1951 CJ-3A Meridian, ID **SOLD**

FINAL UPDATE: I dropped by the auction today. It was plenty busy;  with no parking lot, cars filled the side of the road for along ways both directions. A large number of items were being auctioned, so I chose not to stay and wait the hours it was going to take to get to the jeep.  I never did receive any emails in response to the ones I sent about the jeep.

I spent some time looking closely at the jeep.  According to the title, the jeep had been located in Prineville, Oregon.  It appeared to have an older inline 6 cyl engine, maybe a Super Hurricane.  The round front cross-member was partly cut and flattened on top with the radiator moved forward and installed on top of it.  The engine compartment was wired with care. The floor panel looked so good, I think it might have been a replacement.  It used to have a heater (heater button on dash), but that was missing. The paint looked as good in person as it did in the pics.  The body is very straight.  Overall it appeared to be in excellent condition.

UPDATE 2: No responses to any of the emails I’ve sent so far. However, I just discovered the Korean War National Museum.  It’s a going to be a “a world-class museum to ensure that the historical significance of the Korean War is recognized by future generations”.  It’s set to open in 2009 in Springfield, Illinois.  They’ve got a great video at the Museum’s website.  So visit and learn more about what they are doing.  In the meantime, I’m awaiting a response from the Executive Director — Might as well start at the top 🙂

UPDATE:  As I mentioned in the comments attached to this post,  CHOSIN FEW is a group that supports those individuals who participated in the Battle of Chosin at Chosin Reservoir during the winter of Nov/Dec 1950.  The symbol on the hood is the logo of the group.  The 40 below and 70 miles to go apparently represents how cold it was and how far they had to go to escape the waves of Chinese.  You can read about one Chosin survivor here (the Chosin battle starts about halfway down the article).  I feel that this is such a special paint job that I’ve emailed a variety of Chosin contacts I’ve located on the web in the hopes that someone who understands the meaning of it will purchase it.

This appears to be a very nicely restored CJ-3A that’s being auctioned as part of an estate sale/bankruptcy.  There is no description, but it appears that the restoration is close to stock.  I can’t tell what type of engine is in it.  Though not a stock paint job, it looks very good, smooth and glossy.

You can view all the pics at the bottom of this page:  http://www.corbettauctions.com/auctions/08/1206.shtml

What kind of top is that?  If the body is in reasonable condition, not a bad price for a running GPW.

1952 was the first year for the M-38a1.  I can’t remember seeing a top quite like this on an M-38a1.  If you can scrape all the paint off, this may be very restorable.

1955 M-38a1 Bonney Lake, WA **SOLD**

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1800

Not a bad price for a non-rusty, full cage, buick v6, running jeep.  Might even get it for less. Given the rope that ties the gear shift to the dashboard, I’d say project number one would be fixing the tranny from popping out of gear getting a nicer piece of rope to hold the 2wd in place 🙂

“1955 Willys CJ5 Jeep, 225 Buick V6 3 speed, 5.38 gears. Welded rear end, BesTop soft top, YJ buckets and rear seat. Swampers with 50% tread. No rust, very solid tub. Full cage”

South Webster High School “Jeeps”

• CATEGORIES: Features, News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Who woulda thunk it?  It turns out South Webster High School in Ohio adopted the Jeep mascot more than 50 years go.  Though it’s not jeep the vehicle, rather it’s Jeep from Popeye, it’s still cool in my book.

“Before 1940, South Webster High School athletic teams had no official name, although local sportswriters sometimes referred to them as the “midgets.

However, in 1940 the rules of basketball, by accident, helped to produce the mighty JEEP. By the rule in 1940, coaches were not permitted on the playing floor to instruct players. Coaching had to be done prior to the start of the game or at half-time. During rest periods between the first and third quarters of play the team manager at South Webster would roll a small box onto the court to supply players with refreshments and first-aid materials. However, the coach at South Webster was accused (and rightly so perhaps) of sending in plays and instructive notes in this little four-wheeled box. Local fans were positive that when that little box was sent onto the floor, players were getting more than refreshments. Everyone knew that the box contained answers to the problems being presented by the opposing team.

Also in 1940, a favorite comic strip contained a character who knew everything. In 1936, the charater of “Eugene the Jeep,” a small bright-eyed creature from Africa who was all-knowing, was introduced into the “Popeye” comic strip. Popeye gave the Jeep to his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, as a birthday gift. The Jeep, whose diet consisted of orchids, helped popeye solve many difficult situations in his comic strip career.

Since the JEEP was all-knowing, some local South Webster people associated the coach’s box, containing messages to his players, with the comic strip character.

According to, what is now legend, the late Mayor of South Webster, Mr. Gilbert Havener, is credited as the first person to label the box as the “JEEP BOX.” The sports editor of The Portsmouth Times (now Daily Times), Lynn Wittenberg, picked up the term and used it in describing South Webster’s 1940 Scioto Country Tournament team.

The mascot was never officially adopted, but has been, since 1940, generally accepted….”
