Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. This is interesting because it is being sold by the Department of Corrections of Colorado.
“Ready to be restored, minimal rust, body solid. Vehicle runs, hard to start, any known mechanical problems are noted; if none are noted, none were identified when the vehicle was turned in. (10/04/2009) There’s a variety of minor issues with the dashboard, but it generally appears in good condition.

This looks pretty stock and still sports a 24 volt system. That’s pretty funny, as I was talking with Van today (he purchased one of my Champs) and he said that 24 volt M-38s were hard to find. True, I said, but I still find them … and voila …

Unusual paint job.
“solid jeep. flat four(60 hp) needs an alt and probably battery. new 31 in tires(less than 100 miles). new water pump and had the starter rebuilt about five years ago and have put less than 100 miles on it. has a broken header bolt that could be tapped out. wouldn’t hurt to have carb rebuilt built probably easier to replace engine with small v8 to provide more power the flat four is missing. don’t have time to play with it, so time to clean my garage. could be restored with alot of work, but more likely could be made into a crawler easier. this is not a work of art but has good componets: axles, tube, t-case and trans(3 speed), tires, frame, etc. have clear title. as is.”

(07/13/2010) It’s got a big hole in the rear, but still runs. It also looks to have a winch on the front?
“1951 M-38, Body is in very poor shape, but the engine runs great. NEW starter. have NEW oil filter. Tuned up recently. E-mail questions.”
This might make a good restoration project if the seller’s description is accurate.

Let’s see … we have an 1947 “authentic WWII” style M-38. Someone’s confused. That said, it looks pretty good.

(07/15/2010) This looks solid. I wonder if that really is a BW OD or a Warn OD.
“Original M38. New seats(front buckets and rear military style quick removable “clam shell style bench), tires, brakes. Runs great! starts right up and goes anywhere. Borg-warner O/D so it’ll cruise 60mph if you dare. It’s not a perfect museum piece yet, but high KBB is $17.5k for one like that.”

(03/20/2010) It’s got a Buick V-6 225, but otherwise appears pretty stock. It does have those m-151(?) rims that cause it to have a narrow track.
