Video — History Channel Modern Marvels, The Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs, videos • TAGS: .

The history channel series Modern Marvels did a fine show on the history of the jeep.  There’s some great bits of info, pictures and videos.  I think it’s worth watching, even just to watch the video of the experimental ‘jeep helicopter’.  The youtube version of this episode is divided up into 5 sections.  The nice feature is that once you start watching the first one, each successive video will be launched automatically.

My only contention with the show is that one narrator suggests that Willys invented four wheel drive.  Actually, four wheel drive had been around for about 50 years.   I wrote the following several months ago (though didn’t post it):

“A four wheel drive system for vehicles was patented 48 years before the development of Bantam’s BRC (Bantam Recon Car aka Mark I), the very first jeep (followed by 69 prototype BRC-60s aka Mark II), the precursor to the jeep and the decision behind the military to issue a call for prototype 1/4 vehicles (to which three companies responded:  Ford (Pygmy), Bantam (BRC-40) and Willys (Quad).   Porsche developed a four wheel drive electric car prototype in 1900,  2 Dutch brothers built a four wheel drive Spyker race car in 1904 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyker).  The Four Wheel Drive Auto company of Wisconsin built 20,000 four-wheel drive trucks for the British and American Armies during World War I.”

Now, maybe Bantam invented the modern transfer case.  Of this, I’m less sure.  I haven’t found any evidence that certifies the inventor of the transfer case.

1945 CJ-2A Huntington Beach, Ca **Sold**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , .

UPDATE:  Lee just bought this Jeep. Congrats!

This restoration looks beautiful, though if this is really a ’45, then I think it should have the column shifter.  It’s beautiful and I rather like the burnt (?) orange.  The one element I don’t like is the ‘all wheel drive’ plaque on both sides of the hood.  It’s also missing the rear soft-top bars holder on the driver side.

“The vehicle IS titled as a 1943 though the serial number on the vehicle matches the code for a 1945. The transmission is a 4 speed.”

New fuel tank. Does not run and no title. All major components seem to be there. With a little work should run. Email for photos or questions. Thx – Ben”

1963_dj3a_surrey_houstonThere are a TON of great pictures of this Surrey.  I don’t think I’ve seen this Surrey listed previously, but I might have missed it;  it looks like no expense was spared in it’s restoration.

“Purchaced by Wayne Davis because his wife liked the way it looked, this Gala-Surrey was purchaced at a small Jeep dealer in Cleveland, Texas, a full restoration began with an unlimited budget. The car was brought back to its original color scheme of pink and white as no detail was overlooked. The end result revealed a car ready for any show.  Contact Jose at 281 497 1000 with questions about this Jeep”

1944 MB Port Angeles, Wa eBay

• CATEGORIES: MB • TAGS: .

1944_mb_portangelesThere’s been a variety of updates to this MB, including the rear bumper, the later model windshield, the radiator, the wiring and more.  I’d have to agree with the seller that this might make a good platform for a restoration project based on the pics.

“This is a 1944 Military Jeep delivered June 12, 1944. The original zinc dash plaques match the frame serial. The engine serial is 3J50087. I do not know for sure if it the original engine for certain. It has been converted to 12volt. I started working o this Jeep in 2003. Since then I have installed, rebuilt, or replaced the following.—Engine gaskets, timing gears, mounts, radiator, belt, hoses, coil, plugs, distributor, carberurator, and air duct. Brakes, changed to 11″x2″ duo-servo shoes, hoses, steel lines and switched to dual reservoir master cylinder. Locating it in the stock location with a kit from ATV, retaining the stock pedals. 1946 CJ-2A Somerville, Tx $3500

Sounds like this seller owns several jeeps. It has some good updates.  The front of the hood looks a little bowed; maybe it’s just an illusion from the pic.

“80% original 1948 CJ2A Farm Jeep. Built for trail riding. Low mileage, good running Buick v-6 231 adapted to stock tranny trans-case. Axles have 5:38 gears and the front end has been updated with 11″ brakes. Rear end is lincoln locked. Full roll cage w/pads for safety. Body is in very good condition for the year, but has a little rust. Dual exhaust, newer covered seats, no rear seat. Has PTO output on tranny with shifter. Working heater(rare). 33″ mud tires. Jeep runs and drives good. I have it registered for the street as an antique til 2013. Needs brake lights wired and brakes bled, but stops fine. Jeep is exempt from inspection because it is registered as antique. I have to many Jeeps, not enough time! … I’ll post pic tomorrow. Thanks,”

UPDATE: Was on eBay. **SOLD**

“Here is MB 192498 which is a December 1942 MB. I found the jeep on a farm here in California and it is a very solid jeep. The old guy I bought it from had owned it for over 40 years and used it for irrigation in the hay fields. There is very little rust but it does have some dints and dings. It has an F head motor that I was told runs and just needs a battery but I would have a mechanic check it out. It has all the gauges and an early windshield. I can provide a correct L head engine for an additional $500.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $850.

I’m guessing the pictures don’t do this jeep justice?  Only $850?  I don’t see any duct tape or baling wire, so it must be worth at least a $1000?  Definitely worth a look.

