Paul Barry shared these images of an early CJ-2A for sale from last week. The VIN and the body number are nearly 10,000#s apart (VIN is 38xxx, body 28xxx), which made me wonder if this was originally two different jeeps.
Data tags look like repros…stamping is not right either
I read somewhere (cj-2a page?) that the VEC CJ2A tubs were still being made by ACM in Connersville Indiana and shipped to Toledo. They came with a body tag that was about 10,000 lower than the serial number (on the patent tag) of the Jeep itself. Could that be the reason?
I had read that also, but the two tags on this Jeep are reproductions and the stamping is not correct either. The stampings on the top tag should all have the same font and the numbers on the bottom tag are misaligned. We know that the frame stampings on DJ3A Jeeps had only the sequential production number stamped and that each number was stamped individually, not in a gang.

Mike: This link of Serial numbers (VIN/Engine/Body/etc .. http://www.cj-2a.com/parts_list/cj2a_data.php) suggests the body tag was very close. It’s the ACM number that was off. That has to do with the ACM numbers starting at 1xx while the VIN and body tags and serial numbers started at 10xxx.

Odds are the owner didn’t know that the “body” tag number should match the vehicle serial number at this point in time, so stamped the body tag w/the ACM number – the difference is right on.
