It’s a 2WD drag jeep.
“1948 flat fender Willys low hood set up for the sand drags.. Built 350 with NOS (never used) ford 9 in rear with spool.. 35×20″ paddles.. I have two front axles for it. A two wheel drive axle out of a DJ and a stock Dana 27. It is a project. I bought it from my brother a year ago and now I have new plans. It’s been garage kept for the last 4 years.. It runs great and loud as hell. It needs the rear axle’s suspension set up,new radiator, and some seat brackets.. Like I said its a project but not a hard one.. I don’t need to sell it so don’t low ball me.”
My grandpa and Dad owned Lewton’s Jeep Sales and service from 1952 until 1989 when chrysler took over. My dad still has the shop and now does minor repairs and vintage jeep service work. The jeep I am restoring is my grandpas 1948 Willys race jeep. He raced this at Tri County 4 Wheelers, which he and 13 friends started in 1963 in Lisbon Ohio. I am now the proud owner of the jeep and trying to find the same rims and tires he used to run. 15×10 5 slot rims and Formula Desert Dog Tires 31×10.50 r 15. Luckily I still have the rims for the paddle tires but along the way I am not sure what happened to the aluminum rims. My dad tossed the Desert dogs about 10 years ago because they were falling apart.
I am looking for some Desert Dog tires and alumuinum rims. I am also looking for a 3a or 3b frame because of the many years of offroad racing the frame on the jeep has gotten week and stressed and I would much rather put another frame under it to make it safe if I decide to show or run the jeep again.
I am including a picture of my grandpa in his jeep from the early 90’s when he was still racing. Any help in searching for these parts would be greatly appreciated. I am lucky to finally add this Jeep to my Jeep collection here in Phoenix Az where I live now.

Just one post this morning. Ann was sitting in bed relaxing yesterday afternoon when she positioned her knee just right … or just wrong would be more accurate. It caused her knee cap to shift sideways. It happens once a year or so. She had to take a muscle relaxer to deal with the pain, so I spent last night taking care of her.
On the plus side, Marty Tilford and other racers from the Pacific Northwest Four Wheel Drive Association had a good time at the Tacoma Dome this past weekend competing in a series of barrel races. They lined up all their jeeps and took a photo for us. Yep, I am sure it was just for us!

This article from the May 1956 issue of Willys News reports on the 7th Annual Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, jeep race.
Here’s an official Jeep Jockeys souvenir program I found on ebay a couple years ago. I finally scanned it yesterday. Many of the photos didn’t print well, but it’s still an interesting booklet, especially for those like me that recognize some of the racers names. I was disappointed by all the ads, but I included them in the scans.
A little background information: the Yakima Jeep Jockeys of Yakima, Washington, formed a club in 1963. In 1965 they incorporated and joined the Pacific Northwest Four Wheel Drive Association. Beginning in 1971, the club held a series of Jeep Jockeys 4×4 Championship Races. They held them at leaf through 1977, but I do not know how much longer they were held after that year.
Exploration Northwest featured the 1977 race in one of their 1977 episodes. I was given permission to share two video clips from their episodes here.
You might remember Ron Day’s photos from a 1977 Yakima Race. It seems to be the same race that was featured in the souvenir program below.
