Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. UPDATE: Price has dropped to $2500 which I think is a great price for this jeep.
It looks to be in pretty good shape. There were only 2,182 CJ-2As built in 1949, so this might be a rare CJ-2A.
“1949 Jeep Willy CJ2A, RUNS WELL, flat head 4cyl, 3spd, Hi/Lo range, 4×4 with locking hubs,front tow bar, new top, tires are in nice shape, has been switch to a 12volt system, unsure on the gear ratio. been stored for two years – somewhat negotiable on price. Call 360-518-1567”

Lots of upgrades on this CJ-2A. The ‘bad’ items don’t sound all that bad.
“1948 willy cj2a, 302 V-8, three speed, twin stick transfer case, rear dana 44 locked, front dana 27 locked, extra front and rear axles complete, new red paint, new front seats, brand new painless wiring, 33×11.50 super swampers, ready to go. The Bad: Needs new gauges soon and a new front right shock. $4000 O.B.O. Call Berry 253-861-1161 for questions ”
It’s 1:53pm my time and the auction for this CJ-2A ends in about 4 hours. The price has climbed to $14,600, pushed high by two bidders, though this high price seems a bit fishy to me.
“This particular CJ is finished in Harvard Red, which was a 1946 only color and was replaced for 1947. The Body, Serial, and Frame numbers all match and this was the 73,437 CJ2A produced and was built late in the ’46 model run which ended at S/N 83379. This Jeep is said to lived its whole life in Arizona and Colorado and is believed to have only 56,166 original miles on the body.”

It appears that a good amount of core work has been finished.
“1946 Willys CJ-2A. Rebuilt F-head engine, trans., and transfer case. New springs, brakes, shocks, carburetor and gas tank. Rebuilt 12V alternator, water pump and radiator. Chassis is complete except for steering, pedals and master cylinder. Engine is all hooked up and you can hear it run. Body needs new front section floors. Body is sitting on rolling chassis for transport. No title, bill of sale only. $1,500 obo. Please contact for additional info or photos.”

I can’t tell if the paint on this is unusual or has been altered as part of the photo compression process.

This appears to be a very nice rig and I think it’s a very good value given it’s got a stainless steel chrome windshield. I’m pretty sure the seller means sm420 tranny. Interestingly, the very top pic on the bulletin board shows an external fan attached to the outside of the grille. I don’t know if that’s a new feature or an old one, but it would suggest there might be cooling problems.

I’m pretty sure this is parts jeep given the poor condition of the body.
“Old ranch jeep. Bought a year ago and never touched it. Rust in some areas, worst near the side steps by the driver and passenger seats. Other areas not so much rust. Glass in windshield intact. New fuel tank. Does not run and no title. All major components seem to be there. With a little work should run. Email for photos or questions. Thx – Ben”
While updating the ebay results page, I ran across the following jeep. It’s a CJ-2A made up to look like a MB/GPW. On ebay, it sold for a winning bid of $10,600. I’m a bit shocked it sold for that much.
“1948 WILLYS CJ2A JEEP, SN/CJ2A 181994, refurbished to look like a WWII MB military jeep (don’t get me wrong, it is NOT a WWII military jeep) only made to look like one. It would be great for parades or WWII re-enactments. It does have a working military style fender blackout light, military style grill blackout marker lights, MB style spare tire rack, WWII style fuel can with holder, bumperettes, MB style side and corner handles, WWII style tandem hand wipers, military style foot starter, new front OD canvas seats with WWII style seat back pockets, stars, USA lettering and 5 new 6 ply WWII style NDT tires (non-directional tread, pulls just as good in reverse as in forward)….”
This might be one of my favorite all-time body pictures. Can you imagine what it took to damage the cowl and dashboard? The seller suggests you might need to get the body replaced, but I’m thinking the body is the best part.
“Serial number 109850. This jeep was built around 1947. willys built around 240,000 of these jeep from 1945 until 1949. the serial number of this jeep (109850) shows that it was built around 1947 according to production figures from the willys jeep homepage on the net. The jeep is complete, it runs very well and drives well also. the jeeps body is very rusty , with lots of damage. i would say that the body would need to be replaced;however, the engine, transmission, drivetrain is in good , operating condition. this jeep is in original conditon with all oringinal componets.”

An eWillys reader somehow found this in the ‘other makes’ section of ebay Motors. It made me laugh, so I have posted this for your Sunday amusement. Even though the starting bid is only $99, there are no bids.
“… The complete, unaltered 4WD drivetrain from that 1947 Willys Jeep: engine, tranny, transfer case, front & rear drive, suspension, steering, cooling system, etc. was installed on a homemade (C channel) frame. Most of the body, tilt bed & plow were also homemade. I must say, while “strange”, (owner is a carpenter), everthing is “well built”….. “
