1960s Colorado Mountain Safari Brochure

Sometime in the 1950s Bob Meyer partnered with Lloyd Sehnert to form Mountain Safari, a guide company out of Walsenburg, Colorado, The pair took clients into the Sangre De Cristo’s in Southern Colorado.

According to Bob Meyer’s obituary, Bob “took his jeeps where no one had before, including the Walsenburg fair grounds where he had challenged local horsemen to a calf-roping competition wherein Bob had mounted a saddle to the hood of his jeep so he could freely swing his lariat and lasso the calf.”

Sterand Loco, built in 1902?

Merlin mentioned this vehicle (and article), called the Sterand Loco, in a Facebook post. Various sourced indicate it was built in 1902, but he felt it looked more like a 1920s build. I agree with him, that it is a cool car, but I am not steeped enough in early car history to know for sure when it might have been built.

After some internet searches, I found the engine was consistent with 1902 (a Rutenber 4 cylinder engine). However, after Googling and checking newspaper articles prior to 1920, I could not find what I felt was a definitive source for the date of the vehicle’s creation (no info on why it is called a Sterand or any promotion surrounding it’s inception). The most I could find was a postcard (from this website) that discussed what the article stated.

Still, it’s a cool car.

“Up for auction is this 1949 Willys Overland Jeepster. Very solid sheet metal, I could only find two rust through spots on it, one behind drivers door and one on the left lower hood which I took pictures of. It has light surface rust that should sand off easy. The engine turns freely, trans shift through gears and it rolls very easy. It does steer too. Gauges busted out. Car is pretty complete. “1948 Willys CJ2A with clean Utah title in hand. The Good: 350 CI Chevrolet Goodwrench crate engine with very few miles, it runs well. Edelbrock Pro-Flo multiport EFI, adapter bellhousing mates to the original manual transmission, transfer case features twin shifters. Clutch is like new, All new brake shoes and wheel cylinders, new wheel bearings and hubs in front axle, and lots of other new parts. AutoMeter gauges all work. Includes a soft top. All fluids are fresh. The Bad: Power steering isn’t connected, unsure if it will work or not. Brakes and clutch are not working, likely a bad master cylinder and possibly a clutch slave cylinder. Some cancer on the floor pan support rails which is common because these were built with wood between the metal in these areas. Otherwise the rest of the body is cancer free. This 1948 CJ2A is a great platform for a rock crawler, sand buggy, or whatever your vision is. The 350 small block Chevy has tons of power for a small, lightweight vehicle like this. You can finish it as is or put the clean body on a custom frame built for whatever you’re in to.”

Updates Are Back

We still have some work left to do, but we got a whole lot done. I was able to help Ann with a bunch of stuff and work on the jeep some. The new irrigation systems are up and running; the calves are dining on the neighbors grass (to help out the neighbor), and our front drive/parking lot (just over 10,000 sqft) has been filled and oiled heavily and looks way better.

Here’s a quick peak at the small gauge cluster setup. seats and top are up next, though it will probably be a couple days. I need to build some more boxes for Ann.

Here is your chance to own a Beautifully preserved original 1942 Ford “script” GPW Jeep. Very rust free body. Hood numbers and Nice undamaged data plates, serial #18xxx , 4/42 …..has Ford engine and drivetrain. An excellent Start to a museum quality restoration.
Frame etc. are in very good condition, Besides the rear crossmember that has been cut. I have included an original Ford crossmember to replace. unfortunately, Inside of body has various punched drain holes, that could quite easily be welded and patched.All Ford seats are also original to the jeep. Please message me with questions, clean title ..thanks.

Jeep did run before being put into very long term storage, will need to complete going through of all systems to be drivable. Does have original Ford engine block that turns with good compression. I will include the correct ford head. Extra missing parts as needed, including windshield.”

“Top end was rebuilt on engine but the new oil line broke causing the lower end to knock. May just need bearings which are easy to install. It was a Shriners car, so interior is not original. Carpet is indoor outdoor. Not sure of rust? Top bows are rusty and not installed. And has all but one fender steps. Rare car. Fun to drive. 6 volts, except to start is 12 volts. Not sure why they didn’t just convert it to 12 volts. Looking to sell or trade toward a 67 to 72 C10/c20 plus cash. Looking for a 67-72 c10. Box full of trim and various parts including a used working speedometer. My hands don’t work anymore so I’m not able to repair it. It’s in East Wenatchee”
