Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. This looks like a good project.
“1946 Willys Jeep Early model column shift. Barn find has 8K and change on engine and chassis. Last run in 1960. Body was removed and sand blasted very minimals rust. Some small dents and dings also some hole drilled for top which I welded shut. Tires are brand new Firestone military reproductions with zero miles. Engine had low compression on two cylinders and is pulled and on a stand awaiting freshening up. Gas tank has a pin hole and will need replacement. All original starter and generator as well as original air cleaner. Frame was pressure washed and painted with black tractor enamel. One new rim and both front and rear bumpers are new reproductions. Has an amatuer paint job. All i all a good candidate for resto or freshen up the motor and use as I was going to, just for dinkin around the lake. Am selling before completion as I have to many projects and less money to do them than I used to. Trying to pare down to one so I got a chance at completion. Will help with shipping any way I can. Also has the ND antique plate 46JEEP”

“1948 Willys CJ2A – $2250 (OBO Elk River). Ready for Restoration. Appears mostly original, front bumper was replaced with stronger unit, it was once used as a plow jeep. Has aluminum roof unit, dual underdash heaters, very nice treads on the tires. We bought this two years ago, it has been sitting in our garage, we’re moving and hope it finds a good home. It ran when put away, motor turns fine. More photos available upon request.”

“1949 willys jeep .Great project jeep. we have complete v6 with all the adapters to adapt to sm420 4 speed and the adapter to t18 transfer case. It has original 4 cylinder now ,needs head work to run. call for details. $2850.00”

This appears to run on propane.
“Rust free body with dimond plate accents. Newer tires, Rancho shocks, front towbar, Fresh GM 350, T90, D18, Aluminum radiator, New impaco Propane setup with xtra propane tanks, Power brakes, Stearing conversion and boxed frame. Lap harness wind jamer top. Jeep needs exhaust and blead the brakes to drive on the road. Come hear it run and drive it $3500 OBO.”
A reader named Andy contacted me the other day about a flatfender that he purchased. He was told it was a former airport Jeep. Anyone recognize some of these mods? How about them rims!
Andy writes, “No data tags inside the body, but need to check the firewall tomorrow. The guy I bought the jeep from says that he saw another one with the same wheels on it at the hunting camp where he got this jeep …. There is some use of aluminum in this body, goes hand in hand with the airport shop mod theory …. It appears that the patches in the floors and sides were not really needed at the time they were done.. the body was still very sound in those areas. Looking in the wheel wells, you can see the original not rusted body covered by a layer of metal from the top. I think you may be right on the combination of manuf. top with some airport shop ‘extras’. Those doors sure are unique, I have not seen such before ..”
I found this image on the web at a fake webpage (on of those pages that aggregates a bunch of misc stuff in hopes of getting click throughs). It looks like a pretty cool build. Anyone ever seen it or know any history?

(11/19/2010) The seller notes there is no rust anywhere, but that sure looks like surface rust on the hood? Also, it sounds like it doesn’t run given it needs a new water pump? This looks solid.
“THIS IS A TRUE BARN FIND… THIS WILLYS HAS BEEN IN A BARN FOR OVER 14 YEARS !!! YOU WILL NOT FIND A STRAIGHTER OF MORE COMPLETE WILLYS AROUND !! THERE IS NO RUST ON THE JEEP…AND THE METAL IS ALL STRAIGHT. THE SEATS ARE IN PERFECT SHAPE. I TRAILERED THIS JEEP HOME AND GOT IT RUNNING, I HAVE THE NEW FUEL TANK AND WATER PUMP IT NEEDS. I ALSO HAD THE WHEELS SANDBLASTED AND POWDER COATED BLACK AND PUT 5 NEW TIRES ON HER. THE TOP IS IN FAIR SHAPE… BUT… UNDER THE BACK SEAT WAS A BRAND NEW, NEVER OUT OF THE PACKAGE BIKINI TOP FOR THE JEEP!!! THIS HAS MANY OF THE PLUS’S YOU WANT TO FIND BUT CAN’T… BOW HOLDERS, JERRY CANS AND THE BRACKETS, SIDE STEPS AND SPARE TIRE CARRIER”
This is listed as a 3A, but the serial number of 211105 suggests a late 2A. This has a variety of mods, including a cool-air intake.
“This particular ’48 CJ3A has had thousands of dollars invested in it to make it what you see today. This jeep has been assembled and maintained by a master mechanic that is certified under 9 different automotive brands. He has used only the best parts while assembling this off road machine and has spent thousands of dollars doing so. Included with the Jeep is a 1965 M416 military trailer. This is an authentic military trailer but has had a tailgate cut into it. It wears the same, matching wheels and tires as the jeep that pulls it….”
