1962 National Geographic Trip in Canyonlands

• CATEGORIES: Features, Magazine, Old Images Jeeping • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

For five days in July of 1961, then-Interior Secretary Stewart Udall, Canyonland-legend Kent Frost, and a posse of government folks toured the Caynyonlands area by jeep, boat and helicopter. The huge tour was Udall’s idea, which probably explains why National Geographic was invited on the trip. Udall’s efforts paid off with Utah Democratic Senator Frank Moss proposing Canyonlands National Park (learn more here). The bill was signed on September 12, 1964. What an amazing trip that must have been.

The National Geographic published the story in the May 1962 issue under the title, Cities of Stone in Utah’s Canyonland. The magazine only published one jeep photo, but they did include a map with tiny jeeps showing the route taken.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $8500.

(07/18/2015) Looks like a solid jeep with some useful updates.

“1953 Willys CJ3B. Lots to list but I’ll hit the highlights. There is a complete parts list to go with the jeep. Has a Ford 289 V8 from late 60s Mustang. Ford 3 speed transmission, dana 18 transfer-case to 5:38 gears in back and up front. Motor does NOT burn oil, sounds good, and runs strong. Has power steering, hydraulic clutch, upgrade master cylinder on firewall, hanging pedals on inside. Has 2 gas tanks… one under driver as normal, and one under rear floor with filler out the back. Lifted 3 inches. Please see pictures. Great jeep and fun to cruise town in, but will crawl anywhere you want to go. Well taken care of.
E-mail is best, I will be in and out of town, but will get back to you ASAP if you e-mail.”

1956 Wagon Spokane Valley, WA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Willys Wagons • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $3800

Runs and drives, but could use some work.

“56 Willys 4×4 Station Wagon, collector’s plates no yearly tabs to buy. New fuel pump, rebuilt carb, new rear brakes including wheel brake cylinders, grease seals and guard. Last owner told me motor was rebuilt and it appears to be rebuilt as compression checks out and is uniform between all 6 cylinders. Has Willys Super Hurrican straight 6. Motor runs quite. Bought for fun and bug out, while working on it to get it on the road I realized my disability makes it to difficult and is to hard on me, so hopefully you will benefit from my misfortune. You can drive it on property to see it does drive, but this old girl does need restoration.”

“I am selling my classic 1948 Willy’s Jeep. This is a fun little car, but I should sell it to make ends meet for my last year of school. Here is a little info on the Jeep:

-It has a 1971 Ford 302 engine from a mustang in it (V8)
-Has a working transfer case to go between 4×2 and 4×4
-Has a clean Colorado Title (Vintage car registration so you don’t have to pass emissions)
-It presently does not run, it seems to be an electrical drain. Might need a jump start, cables got stolen though.
-Battery is 1 year old Continue reading
