Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Crosley was the maker of some of the prototype lightweight Jeeps the Army and Willys considered building. Apparently, Crosley continued down this path of lightweight utility vehicles. One of the results of this efforts was designed by the Crosley company and called a Farm-O-Road. The Crofton Bug, based on the Farm-O-Road design was actually produced by the Crofton Marine Engine Company. Only about 250 Crofton Bugs were built between 1959 and 1962 (or 1963). Like the jeep, these had some farm tools you could attach to these ‘mini jeeps’. You can learn more about this 1100lb vehicle at Tom’s Crofton Bug website.

1st up, his brother’s build — This is a mixed 1948 CJ-2A. The front loop is actually out of the red willys you’ll see in the next picture. They had it stored in the garage for about 15 years. Reuse and recycle. Perfect!

Chevy 350 engine with 4 barrel carb. 350 automatic transmission, power front disk brakes, power steering. Tilt steering column, in dash CD stereo, custom gauges. Custom interior. Runs and drives very nice, smooth and fast.No issues. Custom dual exhaust, new wiring and brakes. The Willy’s is rust free with the exception of a few small bubbles starting to show on the lower part of the drivers door.”

It has an overdrive, a sm420, and presumably a sm420-dana 18 adapater. There’s some value here. There is no motor.

The seller notes this has a “head turning paint job”. I could suggest that it’s not my head that’s turning, but I try not to be so blunt. If the seller reads this, I’d strongly suggest painting it green. The value will increase.

(09/15/09) This appears like a nicely original Wagon in good shape.
“Mechanically original (6 volt system). Engine rebuilt in mid 90s (valves replaced to accept unleaded fuel.) Reupholstered in 2002. Garage kept, been in family 40 years in dry NE Oregon. Teen daughters rolling their eyes. Priced at lower end of KBB for it’s condition.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** .. and it is heading to Norway. Congrats to James and to the new owner (whom I hope sends pics of it from Norway!). James wants to thank Ron from the G503 Site for helping out with this.
James has decided to sell his 1946 VEC CJ-2A #18526, column shift, driver’s indents, no rust. original docs and rear glass light. It works great and is in fantastic shape. He simply wants to have something he can modify and he doesn’t want to modify this CJ-2A because it is in such good shape.
James writes: It has original motor and all ACMs match 8057. A lot of work was done in 1985 at Archer Bros, Hayward. Motor wa rebuilt at 51k and is now at almost 62k. There is no rust. The springs and shackles not original; instead it has a superlift 2.5″. The top bow side holders and rear corner brackets have been removed. The front bumper mount has one ‘bubba weld’ and the rear bumper removed. I have the original rear light, trailer socket cover, and vacuum wiper. There are rear ‘bubba’ 4″ cutouts for lights. I’m the 4th owner and have lots of reciepts and docs. The Original owner had it until 1985, the 2nd to 2007, the 3rd to last year then me. This cj is a blast to drive and my family loves it, but I just can’t mod it like I want. It has survived 63 years without any major mods and I don’t have the heart to start ripping it up now.

“I have a 52 willys jeep that I bought to restore and drive but ran out of time and money and I am tired of seeing it rust away. I never tried to start it because the guy I bought it from had started to do the wiring. He said that the motor ran but that was three years ago. Jeep is full of parts and pretty much all there. It only has the drivers seat frame and I have 5 almost new military tires and rims for it. Please make offer because I would like to see someone finish this. It also comes with an extra front and rear axle.”

At first I thought this was some kind of Mutt. Upon further research, I discovered these were Austin vehicles modeled after the lightweight Jeep design, but were too low to the ground to be of any use offroad. These might be best thought of as British version of the dune buggy, given all the kit cars based on the Austin design.

According to Wikipedia, “The initial design was a prototype for a light military vehicle in the style of the American Jeep, but its small wheels and low ground clearance made it impractical as an off-road vehicle. It was subsequently offered in a civilian version as a low-cost, easily maintained utility vehicle. The Moke finally achieved success as a beach buggy—becoming a popular ‘cult’ vehicle in the Seychelles, Australia, the United States and many tropical resorts in the Caribbean. The original Moke used identical engine, transmission and suspension parts to the basic Mini.”
