“Built in August of 1942 this is an early war Jeep that saw it all, rolling off the assembly line the week we invaded Guadalcanal and months before we landed in North Africa.

I am going to say it needs total restoration as I don’t want to nit pick with a bunch of tire kickers – though others would call it parade ready. It is a good solid Jeep that has minimal rust with solid metal in the floor (one spot under passenger seat. Some rust in hat channels and tool indents though the gas tank well is solid.

Engine looks like it has a civilian Willys head on a pre-war Go-Devil engine.

I put 5 new tires and tubes on it recently. I also added the top bows and while all the hardware is great, I am not happy with the quality of the bows. Still, they come with the Jeep. I also put the original WW2 front hubs back on it and got rid of the postwar lock-out hubs you see in some of the pictures. I have the front seat back pad I just took it off temporarily to accommodate my “front pad” if you know what I mean. Also, replaced windshield rubber and added wipers recently.

Pictures in the ad go from more to less recent. It does have a heavy front bumper with a tow bar that comes with it. Bumper gussets are present and intact though one has a crack. Front serial number plate is still present on the front frame member. It runs, drives and stops fine and 4WD and Hi-Lo work as they should. As I said this is a solid restoration candidate and a way to help a worthy cause at the same time.

I am aware that the price may be considered relatively high-ish but I am not overly interested in selling it other than as a means to help a charitable cause”

“1942 Willy’s MB modified for off-roading. Lots of aftermarket and swapped parts added on, a ton of fun even just to drive on the street. The motor is a Ford 289 (might be a High Output but not sure) from a 60s Mustang with a mild cam, mated to a 4 speed T18 trans. Dana 44 in the rear, Dana 20 up front with a Dana 18 transfer case. It is running on open headers at the moment, but I have the mufflers if you want them. The car sat for a handful of years, but I have completed a lot of maintenance work and she runs and drives very strong:

UPDATE: Still Available.

(03/31/2021) It’s a project.

https://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/d/redlands-1944-willys-mb-for-sale/7297022833.html

“1944 Willys MB project jeep. Some new parts such as brake lines(not installed), tires, leaf springs, shocks, bushings and gas tank. Has Buick V6 mounted up. Engine needs rebuild from water sitting in the cylinders. Transmission, transfer case, axles and brakes all there. Tub is rough and needs metal patches but it is definitely salvageable. Overall good project for someone looking for a vintage jeep. No title. Bill of sale only. $1800 obo must pick up. Will not deliver.”

Published March 28, 2021: Here’s another, earlier jeep photo, including a dedication by Charles Payne, related to Senator Claude Pepper in a Bantam BRC-40. According to the Florida State University Digital Archives, Senator Robert Reynolds is driving the jeep, Senator Claude Pepper is in the passenger seat, and Charles Payne and Harold Crist are seated in the back. The photo is dated May 1941.

Also, according to a June 02, 1968, column by Larry King in the Miami Herald, there was a video taken of Senator Pepper riding up the steps and it was to be shown on TV on June 30, 1968. I was unable to find the video on the internet.

===================

ORIGINALLY POSTED DECEMBER 09, 2012: This pictures tells the tale of Senator Claude Pepper‘s bid for re-election as a Senator from Florida in the 1950 race.  Like his jeep, Senator Pepper’s campaign crashed that year as well.

PHOTO CREDIT: State Archives of Florida, Florida Memory, http://floridamemory.com/items/show/36090 CAPTION: Addressed to George Smathers from his friend Carl L. Hahn, an accompanying note says, “Here’s what is left of the Pepper machine in Palm Beach County – Souvenir of your successful 1950 campaign.”

The accident led to a lawsuit against the driver and Senator Claude Pepper. The appeared in the August 04, 1950, issue of the Palm Beach Post:
