Importantly, the allure of buying a project jeep can be romantic. The reality of restoring a jeep can be quite different, expensive and overwhelming without the right tools and resources. Steve tells me he spotted this M-38 on eWillys and decided to purchase it last July. On the right you can see the ‘before’ condition which is how Steve purchased it, but I think it pretty much tells the story. There was a bunch of metal welded onto the jeep in odd places and it was red, everywhere.
As you can see in the pics below, just taking off the metal and painting it green has done wonders for this old M-38.

(Sept 19, 2009) “Ford GPW, tub off restoration to motor pool specs. I’ve had this jeep for three years and have driven it very little. Date of delivery is Nov. 30, 1942. I have spent a lot of time and money on it but I’m getting too old and just don’t have that much time for it. I’m asking $18,000 OBO. I don’t know how to post pictures so if interested you can come by and see it, email me with questions, or call me and ask questions. It is in lusterless O.D. and Marine Corps markings. It has five combat rims and Ford marked military tires.”
UPDATE: I dropped by the seller’s house today to check this jeep out. Kim’s father is the actual seller and Kim is selling it for him. Both father and son rebuild wagon’s, with Kim specializing in Sheep Wagons (see pic to the right). I suspect the large Basque population in southern Idaho (5th largest community of Basques in the world) fosters this unusual hobby (at least I’ve never seen these anywhere else).
As for the jeep, it turns out to be a pretty stock M-38 that runs. It’s got some rough edges and needs some paint. It’s got the dual battery setup. It could use new seat covers and a new gas tank and a few other items. A professional mechanic has done some work on it and can provide more specific information.
I gotta say I like this jeep. There’s enough old school stuff to make me smile. Check out the battery, the roll cage, the art on the back, the dashboard, the gauges, the gas pedal … I could go on.
The owner of this jeep is 16 year old Trevor, who inherited it from his father. Trevor’s going to make some updates to this jeep, such as adding power steering. He asked for some advice regarding steering so naturally I asked for pictures.
Trevor wrote, “thanks so much for your time and advice! it really means a lot to me cause i wanna get this thing out on the trails like my dad did back in day.”
This has an unusual paint job.
“What we have here is a 1946 willys with a 305 engine in it .. it has dana 44 rear with 488 gears, detroit locker dana 27 488 in front. new suspension shocks and stabelizers. 305 has wiend stealth intake with new edelbrock 600, engine has a sig erson mild cam with headers. The trans and transfer case are Dana t 90 steering is Jeep 1946. Also it has 33×12.50 tires on it .. Its been painted white with purple a few years back so showing some wear but good hunting wagon or just good transportation .. Except for that bump in the hood, this looks like it was a good solid build. Non runner now.

FOR SALE: 1944 WIllys MB Runs and drives. GPW engine, T90 Transmission and Transfercase all work. Brakes are new. Lights work, Speedo, Amp gauge (12v) and Temp gauge work. Has 4 Combat rims and tires, also has sparetire and mount. Bumperettes, Pintle, Gas can and holder, Shovel and Axe and Canvas Summer top. Front seats with new canvas cushions. Body has minimal rust problems (hat channel areas). This Jeep is in “motorpool” condition, parade ready. Not 100 % correct but Close!. Needs detailing to make all original. “almost complete set of jeep willys parts. I believe all its missing is the radiator. 2 engines an original jeep willys flathead, and a jeep willys f134 hurricane engine. both need work. bought gauges from a junked out jeep willys to replace the ruined originals. jeep has the a frame tow bar. leather seats purchased from the same place as the gauges. i got the jeep from family and it doesn’t have a title. sat for nearly 20 years and needs extensive work. i need it out of my garage. “

This is a good running and driving jeep. Most of the military equipment is present and in good condition. 4 cylinder flat head 134 C.I. “Go Devel” engine with correct MC serial number. Borg/Warner T98 transmission & T18 transfer case. 24 volt electrical system, water proof ignition system, all blackout and convoy lights work, radium face’s on gauges, dataplates and body I.D. tag in great condition including plate for fording cable, fuel filler neck extension, engine lift bracket, master cylinder heat shield, fittings for fuel primer, vented for fording kit, headlight guards, mounts for rifle scabbord on windshield, original Scheller steering wheel (but it’s cracked), spare wheel mount, 5 correct rims, trailer receptical, footman loops and top bow stoage brackets, rear seat mounts, pioneer tool mounts, pintel hitch….”
