Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Here’s a kid’s book called Willy: The Little Jeep Who Wanted to Be a Fire Truck. I haven’t read it yet, but it’s supposed to be based loosely on a real event and a real 1947 CJ-2A. The book has its own website.

Here’s a highly modded flattie.
“1948 4X4 Willys Jeep, 283 Chevy engine, 4 speed transmission, front disc brakes, air compressor, back seat, 8000 lb winch on front, 33″ swamper tires that go great in the sand, dana locker rear end. This jeep has been in the woods and the beach. It goes anywhere you take it. Asking $3400 obo.”
After seeing this ad multiple times, it got to me. The seller claims in each ad that the photo below was taken during the Prohibition era.
I mean, c’mon, how difficult is it to look up Prohibition (1919 -1933) and look up when jeeps were built (nothing before 1940). I mean, am I asking so much?
Now here’s a more complete version of the picture. Note the jeep is atop wood slats which are atop beer bottles.

UPDATE: The seller has dropped the price to $2000 and is throwing in a beat up 1952 M-38. I’d say this is a good price.
(12/27/09) The seller notes that this would not make a good original restoration projection.
“I have a 1952 M38 for sale along with a 1955 M170. The M38 is still 24 volt and would make a great restoration project, it does not run. The M170 has been converted to 12 volt and has aftermarket seat frames, it would also make a great project. The M170 was a military ambulance when it was in service. Both are classic vehicles and would be great for trail jeeps or collectibles. I priced them together and cheap because i need to get rid of both of them. “I hate, hate, hate that I have to sell this Jeep. I purchased in the early 2000’s and have 293 recorded man hours into the restoration. I have a full photo album of pictures from the very early stages through completion. However, none are online. I have taken a few pictures of the pictures with my camera phone.
Too much detail to go into regarding the restoration, but I do have a printout of everything that went into it. It runs well and is started weekly to keep everything in working order. T-90 Transmission and Transfer Case Model 18. Engine: #J45856. This restoration is one of the nicest that I’ve ever seen. This jeep is a great collectible and a piece of American history. Please feel free to ask questions, I’ll do my best to answer. $15,000.00 OBO… Make an offer!”

“1960 willys cj5 jeep. Runs and drives good. It has a fiberglass body with original drive train. It is a 4 cylinder f- head with a 3 speed transmission. Twin stick 4wd with locking hubs. Many new parts including Brakes, tires, windshield, paint, seats, steering wheel and wiring harness. Needs very little to finish. Like mirrors, e brake and the horn has to be hooked up. I have the mirrors and horn, just haven’t had any time. A lot of time and money have been spent, but it has to go.”
