Half Year Gone Already!

• CATEGORIES: News This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

That was a quick first half of 2022! It seems like it was just January…. Just this update today, as I will be busy installing some final trim on the guest house so the trim can be painted (see the bottom pics).

Our highlight from the Fourth was a short visit by Cowboy and Donna on their way from Illinois to the ocean. Cowboy accompanied Russ on our 2017 trip to Alaska and we’ve remained good friends since (as all the trip participants have). Somehow, I got no pics of the four of us!

However, to help them spot our place, I drove Patterson to the front of the property: It made for a couple good pics.
2022-07-04-fourth-patterson1 2022-07-04-fourth-patterson2

Our lowlight from the Fourth was watching the dry hills a few miles to the south of us catch fire from idiots shooting illegal fireworks over the dry Horse Heaven Hills. I’d estimate the fire line was roughly 2 miles long. This morning, this section of the hills is black; thankfully, the fire(s) are extinguished.

On another note, I was surprised on the 3rd to see this CJ-3B sitting in our neighbor’s field across the road. This is the first time I’ve seen the 3B at their place. They were shooting at something, presumably marmots. I’ll find out more about the jeep when I next see them:

Finally, Ann decided it was time to paint the guest house, so I’ve been enlisted to finish up the exterior window trim (for some reason this was never completed). Here’s a before look at the rather bland colors:

Here, the red color is mostly completed, giving it much more of a “barn” feel. The dark blue will be replaced with white.

Updates on the Racer

• CATEGORIES: Bantam-FordGP-WillysMA-EarlyJPs This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

I hope everyone enjoys their Fourth of July! We are spending it at home as we work on various projects. I’ve mostly been focusing on jeeps, while Ann has taken on painting the guest house a barn-red color.

I spent some time a couple days ago work on the racer’s frame (removing and grinding). Along the way I discovered a few interesting tidbits.

Here’s where I started, with the gas tank, battery, and cowl in place. Because I want to gain a few more inches for the cockpit, I want to move the gas tank and battery back farther, which means redoing the mounts for both.

Before removal:

After .. you can more easily see the custom crossmember that was added when the frame was widened. Not the prettiest installation work.

2022-06-30-frame-work-racer01

While looking at the rear of the frame, I noticed that the frame seems to widened further in back. It turns out the rear of the frame rails is about 1.5″ wider than the mid section and front section of the frame. I don’t believe that was intentional. Here are a couple pics looking down both frames rails. It’s easy to see the frame’s bows. However, I don’t want to redo the entire frame at this point; I’m more interested in functionality.

It’s hard not to want to toss the frame and do a full rebuild, but I don’t want to make that investment of time and money until I’m sure I still enjoy racing. It just has to be safe, comfy, and dependable. Looks can come later.

1971 Jeepster SC-1 Sport Commando Walla Walla, WA **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: Jeepster This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $19,995.

Ken shared this rare Jeepster SC-1 Sport Commando. This one has had some mods. You can learn more about them in the Motor Trend article: https://www.motortrend.com/features/1710-1971-jeepster-sc-1-hurst-commando/

“This 1971 Jeepster Commando SCI and the 1971 Jeepster Hurst Edition were built for only a couple of months or so making them the rarest Jeeps ever built. Only around 300 of each were ever built and around 125 Hurst Editions are known to exist and less SC1’s are known to survive making it the rarest Jeep known.

I bought it pretty much as is a few years ago adding the wheels and tires. Everything mechanical was rebuilt like the V6 engine and upgraded in horsepower with 4bbl carb, turbo 400 tranny both rear end and front end. Power Steering and Power brakes were added and an aftermarket stereo replaces the original radio and unfortunately small refinements were made to the dash to get an earlier edition radio to fit.

1963 CJ-5 Prague, OK $4800

• CATEGORIES: CJ5 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Nice wheels/tires. I’m pretty sure the faux battery box lid was phased out after the 1963 year, which suggest this might be a 1962 or earlier. Has a Meyer hardtop, with a handy-looking luggage rack, and a Ramsey PTO winch.

1964 CJ-3B Mesquite, TX $15,000 OBO

Needs some tuning at the very least.

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/441564257438209

1964-cj3b-mesquite-tx

“1964 Jeep CJ3b, the last year for the flat fender jeep. Runs and drives, but needs a little TLC. Frame off restoration done by Gateway Classic cars in late 2014. Dauntless V6 with a 3 speed manual trans. 4×4. My grandparents purchased it at auction and took delivery in December of 2014. It sat outside for a couple of years, and as a result, the top has mold on the inside. No rips or tears, but I have had the top off ever since I bought it from my grandparents because it feels bigger and cleaner without it.

Been inside my garage since I bought it. Needs a little carb work, nothing major. Runs and drives, but it does need to warm up quite a bit to get it to idle well. New tires January 2021. (Brand new spare in back.) New battery January 2021. New Brakes February 2021. New Radiator February 2021. And a few more repairs since then. Paint is in great shape, but does have a few blemishes. Incredibly clean, rust free. OBO or trade. Let’s make a deal.”

1946 CJ-2A Nevada, TX $8750

• CATEGORIES: CJ-2A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

Has some mods and a Ford Pinto engine, though I don’t believe the company ever made a 2.4L for the Pinto. Interesting enough, there were multiple distinct versions of the 1.6L and 2.0L (this info on Pinto engines was an interesting read).

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/509914190911024/

“The body is in nice shape for a 76 year old vehicle. The engine has been replaced with a 2.4L from a Ford Pinto. It has a Warn overdrive on it. The carb needs some work but it does start. 2 sets of tires and both need replaced. Has soft doors and top that are in fair condition. Has title. Trades considered for vintage cars as long as they have 2 doors.”
