A FC Roundup of my own — My First Ride in a Forward Control

As I mentioned a couple days ago, the FC Round up was this weekend in Arizona.  Well, I didn’t have time to make it down there.  But, that didn’t stop me from having a FC Round Up of my own.

A reader asked me to check out a Forward Control for sale about 45 minutes north of me.  I had some time today, so I drove out to meet with the seller, Daryl, who was awfully nice and very informative.

Well, it turns out Daryl didn’t just have 1 FC, he had 5:  2 FC-170s, an FC-170 DRW, an FC-170 with an expertly extended frame and aftermarket Dually setup, and an FC-150.  Daryl had a story about each one and pointed out some things I didn’t know.  Daryl and his son developed an interest in them a few years ago, brought them home, and hope to get working on them soon.

The nicest one, which Daryl has for sale, runs and drives, so he took me for a ride.  It was the first ride in an FC for me and, hopefully, not the last! We cruised up the road a bit, then cruised back. I had hoped to take a video, but the video on my phone stopped working (turns out it was operator error, but I didn’t figure that out until later).

He said he didn’t mind if I posted a few pictures, so here they are.  Thanks for a fun afternoon Daryl!

Here’s a shot of their collection:

Here’s an FC-170 that was used for years by a farmer to feed his cattle.  But he had a problem, how could he stand on the back of the FC and toss the hay off the back and drive at the same time?  His solution was his custom auto pilot contraption. He would get the Jeep going, attached his ‘auto pilot’ and then climb into the back and throw out hay as he drove along.

This FC-170 DRW has a racheting system to raise and lower the spare tire. I don’t remember ever coming across other FCs with that.  Unfortunately, it was hard to get a great shot of this.

1963 FC-150 Long Beach, Ca $1400

• CATEGORIES: FC150-FC170-M677 This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  Price dropped to $1400.  A reader took a look at this and gave the following report: There was no documentation on the Chevrolet drive train components. It supposedly has a rebuilt 350, with AT and has a GM rear end of some kind.  Front diff appears stock. Cab is decent outside. with some pinhole rust. Glass appears good except for drivers door.  Inside of cab is trashed.  No seats. No cover. No air cleaner on engine. Carb is full of dust, bugs and whatever, so it certainly does not appear that the engine has been taken care of.  Bed looks useable, with. some rust on flat panels but restorable.  Owner said he had a title, but he could not produce it the day I was there.

(05/25/2010) This is still a project.

UPDATE:  **SOLD** Was $10,000

This looks nice.

“FC-series trucks were produced through 1964, but never in large quantities, so that makes this baby a collectors item. More importantly it’s so FUN to drive!!! She looks great and runs even better!!!!!!!

The Jeep Forward Control (FC) is a truck that was produced by Willy’s and then Kaiser Jeep from 1956 to 1965. The design of the truck is also called a cab forward or better known as a cabover or COE for “cab over engine”.

This truck is easy to drive, feels safe and secure and the cab-forward design gives the driver great visibility and excellent maneuverability. They are very rare, very collectible vehicles……and this is a very rare opportunity……don’t miss out!!!”

I accidentally wandered across these unusual photos from the Timberlane’s thoughts blog.  I’ve never seen a Civil Defense FC. Maybe someone out there knows more about it?  I *think* this is in California, based on the front license plate.  I have lightened all four shots.  You can see the originals in the original post at the website.

1956 FC-150 Forestville, Ca eBay

• CATEGORIES: FC150-FC170-M677 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is rare alirght, buy I think it is the paint job that makes it so rare; don’t seem many rainbow FCs!

“This is a rare find. A Jeep FC 150 from the 50’s. I believe it’s a 56 but similar measurements with the 57 cause confusion. As you can see by the photos, it’s in need of a total restoration. For the age, the body is in pretty good shape. The drivers side has a dent. The windshield is cracked. The engine is there but as I said, it needs a mechanic. The bed is in tact. I saw one small hole but other then that,  it looks good. The color on the body appears to be original, multi-colored. I have seen other trucks like this one restored and they look really cool and different. There arn’t many of these around so who ever drives it around will get a lot of attention and questions!! If you are seriously interested, contact me with any questions and I’ll get right back to you.  If your in need of more pics, I can do that too.”
