SS-Obersturmbannführer Skorzeny & the Jeep

• CATEGORIES: Features This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Bill shared this article about SS-Obersturmbannführer Otto Skorzeny and his failed attempt to use captured jeeps against the allies (though the second part fo the article about the jeep name is less informed based on the research I’ve posted). There are also some neat stories in the comments, including this one:

The Hollywood actor David Niven was assigned to Montgomery’s HQ as a frontline liaison officer. Thanks to Bradley basing his 12th Army Group HQ too far on the south end of his operational sector Ike decided to reassign Bradly’s two northernmost armies, the First and the Ninth, to Monty’s 21 AG. Monty sent Captain Niven on a fast jeep drive intended to meet with each divisional and regimental HQ of those two armies with, information, codewords, radio frequencies, etc — stuff they needed to quickly integrate with their new AG assignment. Not being a hardcore baseball fan he had trouble getting through one roadblock until he mentioned his date with Betty Grable. The GIs let him pass with advice to “bone up on baseball, Dave!” Niven’s driver was Sgt. Peter Ustinov.”

Here is David Niven in a jeep years after the war for the movie “Before Winter comes”:

Braedenton, FL Jeep Parts, Signs, Etc for Sale $1.25M

• CATEGORIES: Features, Parts This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Jim forwarded a FB post showing that the folks that bought the Bradenton, FL, jeep parts store has listed the contents at a price of $1.25M. (we previously discussed the sale of the store contents here)

There are some wondering vintage toys and signs and parts, but I expect that price will drop. The expense to identify, inventory, pack, ship, unpack, post online, and ready the parts for shipping is a massive and expensive undertaking I would imagine, which drops the value. That said, I sure would like a few of those toys and signs though!

Roger’s Newest Toy Find

• CATEGORIES: Artists/Drawings, Features, Models This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Roger Martin bought this cool, Marine-made jeep.

He wrote, “I bought another Jeep. It was built by marine in August of 1948. He was a machinist on a ship during the war. The wheels are made out of solid brass. The toy is pretty heavy. I bought it from a guy yesterday who bought it in 1970 from the widow of the original owner that built it. The Marine that built it worked for Fisher body in Cincinnati, Ohio.”

“This 1952 Willys M38A1 MD has been refinished in blue bedliner material and is powered by a Ford 302ci V8 linked to a T18 four-speed manual transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a Warn overdrive unit. The interior is equipped with bucket seats trimmed in black, and equipment includes a roll cage with a roof covering, 15″ wheels, two spares, a front tow bar, a winch, dual 15-gallon fuel tanks, and a jerrycan. An included Dunbar Kapple M-100 trailer has been modified with a rear tailgate and finished to match the truck, and a Smittybilt pop-up tent is mounted on top of the trailer. Approximately 5k miles are said to have been added since completion of the refurbishment approximately three years ago, and the current owner acquired the truck and trailer in 2014 and 2015, respectively. This modified Willys and Dunbar trailer are now offered at no reserve on dealer consignment, and both vehicles have their own California titles.”

1943-gpw-gigharbor-wa7 1943-gpw-gigharbor-wa8 1943-gpw-gigharbor-wa9

“For sale is a complete and running Government Issue Survivor 1943 Ford GPW flat fender Jeep (same as Willys MB but manufactured by Ford to keep up with demand during the war… if you are reading this you probably already know that). Still has the original flathead four-cylinder engine and original running gear. Has new Coker / Firestone military NDT tires. Has military canvas and soft top bows. Only thing missing is the emergency brake assembly. Lots of newer odds and ends like steering box rebuild, fuel pump, drivelines rebuilt and fresh seat cushions and military OD green canvas upholstery. This particular unit was a Navy Jeep during its service lift as evidenced by the two holes above the glove box for the USN id tags. Cash or cashiers check only. Do not even think about low balling I do not need to sell it that bad.
