I believe one reason Ford did not win the initial jeep contract was the army felt the Ford tractor engine did not provide enough power. Ford installed that engine in the vehicles they submitted because that was the only small 4 cylinder engine they were producing in 1940.
I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong…
