“You are bidding on a very unique vehicle. I have done is much research as I could and will try to tell you everything I know about it. If you happen to know something that I missed, please feel free to contact me and let me know. I am in no way an expert on M151s and I am sure some of you reading this ad are. This vehicle was built by S.D. Baker Company out in West Texas in 1995. They were building vehicles to compete for military contracts during this time. The vehicles they were building where a combination of custom built parts and M151 parts.
I spoke with two of the people involved with this project back then. They built a single row version of this unit (there is only one known to still be around and it has won tons of awards and is in amazing shape). They also built a few dozen that had one row and was a 6X6 with dual rear axles. These are what the build tag on this one is from (note it says 6×6 when it is not). It appears the majority of these went to south america. They remember building a couple of these units with 2 rows and a rear seat. This one went to Monahans Sandhills State park in Monahans, Texas to be used by the park rangers and spent it’s entire life there.
The other one that they have record of went to the city of Abilene, Texas and was destroyed in the 90’s according to the person I talked to at the city. I have been unable to find any evidence of another one existing in over a year of looking. That being said, this unit was never used by the military in it’s current configuration. S.D. Baker did not win any of the contracts they were shooting for so the project died. These were not “home built” or kit vehicles at any time. AS STATED ABOVE; IT DOES HAVE A VALID TEXAS TITLE AND IS STREET LEGAL IN TEXAS. If you are looking for a unique and 1-of-a-kind addition to your fleet, this is it.
They painted it red for the park for some reason. I decided to leave it just as it is to sell it. There are some who will want to paint it green, some will want it desert camo and then some will want it coated with bedliner material. I figured I would let the new owner decide what they want to do with it. I did have new seat covers and inserts made for it. The old ones were dried out and hard as a rock. We also have done the following to it: new plugs, wires, coil, batteries, rebuilt transmission, new clutch, rebuilt starter, rebuilt fuel pump, rewired gauges, new taillights, new brake seals, new rubber boots, new windshield and more.
We sent the Zenith Carb out and had it refurbished and rebuilt. There are currently 265/70R15 tires on it. They used the bigger tire for better use in the sand that’s predominate in the park. That area is basically one big sand dune. You will see there is absolutely no rust on this unit beyond some very light surface rust on some exposed underneath pieces. There is NOTHING that is damaged by it. The overall length is 186 inches, the width is 73 inches and the wheelbase is 127 1/2 inches. This is still a 24 volt system. All the lights work as they should on it. It drives out very solidly for what it is. The transfer case shifts from 2wd to 4wd with no problems. This would make a great hunting vehicle as well as a very neat part of someone’s military fleet. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have.”
