Jeep Rustling by the Navy

This article shares some of the jeep rustling that went on during WWII. One of protections against rustling that I’ve encountered is that driver’s would grab the rotor from the distributor to keep other military folks from stealing their jeeps.

Note that the ice cream story from yesterday has expanded to five gallons!

    Hot jeeps continued even in Vietnam – we had a “unofficially procured” M151 in our unit (A co 46th Eng). Whenever there was to be an inspection, which wasn’t often, it had to be out of the motor pool on the road. It was my job one time to take it and just drive around for most of a day.

    Ok I am not a expert mechanic, but do have some experience fixing cars while going though school, So would there not be just a slight RUST problem with the jeep being under salt water, The wiring must have taken a real hit. And I thought things rusted fast here in WI.

    Also after several months what did the Chief tell the officers when they finally noticed the jeep on top of the sub. New weapon? new type sonar? off set weight ?

    And the rules for off book procurement required that the stolen jeep be returned to the same area where the it was when the jeep was procurement was made, I wonder if they would have wanted it back?

    Dave, in regards to mititary jeep drivers during WW2 taking the rotors with them after parking their jeeps, I read once that it was such common knowledge that guys looking for jeeps would carry rotors with them.

    I figured everyone would enjoy these stories. Who knows how true they are, but still fun to share. Steve, that would certainly make sense!