“This is a 1946 cj2a willys jeep. it runs, drives, and the brakes work. the body is in pretty rough shape. I would say that from the windshield back it is shot, but im also not a body guy. the motor runs good, smokes alot. the drivetrain is in great shape 4×4 high and low works. the frame looks very solid, i didnt notice any rusty sections. i dont want to try to fool anyone, this jeep needs some work. it is drivable as is but needs some tlc. i have too many projects and need to sell this one unfortunately. im asking 850 obo. “

1956 CJ-3B Charlotte, NC $6500

The windshield looks a little unusual on this CJ-3B.  It appears to be well maintained.

“This is a 1956 jeep willys cj3b, it has a F-head 134 engine, T90 tansmission(3spd, 4wd works like a champ, superwinch hubs. dana44 rear axle, exterior recently painted and has a bedliner coating in the back as well as the front of the interior of the tub…. Its missing two guages and needs a little bit of wiring but its a nice jeep for someone to tinker with but it is a blast to drive, the serial number is 32720 and in doing some research I found out that this jeep came from the west coast which explains why it has very minimal rust.”

1946 VEC CJ-2A Kansas City, Mo eBay

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A • TAGS: , .

If you are looking for an early CJ-2A, this has got some good elements, including the driver’s side cutouts, the column shifter, and a heater.  The passenger side fuel hole is interesting; I don’t believe that was stock?

“This early CJ-2A has an ID number of 16741.  It is a 3 speed on the tree.  It has a clear MO title. Below is the description: Motor – Org. 4 cylinder.  Just got back from machine shop.  All four cylinders were re-sleeved.  Crank was polished.  New pistons, valves, springs, etc  Everything still in boxes as you can see by the pictures. Interior – I have no seats. Does have a roll bar.  Floor is solid, except for the “bed”. It should be cut out and fitted with new metal.   Exterior – The only rust I can see is the passage side step. Some of the Hat Channel underneath will need to be cut (maybe 3 feet)  Tailgate is orginal, but is pretty rough.  I have no windshield and I don’t believe the hood is org. because there is no Willys stamped on it.”

I also replaced the choke cable. It has extra wide offset wheels with P2325/75/R15 tires that are in great condition. The windshield frame and a new grommet are included, but I do not have the glass. 1950 M-38 Bonnie, Ill eBay

• CATEGORIES: M-38 • TAGS: .

Probably the worst feature on this 18,000 mile M-38 is the paint job — the painting over of gauge rims always detracts from the quality.  The driver side springs look a little fatigued as well.  Otherwise, it looks to be a good restoration candidate.  The seller does not mention the jeep specifically in the ad (a little odd) — instead, the seller describes a little history of the M-38.

“The M38 Jeep was the first post-WW II jeep, based on the civilian model CJ-3A, but upgraded for military use. It was known by Willys as the model MC. It featured flat fenders, a one-piece windshield, bottom-mounted wipers, a fuel filler on the left side near the driver’s seat, protruding headlights, and an air vent at the bottom center of the windshield frame. The 80-inch wheelbase M38 weighed 2,750 pounds.”

This is one of the most rusted flat fenders I think I've ever seen.  Next, I noticed the rear PTO water pump, which was cool.  Then I noticed the solid back — no tailgate, yet the body doesn't look like a MB/GPW.  It's hard for me to believe that this jeep rusted so much while in storage.

"Willys,4 x 4. NO TITLE. year unknown, needs complete resto. has drivetrain intact. rear water pump pto driven. was in storage for 25 years until last week…. coalbiz2001@hotmail.com"

The seller claims this is a 1941 Willys, but I don’t see much MB left in this jeep.  The rust looks more serious than suggested by the seller.  This jeep sports a Studebaker flathead 6, which I know nothing about, but sounds fun.

“Old military jeep. Runs, brakes may need adjusting from sitting. Body has some typical rust but nothing that can’t be fixed. Has Studabaker Champion flathead 6, T84J trans. Dash tags and clear title. Tag dated 12/31/41. This comes with lots of spare parts. UPDATE:   **SOLD** Was $17,000

“2 Door Wagon, 6 Cylinder 230 Tornado, Power Brakes, Power Steering,4 Wheel Drive,Trailer Hitch, Winch

It’s 1962, open the passenger door, a 60/40 split! The 40 jumps completely out of the way, making it easy to load into the rear bench seats of this classic 2 door model. Whats this? Another 60/40 split, need something out of the back? No problem, just go get it! And oh by the way, there’s more leg room in the back seat of this vehicle then any modern SUV. Flip the rear seats forward, open it’s real “Tail Gate” and it’s just begging for 4 Longboards and some sleeping bags. In 1962 the Wagon was powered by a brand new 6 cylinder 230ci Tornado. A very unique engine, intended to be reliable and deliver plenty of low end torque. Some would say it was the perfect engine for a Jeep!”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.

The term ‘rare’ accompanies a variety of FC-150/170s.

“This extremely rare 1963 Jeep Willys FC-170 4X4 is both a stake bed pick up and a hydraulic dump bed. The trucks prior owner was into these vehicles in a big way and kept his eyes open for the right FC to purchase for over 15 years. He acquired this truck from the original owner and had it for another 15 years until illness forced the sale. The prior owner advertised this as “Very Complete & Original all the way down to the Windshield Washer Bag that hangs on the dashboard.”
