a mofo. Wrangler 4 inch lift springs with a swing shackle reversal. It also has a 6000lb wench that works great. The original L134 flat head engine still runs like a champ and with the gearing has no trouble climbing plus it is good on gas. Runs great and ready to wheel. The bottom right image is before I painted the jeep grey.  There are many extras like tow bar and extra fenders.”
