Highways Across the Horizon by Dorothy Rogers

UPDATE: This ad published in the Los Angeles Times, June 15, 1962, by the Alaskan Camper Factory, welcomed Dorothy and Louise back into the United States after their trip around the world in an FC-170 (with an Alaskan camper, of course).

===================

Originally Published October 06, 2021: Highways Across the Horizon was written by Dorothy Rogers, who previous wrote Jeopardy in the Jeep.  I received a copy of it in the mail last week.  I knew the book was about traveling through Asia, but there were two things I didn’t know.  The first think I learned was that she and her travel partner Louise, traveled all the way around the world, starting and ending in New York.  The second surprise was their vehicle of choice:  a FC-170 with a camper.   Craig confirmed today that Dorothy and Louise piloted only the third known FC to make it around the world.  I can’t wait to read about their adventure.

Here are FC related pics:

1962 Article on a CJ-5 Build

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine • TAGS: , , , .

This May 1962 article in Four Wheeler magazine highlighted a few things. First, it’s a really clean build. I wish the pics were in color, as it’s deserving of some great photos.

Second, if I understand correctly, the rear bumper is actually a gas tank. I’m not sure I like that plan so much.

Third, given this jeep is near Colorado Springs, it probably has the Thor Electro-matic hubs, which allow a push button engaging of the front hubs. And, because they are short hubs, the front wheel covers can be placed over them.

Fourth, this has an early vacuum brake assist. Herm carries a newer version of this.

Fifth, the White top on this jeep is beautifully styled in my opinion.

“Luzon Red 1948 VJ Jeepster. Willy’s dealerships would have these on display in the showrooms. Because the level of detail is so perfect, only 150 are known to have been made.

They were made by a company called Al-Toy in the ’40s, right after WWII. The Jeepster Touring Car is considered the last American touring car, and so it has a following all on its own as a collectible.

This particular toy in this condition is hard to come by. Most have broken or missing parts (front bumper, steering wheel, vent window frames, missing hubcaps). This toy is in great shape with no broken or missing pieces. Hand painted Jeepster decals on the fenders and the painted dash gauges. The hand painted white wall tires finish out the incredible detail that went into this toy.

Jeep measures about 15” long 5” wide and 5 ½” high at the windshield. It weighs a whopping 6 lbs. All four rubber tires move freely.

Also included are 3 dealership service pins (10, 15, and 20 years of service). Ships to the lower 48 states only.”

UPDATE II: This sold on eBay for $20,300.

UPDATE: I thought this had sold on eBay 09/2020. On the ebay ad the extra plate could be seen. It is a remanufactured jeep, completed by the Moore Corporation (data plate on dash).

The seller of this jeep, which as been stored for 50 years, claims this is all original. But, this Willys MB had GPW tool lids. It also has a small plate, probably a reconditioning plate, above the standard data plates. I wish there was a close-up pic of the dash.

“Up for sale is a M38 Willys jeep, not a 4×4, this is a custom made frame with an original M38/willys body. powered by a VW 1600 cc engine rebuild with 38k miles. because of the engine is registered as 1964 VW. somebody put a lot of time, brain and money in this very cool toy. bought it for my daughter but she wasn’t comfortable with stick shift (specially VW is very different) My mechanic got the head lights and blinkers working after I bough it,

I got a new set of tires trough the pandemic and had a friend installed but they need to be balanced. needs the oil gasket replaced to fix a small leak. I was going to replace the radio but I did not have the guts to cut the very nice dash so I left the old one from the 80″s alone. I purchased a new set of front and rear shock that I will be glad to pass to new owner. It was my daily driver in town (Ukiah) last summer and got lots of smiles, tombs up and compliments. even do it has the 1600 cc engine I do not recommend it for use in freeway. front wheel disc brakes. I got some extra parts like a set of canvas doors and a couple other things that will go with the car.no trades, no low ballers nor scammers”

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A, Jeep Rods

It still needs completion, but it’s unclear what it needs. It hasn’t run since 2014. Having driven around LA multiple times, I’m confident that driving something this low isn’t what I’d want to drive there.

