Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. I wasn’t aware of the “Safari Edition” of the CJ-5.
“56 4×4 standard shift 3 sticks 4cyl ran when parked. rare safari edition.”
Not perfect, but looks solid.
“I have for sale a 1956 CJ5 jeep willys, it has been painted and partially restored by an individual. Has been converted from 6 volt system to 12 volt, has newer bikini top. The 4 wheel drive works, so it could be converted into a rock crawler. It is road ready, but does need brake work and lighing work. The tires are in fair condition. The interior DOES NOT have the original seats. The frame is solid with no rust. Transmission shifts fine and runs great. It is a 3 speed with reverse maual transmission. Has original ignition in it. This jeep is located in Greenup Kentucky. Please email any questions. The mileage is 120,000, it has a clear title.”

This includes a rear PTO. Looks like a good price despite needing a little work.
“1962 Willys Jeep. Easily restoreable . No visible rust, runs well, original 4 cyl engine, few owners, titled. Has full windshield frame. Good seats & interior. Needs brakes. Worn tires & PTO needs work and crack in windshield glass. But it’s in fine shape for an antique! Must see!”

(09/27/2012) I kind of like this purpose built jeep.
“This is a 56 willys cj5 that was used to work on oil field pipelines. the old jeep has a heavy steel bed and a war surplus braden winch that works and is worth good money to someone restoring a military vehicle. tires are good. the engine runs perfect. i put a new master cylinder on it. i had planned to use it at the deer lease as a work rig but never got around to it. has brand new gas tank also that has not been installed. asking 1950.00 cash.”
