“Title says 43 but its a M38 made on a couple of years in early 50’s. Flat fender. Needs some body work mainly on the interior back. L head engine. I do have the correct grille but not the right windshield. Have for $400 a M38 top with data plates, and for $1300 a 52 M38 with a 302 that runs in it. No brakes and needs lots of body welding.”

“1953 Jeep CJ-3A (AKA M38A1, FJ, CJ, Willys depending on the application)
VIN MC11719

This jeep has been in our family since the early 80’s. My Dad then allowed some of his workers to use it for side jobs, etc. and it was used as a work jeep. It underwent an amateur restoration (there is some bondo in places) by one of his workers in order to provide give him some work.

It starts and runs fine, it leaks oil, and the brakes are fine.  They were actually re-shoed by a local San Antonio Company (took forever to get those right) tires are good, etc.   The oil leakage is minor. The windshield has cracks from being dropped when lowered during a quail hunt by an over anxious teenager.
The physical attributes are that it has a 4 cylinder flathead motor – original, Warner 3 speed manual transmission with Transfer case.  2 wheel drive-High, 4 wheel drive-High, 4 wheel drive-Low.  It all works as designed.  This is a driver, top speed about 40 – 45mph.  Should you not want to drive to your off-road destination, there is a town bar that will allow you pull the jeep at 70 mph very comfortably.  At one time we had it wired so you would connect the lights to the pigtail of your pickup.  The wiring is still there, but not connected.  The electrical system was converted from 24 volt to 12 volt prior to ownership.

We got creative, thought high back seats would look cool, so we replaced the bench pickup seat where eye level was just at the top of the window frame with VW high back seats.  The under seat tank was shot and we used a stainless steel square tank up until about 1 year ago directly behind the two high back seats.  We added a back seat to the back to carry extra passengers and used a 6 gallon red tank that is under the back seat.  The seat for the passengers in the back is from a school bus.”

• CATEGORIES: Features, M-38 • TAGS: This site contains affiliate links for which I may be compensated.

UPDATE 2: Bill says Mike needs your vote.  Click on this link and then click the “VOTE FOR THIS FINALIST” (You will have to fill out a short form).

UPDATE: I ran this post a couple years ago.   Mike is now entering an international electric vehicle contest and needs your support.  Head on over to the CJ-2A page to see how your vote can support him.  Thanks for the heads up on this Bill.

Here’s an M-38 that’s mostly original except for the electric modifications.   The owner, Mike Picard, plans on keeping it stock, but restoring it some more.  The drive motor is a Netgain Warp11 Permanent Magnet DC.  It’s got 18 NAPA GC8V, 8.00 Volt, Lead-Acid, Flooded Batteries. It is still in progress as of the date of this webpage.  View all the information here.

This picture was from December 2008.  Work is ongoing.

The charger, controller, fuses, etc are all here, under the driver’s seat where the gas tank used to be.  This provides good access and good ventilation along with protection from the weather.

1953 M-38 San Antonio, TX **SOLD**

UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $5500

” This jeep has been in the family since the early 80’s. My Dad then allowed some of his workers to use it for side jobs, etc. and it got in fairly rough shape. It underwent a very amateur redo (there is bondo in places) by one of his workers in order to give the guy some work.

It starts and runs fine, it does leak oil, brakes are fine (took forever to get those right) tires are good, etc. The oil leakage is somewhat minor, just needs some TLC and maybe a gasket kit. The windshield has cracks from being dropped when lowered.

Due to the creative use of the VW high back seats in the front, the gas tank is in back. Seat for passenger are from a bus. I have the title in hand; it is registered as an antique vehicle, but could just as easily be registered as a daily driver should you choose to. Missing little bits here and there, like turn signals on front. It has the original flat head four and drivetrain. Don’t let the little size fool you, I pulled a ton of jacked up big ole trucks out of the mud with it years back. These jeeps are quickly becoming unavailable due to rust, and people just scrapping them or not letting them go. This one is still in decent shape and mostly original.”

It doesn’t run.

“1951 M-38 Willys Jeep for sale with clear Kansas title. Body is in good shape. 24 volt system is intact. Has engine and transmission. Not sure if the engine is in “running” condition, but all parts are there. No hood or gas tank.

This is an excellent candidate for military restoration. Serious inquiries only. I can provide additional pictures on request.”
