UPDATE: Still Available

(11/27/2015) Plenty of rust. Doesn’t shift into reverse.

“Running original Jeep Cj2a with clean title.
This has the rare factory optional bed extender.
We rebuilt the carb and started right up after 15 years of sitting in a barn.
It ran and drove but last time i started it in did not want to go into reverse. This has the column shifter so i suspect the issue is in the linkage.
I bought this to restore but no longer have the facility to do the restoration.
Would really love to see this go to a good home .
This is a rare Jeep that is still pretty solid. Worst rust is on the passenger side back corner.
Frame has surface rust but is also solid.
Call or text if interested”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3500

“Totally stock and great original condition 1959 Willys CJ5 with a nice and complete Koenig hardtop. The only additions/modifications are Rambler hubcaps and a gun rack on the dash. Also includes a very rare Koenig bed extender with jerry can holders. Has the rare 60/40 bench seats, which are freshly and beautifully reupholstered. Original and working AM radio. As far as I know, it has less than 50,000 original miles. It spent it previous life as a ranch Jeep in Wyoming, and prior to my ownership, was in a barn in Montana. I have the notebook with service records in it from decades ago. Only minor surface rust, nothing cancerous, and as you can see, very solid and straight and dent-free body with no welding or patches on it anywhere. There is rust on the bottom of the tailgate in the usual spot where the hinges connect, but I have a brand new primered Rugged Ridge Willys tailgate that will be included (cost me ~$200). Fresh tuneup on the F134 Willys Hurricane engine, starts right up and runs really well. I’ve had it going a sustained 50mph up the very steep mountain highway near my house, but it spends most of its time being babied in my garage or cruising around my property while I grin from ear to ear. Fantastic classic Jeep and a ton of fun. Hate to sell it, but I have to. $3,500, pretty firm.”

The Taylors of Walnut Hill, Kansas, were featured in the March 1948 issue of Country Gentleman. They owned the Walnut Hill Hereford Ranch. I googled the ranch, but it no longer appears active under that name.

According to the article, “Tom Taylor bought his his CJ-2A jeep with some misgivings, but the jeep is probably his favorite piece of equipment. He now declares he wouldn’t know how to farm without it.”

1948-03-country-gentleman-cj2a-taylors2

Closeup of the CJ-2A

The article also notes, “The most original item is their repair-trailer, a wheeled frame of six-inch tubular steel which serves as compressed-air tank, carrying its own power, equipped for spray-painting, lubrication-pressure, welding and acetylene-torch cutting.”

1948-03-country-gentleman-cj2a-taylors1

Custom trailer for welding, cutting and mobile power. It appears the CJ-2A has an bed extender along with an extra tall rear seat (custom seat?).

This looks like a good price.

“I have 2 1952 Willys CJ-3A jeeps ….One has been taken apart and sandblasted and primed. The frame has been sandblasted and painted all the running gear has been redone with new parts. I have all the pieces to complete this jeep. Minus the motor and transmission. Thats where the second Jeep comes in. It has a pretty rough body, but the motor and tranny are good. It runs and drives, but it blew a head gasket and I have not fixed it yet. I also have a rare Willys Jeep Bed Extender that is included in the deal. I would like to sell all of this as a package deal. “This is a 1950 Willys CJ3a that I have just purchased out of Texas. Due to an emergancy I must sell this and my 1947 CJ2a. I bought this from the family of the original owner who purchased it new. He added the Warn Overdrive so he could drive hightway speeds. He also added the rare Willys Bed Extension so he could sleep in the back. The jeep is in great overall condition. Has a little rust bubbling behind the A pillar. The floors are solid no rust other than surface rust. the tool box under the seat is solid also no rust. Seats in great shape very soft. has a few scrapes and dents but over all great shape. At some point in its life an F134 engine was added. It has a Corvette side draft carburator (carter YF). It starts easily and runs great but smoke. May be stuck rings from sitting or just tired. I will include a good running F134 engine out of a M38a1 that I took out of a M170 jeep. It comes with a another T-90 transmission and transfercase. This engine has been converted to 12 volts. I will include the distriburtor, New High torque mini starter, new one wire alternator. 1946 Patent(s) For a Body Extension

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: In 2019 I posted a patent filed in September 28, 1946, for a “body attachment”. Yesterday, on an unrelated search, I discovered the names of the same parties, under a different lawyer, related to a patent filed a month earlier (August 12, 1946)  for a “body extension” for a jeep. The second patent is more detailed (seen at bottom) than the early one. Both were approved on the same date: June 5, 1951. See most of the body extensions produced over the years in this post

Filed August 12, 1946:

Attorney Roy Whittington assigned half this patent to William Isler and half, jointly, to Julius Negin and Ludwig Gaspar, the two who also filed the patent at bottom. The whys are likely lost to history.

1946-08-12-body-extension-lores

PATENT DESCRIPTION: June 5, 1951 R. D. WHITTINGTON BODY EXTENSION FOR MOTOR VEHICLES Filed Aug. 12, 1946 A TTORNEY.

Patented June 5, 1951 BODY EXTENSION FOR MOTOR VEHICLES Roy D. Whittington, Belton, M0., assignor of onehalf to William Isler and one-half to Julius A. -Negin and Ludwig J. Gaspar, J r., jointly, all of Cleveland, Ohio Application August 12, 1946, Serial No. 690,019 3 Claims. (01. 296-28) The present invention relates to vehicle-construction, and particularly to commercial vehicles such as trucks and the like, and aims to provide a practical form of extension for the body portion of such vehicles.

The invention has special reference tothe commercial type of motor vehicles such as have been known generally as jeeps in the army service, and which has a body of limited proportions and some forms of which have .an endgate at the rear end of the body. 7

Accordingly an object of the invention is to provide an extension of the body structure of this type of vehiclein the form of an accessory unit which is adapted to be mounted in the manner of a replacement for the endgate of the .vehiclebody and to receive said engate as a supplemental attachment serving the endgate function for said accessory unit….

Patent filed September 28, 1946:

I can only guess that this design was used by Newgren, as I *think* it was the only firm that built a collapsable body extension. The only thing is that Newgren had double supports, while the patent only shows a single support underneath.

1946-09-body-extender-patent1 1946-09-body-extender-patent2

PATENT DESCRIPTION: ATTORNEY Patented June 5, 1951 BODY ATTACHMENT FOR JEEPS Julius A. Negin, East Cleveland, and Ludwig J.

Gaspar, Jr., Cleveland, Ohio, assignors of onehalf to William Isler, Cleveland, Ohio Application September 28, 1946, Serial No. 700,006

11 Claims. 1

This invention relates, as indicated, to body attachments for vehicles of the type known as Jeeps.

As is well known, this type of vehicle, which was developed and extensively used during World War II, is coming into general usage for commercial purposes, but its use for such purposes is somewhat limited on account of its body shape and dimensions.

Another factor which has inhibited the use of this type of vehicle for commercial purposes is the fact that the spare tire or spare wheel of the vehicle is conventionally carried at the side of and adjacent the rear end of the body of the vehicle, in which position, it is so remote from the plane defined by the wheels of the vehicle as to constitute a hazard, particularly when attempting to park the vehicle in city streets.

The present invention has as its primary object the provision of an attachment or extension for the body of a vehicle of this type, which attachment or extension materially increases the carrying capacity of the vehicle. Continue reading
