Pepperdine University’s Digital Archives includes a photo of Academy Award Winning Art Director Water Tyler in a DJ-3A Gala jeep. He was involved in a variety of movies from the 1940s through the 1970s. In this case he was working on the Elvis Presley movie “Fun in Acapulco“.

Here’s the trailer for the movie, which includes a brief photo of a DJ-3A:

The Internet Movie Car Database also includes a photo from the movie that shows both a Gala and the DJ-3A-mobile cocktail bar:

Was this movie the one that inspire Elvis to get himself a DJ-3A Surrey? Nope, according to the 3B page, he bought his famous Tropical Rose/Coral Mist 1960 DJ-3A from Sharp Motors in Memphis, prior to filming both “Fun in Acapulco” and “Blue Hawaii”.

• CATEGORIES: Advertising & Brochures, DJ-3A, Features, Old News Articles, Postcards • TAGS: , This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE:  The two post cards at the bottom of this post were on eBay several years ago. I recently came across some newspaper clippings that give background about the Winter Park Villager tram’s purpose. The service began November 28, 1966, but I could not find an end-date.

This first article discusses the jeep tram’s beginnings:

This next article notes that Monday, November 28th, as the launch date for the jeep tram service.

DJ-3A Tops Bows and Clips Black Canyon City, AZ

• CATEGORIES: DJ-3A, Parts • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE: Still Available.

https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/pts/d/black-canyon-city-jeep-dispatch-dj3a/7278137833.html

The top bows are $700 a set. A price for the top clips were not included. Both the both bows and the clips are for the DJ-3A convertible model (solid back and CJ-3B-like windshield with twist-knobs across the top). The seller only has a few sets made. He notes that he isn’t making any money on them and has been more than willing to share information on the insights he gains trying to make his top.

The soft top is something custom the seller had made by an upholsterer. It took him some work to redesign and properly fit the top so that it would fold up and connect to the windshield properly, yet also fold down and attach to the body.

Here is pic of the reproduction bows vs. the original black bows:
