Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. It looks like it has surface rust, but nothing indicates rust that’s too terrible.

This might be the same one that was for auction on eBay.
“This 1963 DJ-3 has been restored to better than new condition and is beyond perfect in every respect. It is powered by Jeeps rugged little 134 cubic inch inline four-cylinder engine with three-speed manual transmission. More importantly it is festively finished in Flaming Pink and White with a Pink and White striped surrey top and spare tire cover. It is cheeky cute cheerful and fabulously restored.”

“Willy’s jeep, body straight, 3 speed manual tranny, no motor, 4 wheel drive, new tires, roll cage, lock out hubs, clear title, tow bar, all instruments work, $1200 obo.”

This might have some possibilities.
“DJ 3A delivery jeep. Was originally 2 wheel drive but converted to 4×4. Have original running gear. Runs but needs seats. Body in very good condition. $1,200.00 O.B.O.”
It looks pretty stock, has no engine and sports a column shift.
“Im cleaning out the barns for the spring, here is a 1956 Willys DJ-3A. Has the column shift, with factory hard top, and sliding doors. No Engine, has transmission, and all correct column shift parts. Body is in decent shape with some surface rust, and a little on the floors. Call Brandon at 412-818-9570 or email me….lets talk. Engine that is in pics does not come with, it is an incorrect engine.”
Note the large round speedometer. This is likely a DJ-3A body with a tailgate. This is rare enough to be worth a closer look.

There are a TON of great pictures of this Surrey. I don’t think I’ve seen this Surrey listed previously, but I might have missed it; it looks like no expense was spared in it’s restoration.
“Purchaced by Wayne Davis because his wife liked the way it looked, this Gala-Surrey was purchaced at a small Jeep dealer in Cleveland, Texas, a full restoration began with an unlimited budget. The car was brought back to its original color scheme of pink and white as no detail was overlooked. The end result revealed a car ready for any show. “This Jeep has been 95% restored. All the mechanics was done by Edgewater Jeep and the paint was done by Sunshine Custom Paint. All the chrome was done by Collins Custom Plating (including the pot medal) and there is a lot of chrome including engine parts. This is a great Jeep to have. It is 2WD (not 4WD) drive. The Jeep has “3 on-the-tree”, left hand seating. This is NOT a postal Jeep. It has the “I” beam front axle, which is the old school Jeep”

I include this jeep as it’s a rare example, in my opinion, of a DJ-3A with a tailgate. I’ve heard these existed, but hadn’t had picture proof until I saw this one. The thing that clued me in was the large speedometer. Once I saw that, I went back and read the description.
“For Sale is my 1955-1964 DJ3A/CJ2A/CJ3A combo Jeep that I use on my Farm for general weekly transportation over the last several years. Jeep is stored inside my barn at all times on my farm. If you are looking for a show vehicle with matching numbers this is not the ride for you. However, if you are looking for a good solid original Willys flat fender Jeep driver for general use, read on. All body parts except the tool box are original Willys manufacture. Body tub, fenders, hood, tailgate, and front grill are original DJ3A that have had a paint job using Mil Standard Sherwin Williams OD CARC paint. Body tub is solid as the DJ3A had a full hard top which protected it from the normal weather related rust experienced by most soft top Willys vehicles…..”
UPDATE: This DJ-3A is back for round 2 of eBay. An opening bid of $2250 has been made. Reserve has not been met.
This is a nice looking DJ-3A. I’m a little surprised that at an opening bid of $2500 there are no bids.
