“I have three complete Koenig Model 330 steel full hard tops for sale. They all fit CJ2A’s. Normal wear and tear for 70+ yr old Jeep tops. Only rust through are minimal spots on a couple of the sections that bolt to the tub. Two exterior door handles missing. All interior window mechanisms complete and present. The black top has rare rear ambulance doors.
Buyer could piece together a fantastic top simply by mixing and matching panels from each top or with even a hint of metal working skill could easily restore all three tops and sell for a healthy profit.
Would like to sell all three as a package deal. Buyer must collect but can help with loading. Please note the tops are just tacked together and on uneven ground for display purposes only.
$1,200 cash. Price is firm. Located in Asheville, NC.”

Porter & Reed Hardtops

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Doug had a Porter & Reed Hardtop for sale a couple years ago. He took some great detail photos of it and it represents a classic example of the Full Econo-Body-Type “E” model, so I’ve included them all in case someone tries to restore one of these (I have higher res photos, too). For example, in Doug’s photos you can see the pull down sunshade and bracket on the driver’s side and just the bracket on the passenger side.

I’ve also included both brochures from the 10/1/1948 First Supplement of the Willys-Overland Special Equipment book (Besides full and half tops, Porter & Reed also manufactured bed extenders). (Learn additional info about the tops on the CJ-3B site)

The odd thing about Porter & Reed tops is that there were a multitude of variations, from no small side windows, to small side windows to larger side windows, or from a single back door window to dual back windows, and from rear doors that opened up vertically, to a couple that opened sideways, to a set of barn doors (custom)? There may have been a change in the doors as well, as a couple tops have angled bends at the lower front edge rather than the standard vertical bend where the body bends. What was factory and what was customized is likely lost to time ….

Some of these variations are evident in the Deluxe (Type “A”)  vs. Econo Body (Type “E”) full top models, but others are not. For example, the Deluxe model had a rear door that swung sideways, rectangular side windows with rounded corners, while the Econo model had a rear door that swung upwards and square side windows. Meanwhile, the deluxe half top (Half body — Type “B”) had a rear door that swung upwards, while the econo half top’s (Half Econo-Body–Type “H”) rear didn’t open at all.

You can see all the full and half top examples I have here: http://www.ewillys.com/?s=Porter+%26+Reed … I’ve also included a few at the end of this post.

Here’s the basic hardtop brochure:

Photos of early DJ-3A Hardtops with Side Glass

• CATEGORIES: Features, Fire/Police/Industry Vehicles, Library Collections, Old Images • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: 2 more photos of DJ-3A Hardtops with side glass (note also the use of the modified hardtop with glass on the Jeep Creep jeep above). The first is a different 1956 DJ-3A with the same type of hardtop (side windows and small rear window) was posted to Facebook.

So, does this mean Willys Motors had planned on selling DJ-3As with side windows, but for some reason changed its strategy? Or, did they only intend these tops for commercial/governmental use?

Caption: August 27, 1956. New Police Equipment: This new jeep, recently acquired by the City of Ann Arbor – Police Department, is being used to service parking meters throughout the city. The small vehicle has proven ideal for swinging into small spaces while meters are emptied. Patrolman John Biederman drives the jeep and is assisted in the meter collection by George Kaercher.

This second is undated, but shows a DJ-3A with a windowed hardtop for the Triangle Drive-in. It was posted to Facebook by Michael Canup.

===============

The photos of this RHD drive DJ-3A were posted by Andy to Facebook. They show a RHD DJ-3A at work for the Los Angeles School Police Department (that’s the department’s insignia on the door).

This is a 1956 RHD DJ-3A. It has the small rear window top that was halted sometime around late 1956 or early 1957 (http://www.ewillys.com/2020/03/17/different-version-of-the-koenig-manufactured-hardtop/), but also has the Hall tail lights which I am surprised to see on a 1956 (https://cj3b.info/Dating/Taillights.html). Oddly, it also has the rear side windows on the hardtop, which wasn’t common for the DJ-3As, but the side windows were standard for this model of the CJ-5 hardtop. So, this must have been a special order?

There was another photo taken with what appears to be the same jeep (same number on the door), but having a different driver (at least a different cap) named Officer Verne Schlotzhauer, while Captain Maurice W. Calfee watches the officer. The car to the right is different, also. This appeared in the July 24, 1956, issue of the Valley News, Van Nuys, California:

The top pic was also syndicated to newspapers. The image below appeared in the June 22, 1956, issue of the Des Moines Register:

Roplas Bodies and Hardtops for Mahindra Jeeps

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, Features, International • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

The brochures below show brochures from Roplas, a manufacturer out of India that produced Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic  (FRP) aftermarket bodies for 91″, 101″, and 104.5″ Mahindra jeeps. These brochures were assembled by Mr. Rahul Ram Amin and shared via the Flat Fender Jeepers Association — FFJA group on Facebook. I’m surprise that none of these bodies made it to the US, at least I’ve never seen them, especially in the Pacific Northwest where fiberglass bodies were readily used.

This fascinating brochure shows a range of special-purpose jeep bodies produced by Roplas, including service vans, police bodies, and ambulance models:

JeepKing Hardtops

Another interesting item in the 1957 Berg’s Truck and Parts Co (Aka the King of Jeeps) Catalog was this “Jeep King” hardtop advertisement, for both half and full-size tops. It looks like it’s a private branding of the Beck (or Kemco) Jeep Cabs, because the door has the split window. As far as I know, that wasn’t available on the Kelly hardtops manufactured by Kelly Manufacturing (which is the company Kemco became). Also, the Kemco had the small window on the half cab, as does the Jeepking half cab.
