Just a Couple Updates for Thursday

Just a couple updates for Thursday.

I’ve been completing the set up of my 6 year old new-to-me MacBook Pro 15″ laptop computer, so that distracted me from updates yesterday. My 8 year old 17″ MacBook Pro laptop encountered screen problems after three years of use (I bought it NOS in 2016 as a backup … the failing screen is a known issue, but I’m past the warranty), so I had to return to my 10 year old 17″ MacBook Pro laptop, which is still doing pretty well (except for a stiff touch pad and just a tad slow), until I could get my new-to-me laptop up and running. Now, I can turn to fixing my 8 year old laptop for a backup computer.

1959 Article on Ted Bullimer’s Jeep Movie

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

This article from the April 15, 1959, issue of The Sun (out of Stark County, Ohio) highlights Ted Bullimer’s a second film, “The Four Seasons of Scandinavia”, an exploration of the four seasons in Scandinavian countries. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t have anything to do with jeeps. His first film, a travel-adventure movie “By Jeep Around the World”, shared his world trip in a Wiillys Wagon. Thanks to Merlin for spotting this article.

Ted’s daughter Elizabeth wrote a book and included an acknowledgement to Ted and his wife Ruth Ann for teaching her how to travel and for inspiring her to explore the world. In it she mentions a third film by Ted, “Eternal India”.

June-July 1956 Willys News

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: .

This issue of Willys News highlighted a new advertising campaign, the “Gets there . . . works there . . .  anywhere!” magazine ads (will highlight those on Thursday). Page 3 has some advertising reprints (lower left pic), showing the diversity of ‘Jeep’ ads (I hope to find examples of all of these for a future post). Also on page three appears to be “NEW LIFE” ads that include concentric circles. Maybe that was a local parts dealer campaign. I’ll have to see if I can find newspaper examples of that campaign from DC newspapers of the time. On Page 2, there’s an image of the Light Rescue Truck, featured in yesterday’s post about the Light Rescue Truck brochure.

Ted Bumiller’s trip around the world was highlighted in this issue as well. More information this trip, including reference to a film about it, can be found in this 2016 film and lecture post.

The Investigators: A Watercolor Illustration

• CATEGORIES: Artists/Drawings, Features

Blaine spotted this watercolor illustration, titled The Investigators, that shows some sailors in a jeep ogling two women standing next to the Greenpernt Grocery. The watercolor sold for $287 at auction in April of 2019. It’s larger than I initially thought at almost 3 feet wide (35.75 inches) and 28.75 inches tall. I could find nothing about an artist named “Sweet”.

The name “Greenpernt” might be a reference Greenpoint in Brooklyn, New York. Apparently, Greenpernt was how Brooklyners referred to the area at one time. As one person wrote on a remembrances page, “My Brooklyn was High School days riding the GG train to Brooklyn Automotive in Greenpoint (Greenpernt to my dad)”.

There’s also a corner of Noble St and West St (note the signs in the illustration) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that suggest this corner might have inspired the artist.

Light Duty Rescue Truck Brochure Form W-F56-1

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features

UPDATE: Dan’s got a good thread related these trucks at the Old Willys Forum. The 1956 June-July issue of Willys News included a reference to this vehicle.

I suspect this brochure, Form W-F56-1, was published in 1956, so I’ll republish it here as we are attempting to move through the 1956 brochure year. My guess is that this eight page brochure was a lunch brochure for the light duty rescue truck.

One great thing is that it has a list of all the equipment that is supposed to come with truck, plus a picture showing how it was organized in the back.

1946 Photo of a Waterproofed Jeep on eBay

• CATEGORIES: Features, Old Images

UPDATE: This was one of at least two press photos taken and published that included Roy Harmon and this waterproofed jeep. The other, available on eBay in 2017, is shown below.

View all the information on ebay

“1946 Press Photo Marine Sergeant Roy Harmon with Jeep at Bay Ridge, Maryland. This is an original press photo. Trucks – US – Marine Sergeant Roy Harmon of Washington, DC, shows the periscope-like manifold extensions and other waterproofing installations on a conventional jeep, just prior to an actual demonstration at Bay Ridge, Maryland, Thursday. He drove under water to a depth of six feet. Navy plans to use submarine jeeps along beaches and in fording streamsPhoto measures 9 x 7inches. Photo is dated 10-19-1946.”

Original Post in 2017: As part of the post, Luis added the following comment:

“Its a true USMC jeep as seen by the use of the electric “Dynamo” windshield wiper motor which were used only on Marine Corp jeeps, this motors are quite rare and highly desirable for a true USMC jeep restoration.”

“1946 Press Photo Bay Ridge MD Sgt Roy Harmon USMC in underwater jeep. .This is an original press photo. Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 10-17-1946.”
