The Jolly & Renault: Competitors to the DJ-3A Surrey
UPDATE: Glenn spotted this unusual competitor to the DJ-3A Surrey. The seller calls it a Jolly, though the magazine picture below suggests it is actually the Renault (thanks DC). The one shown below has been in the Newport Beach area for years and was once owned by the founder of Armor All. It is up for auction on eBay.

Included in the Auction is a picture of a Mechanix article that discusses the DJ-3A Surrey, the Jolly and a Renault Beach Wagon. I tried to find the original article, but couldn’t. However, I did the other Modern Mechanix articles about jeeps listed in the posts below this one. Great stuff!
Modern Mechanix Magazine Article about Kids and a Jeep
This article ran in the September 1949 issue of Mechanix. This might just qualify as the first Hi Hood!
Modern Mechanix Magazine Article on Jeeps
Mechanix ran this article and picture on the future of the jeep in December of 1944. I think I might have this picture somewhere else, but never new its origin.

1947 Truck Paris, Mi $850
Here is a strangely modified truck pointed out by James.
“This is a 1947 2wd willys truck that is a flatbed. The eng runs great and it drives good too. The truck has been customized to a rag top and behind the windshield to the back of the cab is all well made. This is something you must see to get a true picture. It has the 6cyl with the 3speed on the floor trans and all original axles, shafts and frame. I was told dodge made these for the military for a short time but don’t know a lot about it. The miles are low and there is no smoke or bad noises in the drive line. One windshield is cracked but the dash is in good condition and the steering is tight. There is functional exaust stacks on it as well. I have seats for it and a console but they are not in it as of yet. I just put a 54.00 electric fuel pump on it. It still needs the wood doors replaced but I have one for a pattern and the floors were just replaced and painted. The bed is in great shape. Feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them all.”
1949 CJ-3A Franklin, WI **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was on eBay.
“Here for your bidding is a 1949 Willys CJ3A. I have owned the Jeep about ten years or so and have not used it much so thats why it is for sale. It had been sitting in the barn for a couple of years so I had to do some work on it. the work was as follows; new clutch assy. new u joints in the front. Updated to twelve volts with the key start type starter, ( I do have the old one and the foot lever). It has a delco alternator on it It has new exhaust. The four wheel drive work as it should , there is a noise in the right front hub when engaged. The motor does smoke a little and the front end shimmys at about 35 miles an hour, pretty sure it is the bell crank bushing. The body has had some work done on it prior to me getting it, there is probably bondo in it somewhere. The floors look to have been fixed at one time and it was a nice job. the frame looks prefect as the jeep did come from down south in Tenn. This is not and military jeep I just painted that way. If you have any questions or need more pics please email me . thanks for looking and good luck bidding”
1942 GPW Fort Worth, TX **SOLD**
UPDATE: **SOLD** Was $2500.
Runs and drives.
“1942 GPW Jeep, like the willys Ford help build them back during the world wars. Any how this one is unquie its had a willys truck cab and bed mated to it and is powered by a chevy 283 V8. Jeep runs and starts fine, we have been using it on the farm/ranch for the last 5 years and it belong to a friend of are that has had it over 40 yrs and did all these mods to it about 35 yrs ago so this thing has been running for sometime being a hunting rig in Colorado and Texas. I have the title to the Jeep, its not street legal i have only driven it up to about 45 mph on a gravel road before but manily for off road and trail use only. Selling it manily for the reason my dad is getting older and having a hard time getting in and out of it so side by sides have replaced it. Everything works for the most part, it doesnt have very good brakes it will slow down and stop but not great, the seat needs to be recoved and the exhaust pipe has some holes in it from exhaust leaks but no biggie. all 6 kc lights work, 4×4 works, starts and runs fine carb was rebuilt 3 yrs ago, new starter and alternator, battery, hitches front and rear, 2k lb winch on the front.”
