UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1500

(03/24/2011) Here is a project that appears pretty solid. Is the windshield missing arms? How is it staying vertical?  The seller does a nice job of explaining the situation.

“Up for sale is a Willys CJ3A (mostly). The engine numbers put it at a 1949 CJ3A. I picked this up with great intentions, but my CJ2A has been taking all of my time and it is now time for someone else to make use of this. Some good modifications were done and some good body work – it will however require re-wiring (pretty simple on these) and some TLC. I got it running with a battery and putting gas in the carb before I brought it home and have done absolutely nothing with it since that day. This would make a great start to a rock crawler or just a cool toy to run around town in.

Engine: L134 (period correct at least, but I believe it is original) I had it running a couple of years ago and it idled smooth and ran strong.

Transmission: Unknown – haven’t driven it but it shifts through all gears.

Transfer case: Unknown – see above

Body: Good condition (actually great for the year) little to no rust that I’ve seen. Hat channels were replaced with angle iron (well done) and the body was skimmed with bondo – which is cracking in several places.

Other: Spring over axle conversion was done for lift. May need to re-evaluate the angels that were used.

Being sold as a project only as is – where is. Will need a trailer to haul. $1400 OBO”

UPDATE: **SOLD** WAs $3500.

This looks pretty nice for the price.

“Jeep 1949 Willys with canvas seats and top. Was restored in 1996 and has a 4 cylinder Buick in the place of the L head Jeep engine it was born with. When this was king speed limit was 45 on all Florida roads. It was made for 45 and below and is lots of fun there. Has towbar and can pull trailers easily. In low range you can idle through about anything. This is a dirt road, forest road loving vehicle and has WARN hubs. Everything works fine but needs the brakes adjusted by hand if you enjoy stopping.”

1953 CJ-3A Highlands Ranch, CO **SOLD**

UPDATE: Was $2000. **SOLD**

Kudos to the seller for the detailed description.

“This Jeep is titled as a 1953, but is also noted on the title that it is “assembled by owner”. It was assembled in approximately 1964. This was a perfectly serviceable vehicle about 20 years or so ago, but was abandoned. It was garaged until about 2003, but has been sitting outside since then. A new fuel pump and a new water pump were installed a few years ago, but since the fuel pump didn’t work immediately, it was abandoned. The installer of the pump now admits that he probably got the lever on the wrong side of the cam, so I reinstalled the pump and it’s now correct. I haven’t started the engine, because the tank is bone dry, but it cranks and fires if you pour gas into the carburetor. The vehicle has a Buick V6 engine, which has less than 1000 miles on a short block. Since it’s been sitting, I have no idea of how the inside of the engine looks. The axles are not CJ2A, since it has 11-inch drum brakes, which don’t appear to be the Mercury conversion, so are probably from a later CJ, perhaps a 1969 CJ5. There are dual shock absorbers in the front, with coil-overs on one set. The windshield is a CJ3A. The steering is the Hudson conversion that was so popular, and includes a ball bearing bell-crank. The Jeep has a Bestop soft top that is in pretty good shape. It was not installed on the vehicle when it was sitting outside. The top still hasn’t been installed. It’s pretty much just sitting there, but it seems to fit fine, and includes the doors. The transmission and transfer case were new or nearly new in 1964. The transmission doesn’t shift into second and third, so I took the top off, and found some rust from moisture condensation. It would probably free up by being driven a short distance, and then the fluid could be changed. The transfer case shifts OK, but I haven’t looked inside. There are wide rims, but they are steel, which is pretty tame by today’s standards. The vehicle has two 10-gallon gas tanks, one under each seat, with plumbing to switch back and forth, and there is an electric fuel pump in series with the pump on the engine. There is a back seat that matches the front seats, and there is a full roll cage! There is a box of spare parts, and a couple of mufflers that could be installed in place of the headers to straight pipes that it currently has. This Jeep would be fine for someone who has the time to work with it. There is probably not a lot that needs to be done to get it on the road in minimum form, but it needs a lot of work to make it a daily driver. This Jeep is sold as-is, and I can’t provide an emission test, since it doesn’t run. It does have a title, but hasn’t been registered for a long time.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $550.

The gas tank looks like it has the bigger filler hole like a M-38, but the opening looks to be CJ-3A.

“1950 CJ3A Willy’s Jeep with artic top. Great project jeep solid metal. Will need to be towed. Needs new battery and tires. Mechanic said it would take about an hour or so to get it running. It has been sitting for about 6 months. Clean title. Email if you want to come take a look.
The military commissioned a cold weather top, or “closure,” for use on the new M-38 Jeep Jeep which went into production in 1950. The cold weather closure, nicknamed the “arctic top,” saw action during the Korean war, and has a reputation as being the best-built aluminium top manufactured for either military or civilian Jeeps.”

UPDATE:  A reader bought this.  More pics forthcoming.

This has some nice pix of the rear bed extender.  The F-head has been nicely tucked under the hood as well.

“This is a 1950 Willys CJ3a that I have just purchased out of Texas. Due to an emergancy I must sell this and my 1947 CJ2a. I bought this from the family of the original owner who purchased it new. He added the Warn Overdrive so he could drive hightway speeds. He also added the rare Willys Bed Extension so he could sleep in the back. The jeep is in great overall condition. Has a little rust bubbling behind the A pillar. The floors are solid no rust other than surface rust. the tool box under the seat is solid also no rust. Seats in great shape very soft. has a few scrapes and dents but over all great shape. At some point in its life an F134 engine was added. It has a Corvette side draft carburator (carter YF). It starts easily and runs great but smoke. May be stuck rings from sitting or just tired. I will include a good running F134 engine out of a M38a1 that I took out of a M170 jeep. It comes with a another T-90 transmission and transfercase. This engine has been converted to 12 volts. I will include the distriburtor, New High torque mini starter, new one wire alternator. The current engine is still 6 volts and has a new battery. Has the original keyed ignition coil system and step starter. I have the 2 doors and all the top mounting bows and brackets but no top. Garage stored. Has old school front lock outs. I have the both front fog lights but one is broke”

1954? CJ-3A? Midlothian, Tx **SOLD**

• CATEGORIES: CJ-3A This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $1100.

This looks like a good price.  Curiously, this has tool indents.  I think that might be a MB/GPW body.  Something about the fuel inlet hole doesn’t look quite right to me (I think it is custom) and I don’t see any body drain holes.

“Willys Jeep for sale. Good project jeep. Wanted to start it but dont have time right now. The engine was running a few months ago. Turns over now, but needs new fuel injector. Has to warm up to stay running. It has a tow bar so you can tow it home if you like. Serious only. I have original title to this jeep. It sat in a barn for 40 yrs and was only used around farm for that time. Email for details.”

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2250.

It runs and drives, but needs work.

“1952 Jeep/Willys CJ-3A project for sale. Recent changes in employment are pushing me to sell the latest project, so the price is negotiable within reason.

The Jeep starts with a little coaxing and drives, but it is project and a work in progress. Carburetor rebuilt and re-jetted.

Email with questions, for more pictures, or just come down and buy it and make your grandfather proud.”