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/cto/d/los-angeles-1950-willys-jeep-rat-rod/7327088817.html

1950-cj3a-beverlyhills-ca1 1950-cj3a-beverlyhills-ca2 1950-cj3a-beverlyhills-ca3 1950-cj3a-beverlyhills-ca4

This project rod is so close to being completed, it begs the question “when is a rat rod really completed?”. Start with a fully boxed custom frame. Parts from GM, Ford and Willy’s get this rat a chance to run, or should we say terrorize, the streets.

Much patina has occurred, especially of late. Color starts with Army green and shows much surface oxidation. The sheet metal is based on Willy’s CJ with much, much modification. Channeled and fab’d windshield set the eye to the rest of the modifications. Body is bolted to a fully boxed and custom fabricated steel frame. Unlike many rat rods, the body is not channeled to accept the frame, but directly bolted to the top.

Black vinyl seats are from something small and fit tight and neat. Super-cool modified Willy’s wagon hatch-lid is fit behind the seats for rear-end and suspension viewing. Jerry cans at the stern function as the fuel tank. Surface rust is extensive throughout the interior, but there is no cancer visible. Hard probing shows all panels and flooring to be solid.

Small block Chevy power has not been fired since 2014, she does turn over freely. Custom fab’d headers with direct dumps have this rat shaking the neighbors. HEI ignition, aluminum intake and adapted down-draft twin carbs really set the heart of this rat. Aluminum radiator and electric fan keep things cool. Turbo 350 auto lead a custom driveline to the Ford 9” rear. Linked suspension and coil springs complete the rear. Solid axle front is sprung to the frame and adapted steering. Drums are located at each corner.

The listing can be seen here – https://www.clasiq.com/auction/1950-jeep-rat-rod/

Included in the listing is a pre purchase inspection, vehicle history, as well as a walk around video of the vehicle”

“This rare “flat fender” jeep has a rebuilt engine, new OEM carb, new tires, front springs, exhaust, new brake lines, wheel cylinders and master cylinder. I have checked and lubed the front and rear axles, and driven it around the block after putting it back together for my winter project.
I got this years ago as a complete “field find” and would run. It had been converted to 12V with alternator. However, I noticed milky oil due to head gasket leakage, and it had no brakes. The engine was pulled and inspected, cleaned and found cylinders had been bored and the pistons/rings in good shape. It was then reassembled with new bearings and gaskets.
I replaced the master cylinder, all the brake lines and installed new wheel cylinders. I did not replace the old drums and brake shoes. I cleaned and repacked the front hubs/wheel bearings and the front and rear differentials covers were pulled to inspect gears and add new gear oil. This winter it was further restored with a new carburetor, new exhaust system, new tires, and new front springs/shackles. The rusty floor was treated and painted with POR15 and the body was sanded and hand painted with red rustoleum.
It starts easily and I have driven it around the block, but needs additional work before being “road worthy” such as new brake drums/shoes, wiring for lights and gauges, and oil leaks from the tranny/transfer case.”

The Spirit of Tomorrow

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old News Articles

As part of the development of this uniquely styled rear-engine car, in 1937 Basil (Barney) Oldfield built a prototype he called the “Jeep”. The “Jeep” sold him on the idea of a rear engine vehicle, so he  began development of a safer, more dependable vehicle built around the rear engine. Unlike Tucker’s rear-engine auto design, Barney’s “Spirit of Tomorrow”, completed in 1942, did not lead to a manufactured product. But, Barney did achieve his goals, as Ralph Nader approved of his vehicle, claiming it was roomier, safer, and had more visibility.

This September 05, 1967, article form the Victoria Colonist (Victoria, B.C.,) provides some good early history on the vehicle.
