Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Dexter is pretty excited about this find! No bad mods, though there appear to be a few things that need to be changed to make it closer to original. “Need to sell this project to help pay for another. No motor, trans, or transfer case, but you wouldn’t use the stock ones anyways. This does have a full soft top that is in good condition. Saginaw power steering, has been totally rewired and all the guages worked before the motor blew up. Bucket seats with a rear seat that has a built in tool box. Bobcat fiberglass hood for extra carb room. Rancho 5000 shocks, stock axles. Washington title with collector plate. Ready to build into whatever you want it to be. Can deliver if in the area”

I was looking up something for a reader when I stumbled upon these two webpages. One page documents some of the differences between very early MBs and later ones. “1942 Willys Jeep. It was bought as a project car and I have put many hours into it. It is getting very close to being done but I know longer have the time and more so I am moving to Nevada this weekend and I can’t take it with me. A reader named Bob was vacationing in Thailand when he spotted this pair of nicely restored MBs (one is a slat grille). An intrepid reporter, Bob captured the jeeps on video (download the video here — 11MB) which shows closeups of both jeeps and with a still image (seen below). He also talked briefly with the owner, Pete, who has two blotspot websites devoted to his Jeeps (the 1941 slat grille MB & the 1944 MB & Video of both Jeeps by Pete). Thanks for sharing Bob!
Bob filed this report, “I just came across these MB’s on the side of the road, as I was touring the island on a motorbike. I’m sorry I don’t have much info about Pete. I met him in the small bar across the street ( see in video with balloons across the front ) and we talked a little about the Jeeps. Pete emigrated to Thailand from the UK. He’s a really nice guy with a Thai wife and some kids. He claims you cannot import any of these Jeeps to Thailand anymore. I’m not sure if it is because of the Left Hand Drive or not. He said they are very valuable there too – worth over 1,000,000 Baht each ($31000 USD).”
Brett found this crazy setup. This appears to have an overdrive. This is a parts vehicle at this point.
“MY DAD HAD THIS OLD WILLYS SITTING AROUND FOR 40 YEARS WAS GOING TO BUILD A KILLER ROCK CRAWLER OUT OF IT HAS BUICK ALUMINUM V8 RAN WHEN IT WAS PARKED. FRONT AXLE DANA 44 SHORTENED 2 3/4 INCHES REAR AXLE IS GM 12 BOLT BOTTOM HAS BEEN SHAVED ON BOTH, ALSO HAS WARN OVERDRIVE IN IT. AXLES ARE JUST SITTING IN IT TEMP. HAVE FABRICATED 4 LINK AND ALL FOUR COIL SPRINGS, NEEDS SPRING CUPS FABRICATED BUT HAVE PIECES TO START. THIS IS A RARE VEHICLE IT IS MILITARY ISSUE. 1942 WILLY’S MODEL M.B. NO TAILGATE. SON IS GOING TO COLLEGE NEED MONEY!!!”

(06/03/2010) This generally looks sound, though modified in places.
“Vehicle in good running order; Stock, straight 4 cylinder motor, 134 CIN; Motor strong, no knocks or oil leaks; Updated 12 volt electrical system; Recent transmission overhaul. Clean, with new paint, but rough body work on driver side; Rust free frame, recent front end work and shocks; Removable hardtop & rollbar; Tow bar; Removable rear bench seat. Stock spare tire (16.0 x 6 inches), rear mount; Drives well, but wanders at speeds over 35 MPH. New tires should fix this; Ready to return to stock condition or to modernize. Manuals and parts list included; Stored in garage.”
