Sears Allstate Locking Hubs

With Steve’s help, I have obtained some rare images of the disassembly of a Sears & Roebuck Allstate Locking Hub.  Accompanying them is a rough guide.

Here, the bolts are being removed:

Here the bolts have been removed.  Now, the big ring must be removed.

You need to get a hold of the ring and flexing it inward to get it out of the channel.

Here is the cap being pried out:

The ring holds in the four rectangular blocks that engage in the cams inside the cam to switch from locked to unlocked. After that, you’ll need snap ring pliers to remove the ring with the two small holes that you can see in the center around the spline.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1500.

Note that the front end appears lengthened.  That looks to be a tilt  fiber glass front end, though I don’t remember seeing them looking that stretched. The body might be a M-38 body as I see some tool indents on the passenger side.  The front end has some warn hubs similar to what you’d see on a 70’s CJ-5.   This might be a pretty good deal and an interesting project.

Many thanks to Tim from the WillysJeep.com site for sharing these unusual images. He notes he has many more.  I suspect over the next few months as the site grows it will become an important library of information.  Thanks Tim!

The timing of these photos is fascinating, as early 1959 was the ending of the Cuban Revolution and the assumption of control of Cuba by Castro.  Based on a few searches I just completed, it appears Fidel was a fan of jeeps and there are multiple references of him riding in a jeep.

And, in the last photo, that is Fidel himself.

Here’s a pic I’d like to get.  After recieving the pics from Tim, I did a little research.  Here is a video of an image of Fidel and Che Guerva posing in a Jeep in April of 1959. Unfortunately, I do not understand what the narrator is saying.

The pic shows four rims, but only 3 are 5 1/2 x 5 bolt pattern.

“15” by 7″ wide Ford bolt pattern Old style slot wheels ( made by Western) like the ones on Starsky and Hutch Torino or the old time drag car Willys of the day. These wheels were bought for another project that I sold and no longer need. The good: they are not cracked anywhere or have curb rash. The bad: three are 5 1/2″ bolt pattern , one is a 5″ .. I know I know this is goofy but i bought to go on a trike project and only needed two. Maybe you only need two or maybe you got a 5 1/2 laying around and need a 5″ because somewhere there is a set of three 5″ and one 5 1/2 ” we’ll make a deal to swap. Here’s another CJ-5/Flattie Body Merger.  But, what really is unusual is that bumper.

“Too many projects, this one has to go!  I bought this Willys last summer with intentions of rebuilding it.  What was I thinking?  I have way to many things going right now and feel overwhelmed.  So, here is your chance to get a project that I believe will be worth doing.

The guy I bought it from said it was running when it was parked two summers ago and I believe him because they drove it flat and broke the bead on two tires and that is where they parked it.  The jeep is complete as far as I can tell and body is in fair condition.  It rolls freely, I towed it home over 40 miles with the tow bar that is on it.  The engine also rolls freely, I can turn it by hand.  It has an alternator so it has been converted to 12 volt.  The transmission and transfer case shift just fine.  The clutch pedal is stuck and the break pedal is hard to push, don’t know what the problem is there, sort of feels like it’s in the linkages.”

This is a very honestly photographed Jeep.  The seller has been generous with closeup pics of problem areas.

“1946 Willys Jeep CJ2A. It has a clear New Mexico Title and the numbers on the data plates match the number on the title. The body is in what I consider to be rough shape with it’s share of rust in all the normal places, please see pictures. The jeep does run, I will re-install the gas tank if the jeep needs to be shipped. The rims are the stock 16 inch and are all in good shape, three of the tires are good, one of them is cracked from age and does leak air slowly. There are no seats at all. The Jeep still has the 6 volt system (brand new battery) I have not driven the jeep at all so not sure how all the running gear works. Everything seems to go in and out of gear. Buyer will have to arrange shipping or pick up the Jeep. I will be able to assist with loading. If you have any questions or would like more pictures of a specific area let me know. Here’s an interesting modification.  A Willys modifie to simulate a Gas Attack.  According to the details of the image, this image was taken at Geiger Field, Washington (which would be Spokane, Washington, if I’m not mistaken). “Officers and men are taught to be on the alert for a gas attack at any time. This jeep appears at unexpected places and sends out a charge of tear gas from the ingenious device attached to the muffler. Those in the vicinity, to protect themselves from the irritating gas, must be able to don their masks instantaneously.”

This CJ-3B has some WOW factor to it.  If it is as nice as this picture indicates, I’d say this is a good price.  That sure looks like a Texaco insignia on the side.  There’s likely a story that goes with this Jeep.

“Excellent Willys Jeep with Rear PTO Belt Drive thing for farm work! Just the Complete PTO setup is worth $2500 So I am tossing the rest in for free!!! As you can see it has been modified over the years. Looks like a willys truck nose, a Vauxall car cab, and a custom metal bed for cord wood. The only jeep stuff that looks original: PTO stuff, Frame, axels, engine, transmission. missing radiator.  I don’t want to part it out, that way somebody can mod their jeep with these parts and convert theirs over to a AG Jeep.  Engine looks complete with distributor, starter, and carb. I haven’t tried cleaning anything or try to turn anything over (The guy from Pawn Stars told me not to). ”
