UPDATE: This updated post from 2012 now includes photos taken by David Carr at LA County’s Cabrillo Beach. The three photos below are on a wall as part of a “wall-of-fame”.
===============================
From June 28, 2012: Over the past 100 years Los Angeles County has used a variety of vehicles to manage their beaches. As part of a retrospective, the article below shows a few of them, along with welcoming some new hybrids into the County system. All photos belong to LA County’s Life Guard Association.
Here are two GPWs (the pics were from a now defunct blog):
Bathing beauties were still posing on county lifeguard trucks in 1959.
Buz unearthed this CJ-2A Life Guard Jeep used by the city of Los Angeles (vs. the county). Though the caption accompanying the jeep suggests this was war surplus, it’s clear this is a civilian rig. The rear extension is interesting, though doesn’t look neatly done.
Listed as a 1949 CJ-2A Swiss Army Jeep and claimed to be “an original Swiss Army Willys Jeep”, this looks to me to be a refurbed CJ-3A with a reproduction MB body and, possibly, an MB engine. So, how ‘original’ it is isn’t clear.
It is true the Swiss Army used a wide range of jeeps, including MBs, CJ-2As, CJ-3As, M-38A1s, CJ-3Bs, CJ-5s, and Wagons (https://cj3b.info/Military/SwissArmy.html).

“LOOKING FOR TRADES: currently looking at the market on trading my jeep. It is a 1948 CJ2A with 3 speed transmission with Saturn overdrive. In the recent years (and how I acquired it) it had a heart transplant from a 1966 Ford Mustang. It is a 289 Ford small block V8. It runs and drives! She’s a head turner for sure! Has a new fuel pump, and I have an OEM data plate, shocks for all 4 wheels as well as a transmission and transfer case gasket kit on the way from Kaiser Willys. Looking to trade for a VW bug, or anything older VW running and driving like mine. NOT LOOKING TO SELL”
