Day 11- Wed. May 9th: Exploring the Palmetto State

<– Day 10 – Tues. May 8: Laurel, Hardy & Wood Cars | Day 12 – Thurs. May 10th: Willys to Hawgs –>

Day 11: Our drive was short on Wednesday, going from Charleston to Aiken.

2018-05-09-charleston-aiken-map

Wednesday’s drive from Charleston to Aiken.

On Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, we spent time driving around Charleston. Ann did some research and discovered that Charleston was ranked the number one destination in the US and World in 2016 and has been a top destination for most of the decade in the US. By the wide range of languages spoken at our Holiday Express, I believe it!

Ann also explained that South Carolina is nicknamed the Palmetto State, after the trees. You’ll find Palmettos and half crescents of various designs on t-shirts and other objects for sale around the state. You can learn more about the palmetto and crescent here.

Charleston is a lovely city, very walkable, with plenty of shops, restaurants, sights, and things to do. The architecture feels old world and the roads are skinny, with some cobblestone, brick, and modern pavement in various sections of old town. We agreed that we could see ourselves returning at some point and spending more time here.

We were a about 2 miles(?) away from Charleston’s Downtown Market.

We only had time to explore one attraction in depth and that was the downtown market, a four block long daily (and sometimes nightly) market. It has both permanent and temporary shops. Parking was easy (right next to the market), even at the market’s 9:30am opening. By that time, tourists, and possibly locals, were milling about, tasting some of the local mini-biscuits (I can recommend them), and exploring the vendors.

Eastern end of the market.

These two shots show the permanent shops.

“Well folks, the time has come, gonna let go of one of my toys. I just ain’t got the time no more, hasn’t been used in two years or more. It is a 1948 Willy’s Jeep. It is a CJ-2 so don’t let the paint job fool ya, although there are only cosmetic differences between the CJ (civilian market) and the MB (military market), it is not actually a military Jeep. Though the original in-line 4 cylinder “Go Devil” motor and running gears are all basically the same as the military version. It don’t go fast (top end of about 52 mph) but it goes like a goat in the rough stuff. These pictures are to let ya see what it is. It is not a museum piece, it does have some rusty spots that could be dressed up.

This is a real nice useable toy that I had a blast with. It is a licensable vehicle, which means you can run up and down fire trails or forestry roads without worrying about Mr. Forestry man raising hell, or taking your ride like a four wheeler or Razor. This jeep also comes with a Roll Bar, a 10,000 lb electric winch that is set up to work from the front or back while operated from the divers seat, a tow bar (very easy to tow) so you can get it to your favorite riding location faster than driving it there. And 2 manuals 1) Repair & 1) Master Parts List. In hand title, so first $5,200.00 takes it home. Or make me a reasonable offer, but please don’t waste either of our times by trying to low ball it. Come get a real piece of Americana”

It has a lot of new parts and a fresh paint job. This is not over restored where you would be scared to drive it, it is a driver that you could take to a car show or put it to work on a farm. Please contact me if you have any questions or want to see it. I can deliver to you within 500 miles for a small fee if that is something you need. Clean Nevada title in hand.
