As a retired cop, I find these fascinating. At first glance, I thought the 2A was equipped with a tear gas gun, but I believe it’s a high pressure fire hose with the trailer in the back, a reservoir. OR, tear gas dispensed in volume when mixed with water – thus the small tank over large one on the trailer. Wonder who bought all that at the city auction.
Also, cars in photo with 2A date that one to the early to mid 60s.

Like Barney Goodwin, as a retired cop, I think the CJ2A was originally set up as a fire Jeep and later set up with a high pressure water (cannon)hose and reservoir tank trailer. The loudspeaker for giving announcements, the chain link protection for the driver. Excellent setup for working unruly crowds. At the risk of ticking some folks off, Portland and Seattle could have been using this for the past several months.
Just before my dad shipped over to England in 1943, his military police unit was tasked with clearing strikers at the docks and they used Jeeps equipped with water cannon apparatus. Apparently, it worked well and no serious harm done to the strikers..
What made me think it included tear gas was how wide the opening of the “cannon” barrel was which was more conducive to projecting a gas fog. That wide of a barrel would empty a small water tank right away unless t here was a restrictor inside that barrel we can’t see. I do agree the apparatus is a fire jeep modified. and the Police Dept could very well have ordered it sans hoses and ladders etc.
