1943 Modified GPW Bozeman, MT **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB), Sedan-jeep, Unusual • TAGS: , , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

Thanks to Roger Martin for sharing this unusual vehicle. The buy-it-now price on this highly modified GPW/truck is $14,995. I’m not clear how the seller arrived at the price, but the vehicle itself is a whimsical item that seems to need some work.

“This is a very special vehicle I found a few months ago that came from a ranch in eastern Montana. Perhaps some handy rancher wanted a Jeep pickup before Jeep ever offered one. Perhaps he could not afford or justify the cost of one and decided to build one from a WW II Jeep, an extra WW II Jeep frame, an early Dodge pickup cab and the front of an as of yet unknown early steel pickup box.

This truck appears to have a chassis made out of a pair of WW II Jeep chassis that were cut off and butt welded together in the center to make a chassis that has a wheelbase just over 2 feet longer at 105-1/2”. That is 25-1/2″ longer than the stock WW II Jeep chassis that has an 80″ wheelbase. Someone then added a cab from a 1933 to early 1935 Dodge pickup or 1-1/2 ton truck so they would have some weather protection from the sometimes wild weather here in Montana.

What really impressed me about this truck the moment I first saw it is the amount of work some reasonably skilled craftsman went to to build a 4 wheel drive pickup out a tiny WW II Jeep. I have seen literally hundreds of WW II and later Jeeps in my life so far that have had cabs added to the original Jeep body but I have never seen one that had a pickup or truck cab installed on it like this truck has. Add to that the fact that the cab on this truck has the very attrractive backward opening “suicide” doors from the early 1930’s and one has a very special vehicle.

Not only was a completely different cab installed on this “stretched” Jeep chassis, but that cab was subjected to some very interesting modifications. The most obvious modification is the very special rounded cowl that adapted the cowl of the Dodge cab to the back of the flat Jeep cowl right bvehind the Jeep hood. I am very sure that that cowl adapter was not hand formed but I have not yet figured out what that specially formed piece of sheet metal may have been used on originally.

Please also notice the very significant fact that the as of yet unknown Jeep builder adapted a “V” windshield to the front of the Dodge cab that originally came with a flat whidshield. I have yet to figure out what vehicle that “V” windshield originally came in. Please help me here if you possibly can. Another modification to the Dodge truck cab would be the fact that it has a steel insert in the top of the roof rather than the original fabric roof that it came with when new. I have seen hundreds of Model A Ford and other similar vehicles from the 20’s and 30’s that had similar steel roofs installed when the original fabrick roofs went bad.

Canfield Folding Wrecker Calgary, Canada **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Features • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD**

Glenn’s selling this hard-to-find folding wrecker made by Canfield.

“Want to stand out at the car show this year guys? Here’s your chance, The second image will give you an idea of what this thing looks like once it’s put together I’ve only ever seen pictures of one of these before and this particular one I brought in from North Carolina of all places

This is an extremely rare Canfield folding, PTO winch included and correct for the time. But not necessarily the right one for the Wrecker but no one will ever tell the difference as it is the same brand that Canfield used and the same capacity. Also included is the extension boom”

Tow-Loader Tractor Corp #1002

• CATEGORIES: CJ5, Features • TAGS: , , , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Maury spotted this one-off CJ-5 backhoe tractor combo. He wrote, “I was helping my brother in law pick up some car parts this past weekend, and ran across this interesting CJ5-based vehicle.  It was made by the guy who owned the business that was selling the car parts, and he told me it was a one-off he created years ago in Michigan in the hope of successfully marketing it.

The CJ5 body was bought new from AMC separately, and installed on the heavy steel  frame he created for it.  He said the resulting vehicle was the only loader-backhoe he knew of that could go 80 m.p.h.!”

This looks like a nice rig.

” Up for Auction is a 1963 FC-170 wrecker. I’ve decided it was time to let someone else have some fun with this very unique piece of Jeep history. Everything works on the truck. It’s been in the shed for the last 6 years only taken out one or twice during the summer to cruise around a little It runs and drives. This last winter was not good when I opened the shed in the spring I found that the two side windows cracked and something dinged the cab, it will need a tune up as it runs a little rough.”

(07/28/2015) This has an interesting rear. For some reason it has the PTO bar in back?

“My dad’s 53 Willy 4X4 , straight six “Super Hurricane” 4 speed manual, hi lo transfercase. It does run but needs brake work and a few odds and ends tiddy-ed up. It has a winch mount in front and in the bed of the truck; along with a gin pole setup. We rebuilt this many years ago from the radiator to the tailpipe and used to take it to Colorado to use on trails or general running around while camping. It has a few modifications for the trails but for the most part it is stock.

1957 Truck and 1962 Tow Truck Antioch, IL **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Willys Trucks • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

This auction is for two trucks. The ’57 is apart, but has a title, while the tow truck doesn’t have a title.

“Auction is for a 1957 Willys Pickup, with clear title, that is in pieces however you will receive at no additional cost a Really cool Willys Pickup/Tow Truck. This is a project that needs some finishing touches however most of the heavy lifting is already done. Pretty solid however the cab has had some repairs that are less than perfect. Serial number for the Tow Truck is 55268 70575. Most of what I did was major mechanical…new timing chain and gears, new electronic distributor, rebuilt carburetor, new clutch and pressure plate with turned flywheel, new speedometer cable.

* used some parts from a 1957 pickup that will also be included in the sale, specifically the T-90 trans and cross member as well as the wiper motor. Truck runs great, clutch is smooth as silk. Needs new front windshield, tail lights and other minor finishing touches. This is as close to original as it gets…she isn’t fast and drives like she’s 50 years old but it is really cool. You will receive clear title for the 1957 and all remaining parts from the 57..cab, frame, axles, etc. The Ramsey pto isn’t hooked up but is included as well as the drive shaft to the winch. Front pusher bumper and plow included. The plow pump needs an adjustment to the check valve as it doesn’t always stay up. You will also receive a brand new radiator and plastic gas tank however the ones in the truck are fine. Buyer could use the Tow Truck as parts Truck to refurbish the 1957…just a thought.”

Wrecker from Jack Tipple Motors

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, Old Images • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Paul Barry shared some photos of the truck shown below. The hamilton toy wrecker is cute.

Paul wrote, I kept asking about the tow truck. I guess the owners got tired of me asking and said if I wanted the tow truck I had to buy all the Willys stuff left over from the dealership. Shucks!

The story behind the truck is it was ordered from Toledo with a Canfield wrecker and was delivered in 1955 along with a new CJ-5. The truck arrived in red primer, as it was to be painted the yellow and blue AAA colors, the business was a AAA station since 1927. The pair of jeeps arrived very late at night and as was the custom the transport just dropped them off in front of the store. When morning came, only the CJ-5 was there, no tow truck to be found. I suppose phone calls were made and the truck was supposed to be right in front. Someone came into the station later that morning and said they saw a tow truck stuck in the riverbed back at the crossroads. So they took the old wrecker and recovered the new one In the Eel River (ed note Ferndale is just south of the Eel River). The local hooligans stole the truck and since it was delivered with only a couple gallons of fuel, ran out of gas while “wheeling” it.
