Preproduction Civilian Jeeps — A Great Book!

• CATEGORIES: Books, Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

After reading the book review about “Preproduction Civilian Jeeps” from Jim Allen on Derek Redmond’s CJ-3B site (scroll to mid-page), I decided to purchase the book.  While I’m hesitant about purchasing jeep books, due to the fact that the images are often reprints of images I’ve already seen or that the text isn’t all that informative, Jim’s review intrigued me enough to spur me to action.

Thankfully, I was extremely happy with the book I received.  Frederic Coldwell’s Preproduction Civilian Jeeps manages to avoid the traps I mention above, producing a text that’s rich in information, details and images that are both unique and investigative.   In fact, the book is down right humbling.  I thought I knew jeeps pretty well, but reading this book taught me what I didn’t know about what I didn’t know.

Though each chapter is full of information, I think my favorite chapter was the final one, where Fred reveals how photographs have been altered by marketing staffs during the 40s so that the jeep that’s pictured in the photograph looks more like the Willys being sold to the public.   In some ways it’s a test; by the final chapter, has the reader learned enough to tell what the marketing department did to change the original images and why they did it?

I’m thinking I will paint in white ‘X2008’ on the rear bumper.  Read the book to learn why 🙂

1956 CJ-3B Charlotte, NC **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $6500.

The windshield looks a little unusual on this CJ-3B.  It appears to be well maintained.

“This is a 1956 jeep willys cj3b, it has a F-head 134 engine, T90 tansmission(3spd, 4wd works like a champ, superwinch hubs. dana44 rear axle, exterior recently painted and has a bedliner coating in the back as well as the front of the interior of the tub…. Its missing two guages and needs a little bit of wiring but its a nice jeep for someone to tinker with but it is a blast to drive, the serial number is 32720 and in doing some research I found out that this jeep came from the west coast which explains why it has very minimal rust.”

I don’t see any obvious issues with this CJ-5.  This appears to be a great price.  Minor note: the year in the title of the Ad differs from the year in the description.

CJ-3B Roll Cage Redmond, Wa $600

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3B This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This is a nice rollcage.  The seller suggests it could be used on other flatfenders, but the bends in the front near the dash would look a little odd for low hood flatties.

“For sale roll cage only. fits cj3b high hood, powder coated, with full sand pad on the top. plenty strong. may fit other flat fenders? 600.00 obo”

New: A Collection of eBay results for 1/4 ton flat fenders …

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Last month I happened upon the fcConnection ebay auction results.  I thought that was a great idea, so I thought I’d add something similar.  It took me a while to get around to building it, but here it is http://www.ewillys.com/?page_id=2480. The main menu above now contains an “ebay results” link as well.

My goal is to develop a database of prices just to see what kind of prices sellers are getting on ebay, which are stats I haven’t followed much.  I will be focusing on the 1/4 ton flat fenders (Models: MB, GPW, CJ-2, CJ-2A, CJ-3A, M-38, CJ-3B, DJ-3A).

To get my information, I’m using the eBay watch system to keep tabs on flat fender auctions.  When an auction concludes, I’ll post it.

This is a stock looking CJ-2A in great shape.

I am selling this Jeep for my 80 year old father. No one drives it any more so it needs to go to a new home. I would consider this in good condition, runs and drives nice. Two owners since new. 55,452 miles and all original except the chrome wheels are off a IH Scout and are a little rusty. Also a little rust under the cluch pedal. Motor overhauled less than 100 miles ago.”

1942 MB Holden, Mo eBay

• CATEGORIES: GPW (Ford MB), MB This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

This MB looks like a play jeep.  It does not appear to be licensed.  I wonder if the stock axles were upgraded.  I’d think that power and those tires would be hard on stock MB axles.

“I’VE OWNED LOTS OF JEEPS IN THE PAST, BUT THIS ONE IS MY FAVORITE IN THE PAST I’VE TURNED DOWN NUMEROUS OFFERS TO SELL IT BUT COULD NOT PART WITH IT. WILLY HAS A 283 CHEVY V-8 RUNS SMOOTH, QUIET,AND COOL. IT HAS HEADERS AND GLASS PACKS AND SOUNDS LIKE A V-8 SHOULD. IT HAS A 350 TURBO TRANSMISSION WHICH HAS BEEN REBUILT AND IS A STOCK TRANNY. THE REST OF THE DRIVE TRAIN IS STOCK I THINK? WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE 4X4 LOCK OUT HUBS. FOR ADDED DRIVE ABILITY I’VE ADDED A STEERING BOX WITH A GM POWER STEERING PUMP WHICH MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN MANEUVERING THE 31 X15 GOODYEAR TERRA TIRES ON 14 INCH WIDE STEEL RIMS.”
