Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. A reader named Mike asked me to post this.
“I have a completely rebuilt a CJ-2A starter. It has a new bendix. The guts have all been cleaned and turned. The bushings and brushes have been cleaned. I even have the new bushing that goes in the bellhousing. Its a 6 volt starter. It came out of a 1947 CJ-2A. I put a 12 volt starter in and so do not need it anymore. I invested 150 dollars, so want to get 100 dollars for it. It’s in excellent condition.”
I’m thinking the rolling chassis on the right is a CJ-2A? I’m less sure of the jeep on the left is a VEC or a mix & match.

UPDATE: Price dropped to $1900 without the Hardtop or $2200 with it. The seller has included the serial number, in the previous AD — #36930. The engine is seized, but it includes an extra engine.
“I am reposting my CJ2A to see if by chance if there is anyone interested. It is a complete all orignall 46 CJ2A with a hard top. I will sell the 2A less the hard top as I have a buyer for the hard top, but will not let the hard top go until the 2A has a home. The brand on the hard top is Carson Car Craft (built in Oklahoma City). I have an extra engine as the engine in the 2A is locked up. The extra engine is not locked and is rebuildable. I also have all 5 orignal wheels that will also go with the 2A. I have a extra pair of front fenders as part of the deal. I had been asking $2500.00 for the 2A with the hard top, but at this point I would take $2200.00 for the 2A with the hard top or just the 2A less the hard top for $1900.00!! “Selling my willy’s Jeep – GREAT HUNTING RIG! Tow bar mounted to new front bumper assembly. Very good condition, would not take much to finish a complete restoration. Have clean title on hand. New upholstery and very clean throughout. This jeep has 90% of its original parts, original engine converted to 12 volt. Runs good, smokes a little. All running gear works good, the T-90 transmission DOES NOT slip out of second gear which is common for these jeeps. Very little rust for its age. Steps still will hold weight. No holes in floor boards. Great jeep to drive now or to continue to restore. All lights work including dash lights. INCLUDED: another full complete engine and another long-block to use as a core as well, 2 extra fenders, 1 extra hood, another windshield assembly and 4 more tires/rims.”
“46 CJ-2A Flatfender Jeep. Body is solid with a few dings and dents does have scratches from the trails, motor is solid and was rebuilt a few years ago and is set-up on propane. Transmission is a ford T18 4 speed 6.32 first gear matted to a T18 transfer case. Axles are original units locked in the front welded in the rear front has disc brakes rear are drum, it also has power sterring. Wheels and tires are 34×10.5-15 Swamper LTB’s and in good shape mounted on aluminum wheels. Suspension is YJ springs shackle reversale on front rear standard. Winch is a Warn 8274 and works good with good cable. Seats are descent and four point harness attached to cage, I have had this jeep for around 15 yrs, and it is a cool trail machine don’t let the size fool you she will hang with the best of them on any trail. I have alot of spare parts that will go with it motors axles and trannies and other stuff. “What we have here is a 1946 willys with a 305 engine in it .. it has dana 44 rear with 488 gears, detroit locker dana 27 488 in front. new suspension shocks and stabelizers. 305 has wiend stealth intake with new edelbrock 600, engine has a sig erson mild cam with headers. The trans and transfer case are Dana t 90 steering is Jeep 1946. Also it has 33×12.50 tires on it .. Its been painted white with purple a few years back so showing some wear but good hunting wagon or just good transportation .. “almost complete set of jeep willys parts. I believe all its missing is the radiator. 2 engines an original jeep willys flathead, and a jeep willys f134 hurricane engine. both need work. bought gauges from a junked out jeep willys to replace the ruined originals. jeep has the a frame tow bar. leather seats purchased from the same place as the gauges. i got the jeep from family and it doesn’t have a title. sat for nearly 20 years and needs extensive work. i need it out of my garage. “

This sounds like someone who bought this jeep, painted it green, made sure it was mechanically ok, and is selling it.
“Title: Clear Engine: 4 Cylinder Exterior color:Green Transmission:Manual Fuel type:Gasoline Interior color:Green Options 4-Wheel drive Steering checked out, new master cylinder, brakes were adjusted and check out with no problems. Strong engine with good oil pressure, cold natured, so it needs choking until warmed up, but when warm, just bump starter and she fires right up, after 500 mile trailer ride there was only one small oil spot underneath it, it’s what we call “marks it territory very little”, shifts smooth, does NOT jump out of second gear, 4 wheel drive works great, has 5 new 7:00 X 16″ NTD (means non-directional tread, pulls just as good in reverse as forward ) 6 ply tires and tubes on original 16″ CJ rims, has WWII style fender blackout with NOS 6 volt blub (has voltage reducer) …”
