Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Starts with coaxing. Some partitions welded into the cargo area.
“1948 Willys CJ2A? Pretty cool old jeep, worth fixing for sure. Looks like it’s all there, I did get the motor to “run” off starter fluid. Frame is good, body is rough but better than most, definatly useable. Motor was rebuilt at some point, looks to have the original drivetrain ( flathead 4, 3 speed manual, spicer 18)”

The tires are bad.
“Came across this set of 4 wheels bought them for my jeep. But have decided to go with a different type of wheel. They are 16″ which are more on the rare side, typically you find these as 15″ They looked to be in decent shape. Still have a good coat of paint on them, Actually looks to have a couple maybe more coats of paint in which helped to preserve them. The tires on them have dry rot. If you are not picking these up. I will remove the tires for shipping purposes. I have it marked at local pickup only, however I will ship. Just give me your address for a quote.”

It runs and drives, but body is patched and camo’d.

“I have some early model jeep wheels and tires 700/16 for sale for $450.00 for a set of four. These are five hole/5” on 51/2” pattern. These are correct for the M38 and M38A1 military type jeep vehicles”

“1953 Jeep CJ3B High Hood. All new on a nice body and frame. Rebuilt motor and trans, new springs, shackles, brakes, brake lines and park brake cables. New fuel tank and lines, wiring, windshield and all rubber seals. All new steering. Runs down the road at 55. New seats and top. If interested, please call Gil at 360-967-2273.”

This photo was at a Pacific History site, though it isn’t clear to me whose site this actually is. The picture was part of a Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspaper and likely was taken in 1946. According to the caption, “Seems someone wrote in and complained that the newspaper photographer’s Jeep looked “like it belonged in a circus,” so when the circus actually came to town, the photographer obliged. Note the chrome wheels, bumper and grill on this surplus GPW, and the fabric-wrapped steering wheel. I’d be willing to bet the body isn’t olive-drab any more. Suggestions? I’m guessing bright blue.”

On January 7, 1953, Ringling Circus clown Paul Jerome posed for photographer Joseph Janny Steinmetz. The reason for shooting a clown in a jeep on the beach is unknown; however, Steinmetz lived in Sarasota, FL, so maybe the location was convenient. Both photos are from the State Archives of Florida.
Note the jeep has both bowholders and possibly a spare tire carrier on the driver’s side.

A couple days ago I was adding the WPC Museum to my list of places to visit on our upcoming trip to the East Coast next May/June (official announcement in January). But, then I learned the museum was closing at the end of this year.
However, John forwarded this link indicating the museum has been sold to the Chrysler Group LLC. So, the 67 vehicles won’t be split up just yet. Unfortunately, the exhibits will only be open on special occasions. And, despite how ‘special’ my wife thinks I am, I don’t think I’m special enough that they’ll open that for me.
For the jeep lover who has jackets . .. only four coatracks left!
